+ I've had the time to test the camera for a couple of months over a few jobs (wedding/portrait/personal) and it has performed without fault. Image quality is great. Untouched RAW files (I havne't shot in jpeg) seem to have a much deeper colour to them. (My previous camera was a 30D.) Low iso is amazing, though not as good as D700. I tested them both together in the same conditions. Focus at central point is good. Could always be better, but this is just like saying I could always do with more money. Have not tested camera in rain etc so can't say how it performed but it does take the careful use I've given it so far. Viewfinder much better. Live view focusing very useful for still life - however don't forget it will murder you batteries!

- HD video may not be all you thought so check out it's shortcomings in other reviews, as it is NOT a video camera in a SLR body! Focus points outside central focus points are fairly rubbish. Make sure you have the money for more storage space because RAW files are rather large (approx 24mb). But this is inevitable of better images. Could do with more photography features rather than HD video. OR, video features could be more complete. Even after the firmware upgrade.

+ Very good pro / serious amateur photographer camera. I use it now every day in preference to my old IDs MkII
Good battery life

- NOt as robust as the more expensive ID and 1 Ds I have but for everyday use that is OK. The lightweight makes up for the disadvantage in most cases

+ very sharp images, with the 21 million pixel is great when cropping, as it still retains sharpness in image. upgraded from a 40d not a lot of difference to look at, but when you take a photo you can really tell the difference in sharpness and colour tones. Video in HD looks clear but at the moment having trouble viewing HD on pc software.
love the upgrade view screen on back, the detail in your images can be seen very clear when zoomed right in or out great feature. all in all very good camera, as i only have taken about 500 pics I have got some true good images. The full frame images it produces is a real bonus having not had a camera like this before, but I can get used to this very quickly.

- not many to talk about, one thing it would be is the video button lock up, as it is very close to the menu I seem to press it by mistake more the often as I try to select menu.

+ A full frame DSLR with excellent image quality. Very good value for money when compared against the other Canon option of a 1DSMk2. Easy to upgrade to from a 40D or similar with all controls virtually the same. Battery life so far has been excellent and well in excess of the Canon stated value. Autofocus with moving subjects like aircarft has been very good.

+ Very high pixel count for the money, in an excellent body. When you factor in the video capability, there is little in the way of competition. Batteries last well and can be topped up. Get a good quality glass protector for the viewing screen.

- Batteries were expensive and were very hard to source at launch. Could have done with more focus points.

+ excellent pictures - seems to use a faster shutter speed for a given exposure than the MK I when in auto or semi-auto giving sharper pictures for hand-held shooting (although I've not done a detailed study of this!)
The settings panel displayed on the rear screen are an excellent way of adjusting settings without having to peer down at the top panel.

- I wish Canon would provide a simple flip-down lever for shutting off the eye-piece vewfinder when taking exposures remotely or for self-exposures rather than having to fiddle around with the rubber eyepiece blank on the camera strap. Otherwise an excellent camera.

+ I have used the 5D MKI for many years so was unsure whether to upgrade to the MKII but am extremely pleased that I have. The image quality is excellent and I am loving shooting at high ISOs. Having the built in sensor cleaning puts my mind at ease and so far I haven't had any problems with dust spots despite numerous lens changes. I also really rate the screen brightness which I have set on automatic and can now see my shots perfectly even in bright sunlight.

- I am a bit unsure about the auto colour balance which doesn't seem as good as the 5D MKI in mixed lighting, especially tungsten.

+ Already a Canon user, this was a short learning curve. Image quality is what I was after and it is superb. Save money, don't by the fastest lens or the longest lens, just use higher ISO (low noise) and pull up the centre of the image if you can't fill the frame. Seemples!

- Pricey but actually more bang for your buck compared to the 5D when it first came out. I've no complaints. Why not mould on a bigger battery compartment like my 1Dmk111?

One sensitive eye deserves another.

Full frame
With no cropping or magnification effect, the EOS 5D’s 12.8 MP full frame CMOS sensor (35.8 × 23.9mm) offers full freedom of expression. Wide lenses stay wide and the viewfinder is bright and open. Subtle tonal gradations are reproduced in shadow, midtone and highlights. A low-pass filter and on-chip circuitry suppress false colours and noise. Low (L:50) and high (H:3200) ISO settings extend the standard 100-1600 range.

3 fps
The EOS 5D can shoot a 60 large JPEG image burst at 3 fps.

Auto focus and flash
9-point AF is supported with 6 Assist AF points to improve subject tracking. AF modes include One Shot AF, AI SERVO AF and AI FOCUS AF. E-TTL II communicates with EX series Speedlites for consistently accurate flash exposures, even with reflective or off-centre subjects.

Large LCD
Illuminated by 6 LEDs, the bright 2.5" 230K pixel LCD is viewable from 85° in almost all directions.

Picture Style
Picture Style pre-sets simplify in-camera control over image processing, including a Monochrome mode supporting Black & White shooting with filter and toning effects. Picture Style pre-sets can be likened to different film types – each one offering a different colour response. Each pre-set has control over sharpness, contrast, colour tone and saturation.

DIGIC II
DIGIC II renders colours with precision and accuracy. Fast and efficient, DIGIC II minimises power consumption for prolonged battery life and delivers instant 0.2 second start up time.

JPEG and RAW
JPEG and RAW images can be written simultaneously.

Digital Photo Professional software
The Digital Photo Professional software permits high-speed processing of lossless RAW images.

Compact and robust
The EOS 5D’s tough, compact magnesium alloy body weighs just 810 grams; ideal for assignments requiring discretion.

Options and connectivity
The EOS 5D is compatible with over 60 EF lenses (excl. EF-S) and all EX Series Speedlite flash units. Untethered shooting is available with the optional WFT-E1 Wireless File Transmitter. USB 2.0 Hi-Speed permits fast file uploads, while Video Out allows review on a regular TV. An optional magnesium alloy battery grip extends shooting time and offers comfortable portrait shooting with a vertical shutter release. A Precision Matte focusing screen is interchangeable with Grid and Easy Manual Focus screen options.
