+ Everything is built in to this small laptop and is so easy to carry around, It is ideal for business people on the move and also for children with the amount of games that are built into it. I got one for myself and my wife, and shown it to my parent and they purchased one and now my daughter wants one on her christmas list, Must be good to get 4 purchases so far from one family.

+ Nice solid build quality and works straight out of the box. Small size and fast boot-up makes it good for email when travelling.
- Small screen.

+ Small and light, very good for travelling. Excellent extra is the power lead: as is, it's a UK plug, unclip a plastic front to the plug, and it's a US plug. Excellent for web surfing, writing on the fly - the keyboard is ok once you get used to the smaller layout. 3 USB ports - keep your data on USB sticks and organise your filing system.
- Keyboard double-strikes and doesn't pick up some keystrokes on fast typing. Make sure you don't rest it on your lap when working - air vents on base of unit may get covered, with overheating and increased fan speed resulting.

Brent, Stockport, “music obsessed gadget freak”
+ Works like a dream straight out of the box ,fast boot up time ,3 usb ports more than enough for travelling around with .I connect a 160gb hard drive to mine that holds all the media I need plus work files and documents so most of the time I use it in preference to my desktop or my full size laptop .A great little piece of kit (not just for kids ).
- I havn't found any yet and I've had mine about 2 months now the only real problem is hiding it from the rest of the family !!

+ easy to use, light and easy to take with you wherever you want!

+ Long battery life. Very Portable due to size and weight.
- Limited storage.

David, Newcastle
+ It's tiny. The size of a large paperback novel. Great for taking around when you dont want to lug a normal laptop. The PSU is very compact - like a mobile phone charger. Runs windows XP no problem, and runs very quietly. The in built Linux is fine, but it comes with all the drivers for XP if you want them. Finally, of course, it's very cheap for a UMPC.
- The screen is a little too small vertically. The keyboard is a little unresponsive, and with the tiny keys I spent as much time going DELETE DELETE to fix the constant typos as I did hitting the right keys. Gets easier with practice though.

+ Easy to use; easy to upgrade; good support community; excellent wireless connectivity
- keyboard is a little small, and the right hand shift key is akwardly placed. I'd recommend that you replace Firefox with Opera on the machine (http://wiki.eeeuser.com/opera)

Graham, Medway, “58 year HGV driver”
+ easily transportable. wireless connection . great for working with on the move.
- small keypad if you are large fingered or fast typist. display window not always central. (easily rectified with ALT+left key click) battery life could be better.

+ Light weight, attractive, portable, excellent for travelling when weight is at a premium, looks dead cool!! Takes SD cards and memory sticks with three USB ports, wi fi connection is always good, easy to change from Linux to Windows XP (if not already running XP). Loads of online support in terms of forums which offer excellent advise from other users.
- Small hard drive space means extra programs have to be stored on either an SD card or memory. Also gets quite hot as it is a solid state disk.

+ It is so small.Ideal for travelling.I am using it on holiday abroad not actually connected by wifi but by cable in my accomodation, to the internet and I love to listen to Radio 5.At home I use the wifi. So easy to set it up ,Got loads of games and I always fancied not using Windows.Linux gives me everything I need on holiday.Skype Gmail Hotmail and all the local and national news .I download podcasts in mp3 and wma and listen to them while playing Freecell.I bought a mini mouse to go with it and 4Gig memory.
- Obviously the common moan about the battery,We get 4400,I believe a more powerful one is available elsewhere.

+ compact, good battery life, Open Office offers all the functionality I need and compatibility with Microsoft office. Good range of simple games and easy wireless network set up. Pre-configured Skype and ability to run iPlayer a bonus
- Some applications - particularly some games, have not been optimised for screen resolution - so some parts of play area are obscured.

+ I would rate the 701 EEE 6/10, it's by no way a full laptop, the absent hard drive and only having 4gb SSD is a downfall, however you can use a 16GB SD card in the slot on the side to store files, the screen is really bright and sharp and plays divx great (although you do have to tweek the video settings slightly as you get tearing on the video if you dont) The speakers are very loud something of this size, the EEE is tiny and would be excellent to take on holiday with you for using it to get your email, browse the web and watching videos, the plus side would be you could back all your photos up from your memory card onto a HDD.
- I would have to say the 701 EEE has two major problems, mainly the battery life, it is dire!, it lasts about 50 mins with the wifi turned on and screen brightness at mid way, you could not use this to watch a film without a power source being nearby, Asus state the battery should last 3.5 hours, however they also state you should get a 5200mAh battery, but a 4400mAh battery is supplied, the other major problem is the screen for web browsing, its too tiny and you have to scroll across on many pages, the 900 EEE has solved this problem because of the larger screen, it has a very very tight earphone socket, dont plug your ipod earphones into it because you will not get them out without breaking them (i've been through 3 sets of earphones since) it trashes the earphone socket. I would not recommend the Asus 701 EEE to anyone who likes long battery life, who doesnt like scrolling across web pages, the 900 is better but still with the poor battery life, the atom version is better still however not very good at playing back video so i hear, I'm waiting for the Dell Mini Inspiron.

+ Small, intuitive interface, good on-line user community, reasonably priced, fast boot-up
- Battery life is a bit weak - but does give plenty of warning when it is going to run out Pre-installed software is dated, and the graphical interface supplied for updating it does not cover all software on the machine

+ Great for kids. Extremely portable & robust. Very quick to boot up in Linux and not noticed any difference in use to Windows. Bought one for each of us in different colours.
- Bigger screen version has the edge over this model. Bigger battery is recommended. 2hrs is not really enough unless it is plugged in all the time.

+ Light and easy to carry around.
- Keyboard is smaller than ideal, although that is expected on a portable machine. The processor could do with being quicker to as it struggles at times with Xp installed.
14 May 2008
Henry, Norwich, “creative writing student”
+ Incredibly portable, easy to use, good wireless internet range, fast load-up.
- A little restrictive for more advanced users, but more options can be opened up with a few lines of code that are easy to find on forums. Not particularly good for video playback: some audio/video synching issues and low frame rate, most likely resulting from the unusual screen resolution.
15 May 2008
Wayne, Notts
+ Good build quality, not flimsy. Quick to boot (less than a minute)
- Screen size means you need to scroll side to side on web pages. Sometimes the wireless doesn't connect on boot (when set for connect on boot)and has to be done manually (small bad point really)

+ Excellent value for money product ideal for a small easily portable computer/childs first computer or many other uses. Screen although small handles most things without too many problems.
- Keyboard is a little small for everyday use unless you have very small fingers but that is down to the overrall size of the machine.

Anonymous, “Engineering research student”
+ Size, solidly-built, good quality screen, ease of use of default linux OS, picks up wireless networks well.
- If you want to run Windows (for specific Windows-only software, for example, it can be tricky to install it without an external (USB) CD or DVD drive. Inexperienced users (or those who don't relish a challenge) would be well advised to buy one of the Windows XP versions in the first place! Keyboard and screen are small, but this is the price you pay for getting an amazingly portable yet otherwise very fully-featured device (especially for the money)!

+ It's small, it's light and cute. The operating system is fine and I could open and edit all of my Microsoft Ofice document, speadsheets on it - even though the PC oly has its own version of those programs on it.
- The screen is very small and so is the keyboard. My fingers are quite small and I had trouble typing on it for any length of time.

Ellie, Wigan, “I'm quirky!”
+ Start up time is super quick, although slightly longer if you activate the active desktop - which I have. Easy Mode does exactly what it says on the tin, although you can't personalise it at all. Active desktop is great, and also "unlocks" some of the feature not accessible in the easy mode. Personalisation is available although getting icons to stay on the desktop is a pain. LInux is the best operating system EVER. So quick, smooth and easy to find your way around. So light and portable it never leaves my side, and I've never had a problem connecting to wifi no matter where I am. Over all it's the best money I've ever spent!
- Battery life could be a little longer, but then I do use it excessively. Active desktop set up could also be easier although I found all the info I needed on the Asus forums etc.

+ I would recommend this to anyone needing a little computer for browsing the internet or requiring a backup device to a main computer. It's also a great little device and very handy if your a geek and need to perform geek type tasks ;)
- Screen can prove to be a bit small at times but the eeepc is capable of driving an external monitor at 1440x900 if you need the little extra screen real estate from time to time.

+ It's robust, big enough to do what we need of it, small enough not to get in the way, and light enough not to be a nuisance when we travel.
- For a person who has never used Linux, it is a bit strange and takes longer to learn. Should we install XP we wonder?

+ Good price, small, light and very portable. As the OS on my EeePC is linux this allows access to a huge range of free software the Linux OS is also very compact. This PC will do anything that I want a full sized system to do, the built in WiFi, USB etc allow me to connect to systems and networks wherever I am.
- Needs a zoomable browser as standard (I now use opera) as a standard web page is too large for the screen. The small key board can be an issue although its a small price to pay for the convenience of a compact system.

Dave, Glasgow, “Mid-life slogger...”
+ My ideal device would be a Psion 5 with a USB port and MS Office compatible software. I really just want to be able to continue working while doing the daily commute. The EEEPC actually offers a whole lot more and gets used more as a result. Build quality is very good. The 7" screen is fine my needs - I'm not planning to do photo editing on the train. Open Office does most things fine. The Linux OS seems very stable and can be configured to work just like Windows if you want. The larger screen/memory version adds considerably to the price and is only worth considering if you must have Windows. Overall, I think this machine is brilliant!
- Only two grumbles: - I would have liked better battery life - you get a little over 2hrs which only just covers me to and from work. I'll maybe buy another psu to keep at work. - It gets surprisingly warm after 20-30mins continuous use. A little fan kicks-in and this no doubt affects the battery life.

+ Good range of software installed and easy to use, I'm quite happy to live without Microsoft. I can easily transfer files to and from my PC using my pen drive - the word processor and spreadsheet programme are compatible with Word and Excel. It's small enough to put in my handbag and I find it's really useful as I'm studying as well as working full time and I can carry it around with me with ease and work on assignments when I have any spare time.
- Battery life could be better

+ Lightweight & very portable - fits nicely into a shoulder bag so it doesn't look like you are carrying a laptop. Makes people look twice when you are using it as they can't believe its so small. Its a neat package and great for surfing the web as its nice and clear to read.
- When you first fire it up it looks more like a toy - but that can be changed to resemble a more adult looking machine. Lots of the functions appear to be aimed at children, with novelty graphics and simple games.
