+ The image sabilisation makes it possible to hand hold in normal conditions even at maximum zoom. The image quality is very good.

- The image stabilisation uses up power so get an extra battery if you intend to use it a lot.

+ It's a fabulous lens, and it has a decent manual-focus ring, and the 'creep-lock' is a good idea.

- NOT supplied with a hood. For Gods' sake, a hood is a MUST!
The lock is confined to the 70mm end.

+ Very sharp for its weight (yes, an L series equivalent is sharper but it weighs 3x as much)
IS is very effective. I can get steady shots more than 2 stops below the non-IS speed.
It does not seem to drain the battery much faster than other IS lenses (Camera is a 30D).

- IS servo is a little noisy (compared to my L series IS lenses) but just as effective
Focusing isn't internal and there is no distrance scale on the barrel.
It is much slower to focus than my L series lenses (but they are shorter), particularly in poor light.
Again not as sharp as an L series lens but then it is 1/3 of the price and 1/3 of the weight.
Close focus distance wasn't as short as I had hoped.

+ Much more practical than the non-IS model I was replacingn s. Handheld shots at full zoom with Velvia 50 are as sharp as the non-IS on a tripod. Doesn't eat batteries as fast as I'd feared either.

+ Crisp images and very good detail. Good build quality and easy to use.

- Fairly large, but that is not really a criticism, you cannot have it all ways. Similarly quite heavy and works best with a tripod or monopod especially when used at maximum extension.

Manufacturer's Description

The advanced 3-stop Image Stabilizer (IS) technology of the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens makes it the ideal telephoto zoom when shooting in lowlight and at slow shutter speeds.

Features

  • Affordable and powerful
  • 3-stop Image Stabilizer
  • UD lens element improves image quality
  • Super Spectra coatings suppress flare and ghosting
  • Circular aperture provides pleasing background blur
  • Fast, quiet auto-focus

Canon’s affordable telephoto zoom with Image Stabilizer.

Affordable high magnification
The powerful yet reasonably priced EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM will appeal to nature and sports photographers looking to achieve sharper images when shooting handheld. Focal length translates to approx. 112-480mm equivalent in 35mm film format when fitted to cameras with APS-C size sensors.

Image Stabilizer
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM features Canon’s 3-stop Image Stabilizer (IS). Ideal for handheld photography, Canon’s Image Stabilizer allows photographers to use shutter speeds up to 3-stops slower with no perceptible increase in image blur. For stabilized panning, IS Mode 2 only corrects for unwanted vertical shake by switching off IS in the horizontal direction. IS is ideal for low light conditions, fast paced scenes and for shooting from moving vehicles. IS switches off automatically when the camera is mounted on a tripod.

UD lens element
A UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass lens element corrects chromatic aberration to achieve high resolution and contrast throughout the zoom range without colour fringing on subject outlines. Only lead free glass is used in the lens construction.

Super Spectra coatings
Optimised Super Spectra lens coatings and lens element shaping suppress flare and ghosting – more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. Coatings also help achieve true colour balance and sharp high contrast images.

Pleasing background blur
A circular barrel aperture helps to create an attractive, even background blur when isolating a subject at large apertures.

Fast auto-focus
The lens’s micro USM motor uses ultra-sonic frequency vibrations to drive rapid auto-focus with near-silent operation. Good holding torque ensures there is no overshoot. A high speed CPU and optimised AF algorithm contribute to AF speed literally faster than the human eye.

Accessories
Accessories include a lens hood (ET-65B) and a soft case (LP1222).
