+ Its ok for a basic MP3 player, sound quality is ok, size is quite good, and alot of memory for the price.

- Screen quality is fairly poor, battery life is pretty awful, especially if the player is turned off but the switch is still on green. Buttons don't alway press properly. I have put music onto the player before and it hasn't actually transferred it properly, but still takes up the memory.

+ the choice of media player in this category is massive, you won't go wrong with this one if you can live with the items i listed in the bad points, they are not really bad points, just niggly 'cos i'm fussy - its light weight, stylish, easy to operate, huge capacity memory, & looks like an i pod (kind of) may daughter calls it her 'my-pod'

- Supposed to be plug and play, on first plug in the PC forces you to format the drive - which wipes the demo content. I was worried it would wipe the operating system, but this remained as it must be hard coded. worked fine after the format. Won't play music while viewing your pictures; video conversion software instructions poor making it difficult to understand how to do it, no album art, Music library didn't show all albums, yet when view by file type all are seen and able to be played.

+ It has a good spec for the price.
You can drag and drop music files.

- Look-wise it resembles a cheap mobile circa 2001. The screen is so low-res it resembles a Gameboy. Strangely the video it ships with plays in quite high resolution. Looks aren't everything but it is genuinely offensive to look at and has very flimsy buttons. Get it if you jog at night.

+ Nice small unit with a good sound and internal batteries. Also, having an micro SD slot this enables memory expansion or changing memory content quick and easy.

- When you turn the machine off and on again you start at the beginning of your music collection so you have to organise intofolders to make it quicker to getto the later music in your collection.

+ Love it, it's so small and neat. Havent used the micro sd card facility yet, but that is a great extra. Could create cards with music on to suit your mood.

- Creating/adding/amending files could be structured better and explained better in Instruction manual. But overall, a great buy at a brilliant price!

+ Fantastic sound when you plug in so good ear phones.
Player looks smart and so simple to use.
Infinite storage capacity with micro sd slot.
Good radio too.
Amazing price.

- Supplied ear phones are very poor but that's usually the case with most mp3 players.

+ A neat compact MP3 player, pretty intuitive to use. Sounds okay, but not with the headphones supplied.

- Down sides: the on/off switch is going to break pretty quickly! and battery life's pretty poor too. I thought I'd done my homework but - the Archos website suggested the battery was replaceable, which it's not - it can only be recharged thru USB connection which means it's only really portable if you take your computer. Time to start saving for a Netbook!

+ the amount of albums i have stored on such a small device, is fantastic.Plus the instructions to download was very simple - even for some one of my age - 70+ yrs.

+ size,

- my husband is a builder and he finds it difficut to possition the mp3 player so it doesnt fall out his pocket ,it could do with a more secure way of fitting it to the inside of his work shirt.

MP3 Players Buying Guide

Manufacturer's Description

The brand new ARCHOS 2 is full of surprises.

It’s an all-in-one affordable credit card sized device. With 8 GB of disk space, lyrics display and photo viewing, it’s the perfect music companion.

Large inside, small outside
Music addicts finally have the product they’ve been waiting for: a small, very reasonably priced player featuring up to 8GB of disk capacity to store up to 4,000 songs*. We’re talking about days of non stop music! Need more? Well, the ARCHOS 2 also hosts a MicroSDHC card slot so that you can add more music to the already huge amount that you’ve got. It’s compatible with MicroSDHC (HC meaning High Capacity) and standard MicroSD cards, so you can add plenty more music to your player.

It’s really easy to organize it with the music library settings, letting you choose by artist, album or title. In a nutshell, the essentials. And since you’re asking it to play the most popular music files such as MP3 and WMA3, your ARCHOS 2 has you covered.

You can also clearly show your photos on the 1.8’’ screen. Sure the ARCHOS 2 is mostly about music, but why not keep a few dozen photos with you? It’s a lot easier than carrying a 7’’ photo frame in your pocket, isn’t it?

And since there is a nice little screen, we added lyrics files compatibility so that you can read what you are listening to, at all time.

Speak after the tone
Most discoveries and inventions have a part of randomness and serendipity in them. So we figured it was important that you could record your thoughts at the moment you have them. That’s why we equipped the ARCHOS 2 with a microphone. So that any thought crossing your mind can be available for a second and deeper review.

Of course, it’s more likely that you’ll use it to record directions or phone numbers. Just grab your ARCHOS 2, and speak after the tone.

*On average; songs based on 3.5 mins/song & 64 Kbits/s WMA, photos based on JPEG.
