+ Excellent camera with most of the capacity and features that I have read about that are found on many of the more expensive DSLRs.

- Haven't really found any to speak of as yet.

My first Digital SLR so I have no experience or any other camera to compare with. But I am very much enjoying the experience and I find both the camera and the results it produces to be well up to my hopes and expectations.

Produces outstanding pictures even on automatic settings. Very easy to use and operate. Comprehensive manual is ideal for experts and informative for novices. Would certainly recommend the EOS400D to anybody. In fact a work colleague, after seeing the quality of my photos has now bought one!

+ overall a great camara, i am a professional photographer, doing wedding portrait and wildlife shoots. my main camara is the canon 5D but this has proven to be a quick and easy to use backup. ideal for shooting when you dont have loads of time to set up loads of equipment. even the flash is an asset.

- the lens is poor. but ok. in my opinion the first thing to do is get a better lens. ie 28mm to 105mm usm lens. using a good quality lens on this camara gives a professional look to the camara and the pictures.

- Manual modes don't allow any sensible tweaking i.e. can't turn on single point focus on portrait. No screen viewfinder mode means you have to buy a special eyepiece for tripod work (or lie on the ground and get wet). No foldy screen so even if you did have a viewfinder mode it would be no good.

+ Battery life is excellent.

- The cheapest decent Canon lens is more than I paid for the camera body. Images have a slightly 'soft' look to them. Lack of live view. The camera defaults to aperture settings that give the theoretical best results without consideration of the exposure time. Consequently, unless you are in good sunlight, using a tripod or have a very large aperture lens you need to pay constant attention to the exposure time to ensure that the images are sharp. This is worst in the pre-defined modes. It means that for point and shoot results it actually gives inferior results to my Nikon Coolpix 7900 digital compact. Fine if you really set up every shot properly though. To be honest I have been a little dissapointed by this as my first foray into DSLRs.

+ Fast. Easy to use if you're familiar with Canon. Auto white balance better than expected. High ISO speeds are very clean. Light-weight and compact but feels reasonably robust, good for those of us with small hands. In-built flash is very good.

- No spot metering options. No direct download via USB, although it is impied in the spec. This is just daft - even compact digitals do that! Image quality rating for JPG - not yet processed anything in RAW. When changing lenses its very difficult not to get your fingers all over the screen. Screen resolution is limited so it is difficult to judge image quality and select the keepers without downloading images. Most pre-set white balance options give poor results and setting your own white balance is awkward. Battery and card slots are awkward to use - battery is especially difficult to remove. Flash unit rattles when stored - disconcerting.

+ If your thinking of entering into the world of digital photography, I would recommend the Canon, the features available on this model, and the image quality are exceptional. The interchangeable lenses are a big advantage, enabling the user to have a basic point and shoot camera, and as confidence grows, experimenting with additional lenses and using various features. As with all Canon products you get what you pay for, and accessories can be costly. In my opinion the quality far outweighs the price.

- No real bad points. However, if the user is only using a camera for the odd snap shot I feel there are more suitable cameras on the market, for a fraction of the cost. This particular camera needs the user to study the instructions carefully to get the best results. Not the right camera for occasional use. this camera needs to be used regularly for best results.
