I bought this camera for my elderly, non-technical parents for Christmas having seen a review that claimed it was one of the simplest cameras to use. I had to choose a camera that was very simple, inexpensive and would be of use to someone without a PC.
The good points are that you can just switch it on, zoom and press the button. Also excellent is the easy to use AV-out function that enables them to view the photos on their TV as they do not have a PC. Another benefit is that it is Pictbridge and my parents have a Pictbridge compatible printer so they can print out the occasional photo - this is lesson two for them, we have to learn just a little bit at a time. The camera writes to SD - a very convenient and now inexpensive industry standard format. My mum was reluctant to use it on Christmas Day but, by the afternoon, she was merrily snapping away and I just received a message from her on Boxing Day to say she was going to take some photos as it was such a sunny day today! Playback mode on the LCD and TV was easy and logical - as was frame deletion. In fact, we did not need to read any instructions at all, it was so obvious, the icons were obvious, i.e. zoom, flash etc. Some may say that the camera is unattractive but it is perfect for kids and elderly people as it is simplicity itself to hold and operate. Canon cameras have a good reputation and this is well founded with this camera - well thought out.
-
Both my parents are arthritic and removing the battery cover and also the flap to expose the AV-out and other ports proved very difficult for them. The camera has a rather cheap plastic feel about it. As is the case with most equipment these days, all the writing and icons on the camera are so small my parents could not see them properly. The ideal would be to make the whole camera bigger with bolder icons.

The camera is stylish and easy to use. It features a number of different modes for different scenery and settings. The screen is large and therefore easy to focus on what you are taking.
-
The camera isn't as slim linned as most other cameras, therefore it wouldn't fit in a pocket if you were just carrying it around.

Only problem I can see is that you cannot delete multiple pictures; it has to be done individually, which is very time consuming. Otherwise, really lovely product. Would be good if it came with a case too.

Great image quality, easy to use, well made and sturdy. Has good extras like face recognition.
This is a very good camera if you just want to point and shoot but it also has good features like Sun Set and Black and White if you want to play.
-
A little larger than some digital cameras and a bit heavier. Viewing screen is difficult to see in bright sunshine frankly if Canon added a view-finder to this camera it would be pretty near perfect.

Good value for money. Battery life is extremeley good with the use of re-chargeable Ni cad batteries. Camera is easy to use once you have understood and read the manual. There are a lot facilities.
-
Led screen virtually unusable in sunlight. Flash can only be turned off as an option. Turning the camera off re-sets to on.to Whilst it is easy to use, you need to read the manual well. There is no supplied manual (CD only). Bought this for my wife as a point and shoot. She went back to her "old" Fuji.

Expert reviews for Canon PowerShot A470
Camera Type

Compact
There are 2 main types of camera: The SLR and the Compact.
SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. SLR cameras use a prism to reflect the exact image as seen through the lens and so offers a more accurate viewfinder. SLR cameras have detachable lenses offering greater flexibility if you wish to take a variety of different photographs.
Compact cameras have a built in lens and an ‘above lens’ viewfinder which is less accurate but they are often cheaper, more sleekly designed and easier to carry anywhere with you to capture that moment perfectly without having to fiddle with complex settings or a bag full of lenses.

Not to be confused with optical zoom, digital zoom enlarges a portion of the image thus simulating optical zoom. In doing so, some image quality is lost.
Face Recognition

No
A function for automatically detecting peoples faces and correctly adjusting the focus and exposure to take the best photo
Image Stabilisation

No
If a photo is taken at a slow shutter speed, or at a long focal length, the effects of ‘hand shake’ will be amplified. Some cameras come with built-in image stabilisation which is designed to act against this to produce sharper images.
It’s great for low light shots without a tripod, like at a gig.

Memory card slots come in many formats:

Manual Focus

Almost all modern cameras have autofocus. Manual focus allows you to override the autofocus and set the distance yourself. This is especially useful if your camera is struggling to focus in a low-light or confusing scene.

Yes
Having a timer function is essential if you want to get into the shot yourself. Make sure your camera has this feature if you plan to go on holiday and capture photos of you and your friends or family having fun together.

An under water feature means your camera is safe to dive with, usually between 3 and 5 metres. Most dSLR cameras will require expensive separate housing so consider investing in a waterproof digital compact first.
