+ Excellent rear screen definition and more rapid/accurate focusing than earlier model (I previously had Canon 20D DSLR). Pictures quality higher (15 megapixel) and HDMI output provides excellent viewing on LCD TV. Shutter quieter than 20D and more rapid multiple shot sequences. Works well with a range of lenses.

+ I can't fault image quality, build quality or ease of use. The new 'my menu' feature allows you to put your favorite settings to hand. My 30D has me rummaging around in custom functions to turn on MLU for example, but now it is easy to reach. Live view, which I'll admit I initially though was a gimic has already saved me crawling around on the floor to get a low vantage point... I'll happily stand corrected on that point.

- Heavy. Though this is reassuring from a build quality point of view, like most DSLRs it can weigh you down after a few hours... I'd sacrifice the on-camera flash to save a few grams personally. These are universally awful in any case. The supplied strap is covered with logos (thats a bit of a personal bugbear) and not the most comfortable thing on the neck.

+ Not too different from earlier models - so easy to get to grips with.
Image pixel size - great for cropping.
New processor is very fast.
I like the concept of the function buttons - but there is a problem see below.
Greatly improved rear screen.

- The buttons below the rear screen are easily unintentionally operated - makes you wonder what has happened.
bit disappointed in the 'sensor cleaning' - not very effective.
Rear screen much improved though still difficult to see in bright light - hoped it would be better.

+ I upgraded from a Canon EOS 400D (which I loved) as I have become a lot more proficient with my photography skills. I got to the stage where there were limitations with what my 400D could do for me. I was torn between going for the 500D or this 50D. I wasn't bothered about the videoing capabilities of the 500D so opted for the 50D. I like the sturdy feel and can look forward to getting to grips with the many different features available.

- As I expected it is heavier and have therefore had to invest in a new sturdier bag to carry it and my equipment over a period of time. I expected this though and do not see it being a problem.

+ Upgraded from EOS20D and found some genuine improvements:
No dark corners as the camera recognize the lens and adjust the picture accordingly
High sensitivity setting that works pretty well
Auto ISO as an option in the manual modes
Informative preview screens with focus points showing

- Don't care for the "electronic viewfinder", people who want this should buy a simlple compact.

- Very Bad ..... the one can inadvertantly move the LEFT HAND DIAL changing your pre-set option from P to A to s Etc...... the Nikon press to change option is FAR BETTER.
Cannon should have an interlocking switch to hold the pre-set chosen option.
On far to many times I find that this Dial has moved, and now have to CHECK EVERY TIME that the SETTING has not been moved...................Very Poor showing here CANON

Features

* 15.1 MP (APS-C) CMOS sensor * 6.3 fps with up to 90 JPEG image burst * DIGIC 4 processor * ISO range up to 12800 * 3.0” VGA LCD with Live View * High precision wide area AF * Magnesium alloy body * EOS Integrated Cleaning System * EF/EF-S lens and EX Speedlite compatibility

Unleash the photographer within

15.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor
Canon’s APS-C sized CMOS sensor delivers ultra-detailed, low-noise images – ideal for large-scale reproduction and creative cropping. Redesigned pixels with gapless micro lenses extend light gathering capability for exceptional performance throughout the ISO range.

6.3 fps continuous shooting
Perfect for sports, wildlife and action sequences, the EOS 50D captures 6.3 frames per second for continuous bursts of up to 90 JPEGs with a UDMA card.

DIGIC 4
DIGIC 4 is the EOS 50D’s powerful processing engine, working with the CMOS sensor to deliver 14-bit image processing for smooth gradations and natural looking colours. Fast enough to power 6.3 fps continuous shooting, DIGIC 4 is also responsible for the EOS 50D’s near-instant startup time and quick image review following shooting.

ISO range
For fast shutter speed shooting in low light, the EOS 50D features base ISO speeds to 3200, expandable to an ultra-sensitive 12800.

Clear View LCD
The 3.0” 920,000 dot VGA LCD screen offers exceptional clarity, perfect for checking the focus and composition of your images. The large viewing angle coupled with Live View mode makes photography at awkward angles a breeze.

Live View mode
Live View mode allows users to accurately frame images when using the viewfinder is impractical. The dedicated Live View button displays real-time images on the LCD, offering three types of auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and new Face Detection Live AF, which focuses based on faces detected in the frame.

Wide-area AF with 9 cross type points
The high-precision AF system employs 9 cross type points for precise focusing on both horizontal and vertical planes. The central AF point offers sensitivity up to f/2.8. Points are spread out across the AF frame to better accommodate off-centre subjects.

Magnesium alloy body
Built for demanding daily use, the EOS 50D’s lightweight, durable magnesium alloy body incorporates environmental protection for performance you can rely on.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System
Canon’s EICS combines special component materials to reduce dust generation, a fluorine coating on the low-pass filter to repel dust, and a Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit to shake dust free at power up/power down.

Accessories
The EOS 50D is compatible with over 60 EF and EF-S lenses and all EX Series Speedlite flash units.
