+ It's a difficult device to recommend to an average user. If you are looking for just a phone then buy anything other than this. However, if you are prepared to accept that there is often a big trade off in order to play with the latest technology and design, then this is an amazing device to own. For all the annoying things that it does there are so many wows. You are buying a lot more than just a phone. It does so many cool things.

- The iPhone suffered from a very poor launch. The software was flakey and applications often crashed, GPS was unreliable, backing up took hours, and the battery life was appalling. A lot has been fixed in subsequent updates, but it has taken some time and issues still remain, especially that of the battery life. The add-on service MobileMe has not met expectations either, and whilst Apple has responded by extending the initial free period, it doesn't seem like much effort has gone into improving this. Also, the camera cannot focus on anything close-up - it's a shame, given that most other phones have better cameras these days.

+ It has a large easy to read screen. The phone is very clear and easy to use, as is the layout of the contacts section.
The ability to be able to down load a wide variety of applications and to have so much additional information available in a small device is just brilliant.
The calendar function is also very good.

- Could do with being more weather proof, and robust, a case is absolutely essential. The camera could be a higher spec and also needs a video camera for filming and video calls. The send button for SMS's should be moved further away from it's present location as it is easy to accidentally press it whilst writing a text.
Battery life could be better.

+ It has a lot of possibilities, and can be accommodated to fit any interest. if it's web browsing, looking up directions on maps, checking your e:mail, listening to music or watching video on it's gorgeous screen. there's something here for everyone.

- The battery Life is very short on 3G and won't even get you though a day before you need to charge it again. There's no Flash on the web so my space pages won't play music. There's no video recording using the camera, (unless you have a jail-broken iphone), no copy and paste in safari or between apps, no picture messaging (although you can receive them).

+ Taken overall the iPhone is an exceptional device. Probably the most important thing about the device is the way the user interface, both software and hardware, has been thought out and feels "joined up" across all of the various applications. Each of the applications on the iPhone have been available on other devices previously but, aside from the camera, the iPhone just does it better. Looking at what I use most, that would have to be email, web browser, and the built in iPod. The GPS / maps functions is less useful and my car already has an excellent device factory fitted. Oh, and of course, in today's volatile market the stock ticker is getting regular use.

- If I was employed by Apple on the iPhone product range then the first point to be addressed is the battery life and the inability for the end user to change batteries and therefore carry spares. The iPhone tends to be used much more than mobile phones in the past but the battery capacity does not reflect this.
Bluetooth support is rudimentary to say the least. Those of us with car phone systems that employ SIM Access Profile are forced to makle the decision either to use a spare Nokia device or be uncontactable in the car (which is not always such a bad thing).
The camera, when compared with that in the Nokia N95, for example, comes up very short. Personally, I would prefer that phone manufacturers dropped the camera altogether and left it to the experts like Nikon, Canon, or Olympus.

+ What is good about the IPhone? The iphone is a fantastic phone because it is packed with useful functions. While you always carry your phone, you are in fact carrying your music player, camera, sat nav, and a lot more. The phone runs on 100% software, which makes allows programmers to write their own programs that will make your phone the ultimate tool. The best feature would be the internet access that allows you connect to the internet on the go.

- One thing that we could always benefit from is the battery live. The battery will last if it is just intended to make calls.

+ Great usability, great storage capacity...it does everything I want!

- Without built in maps for SAT NAV if you are out of your area (in germany) the GPS will not function without either paying a roaming data package or high rates. Should offer ability to download maps to use regardless of roaming location. Additionally, GPS should offer ability to provide spoken directions like most GPS models, perhaps an app? Should also sync with Bluetooth devices such as an external keyboard for typing larger docs while on the go (airport, long-haul flights, hotel rooms, etc...)

+ By far the most stylish looking phone out there. No one is even close! Web browsing is spot on, loads of cool applications, it's an iPod Touch, the touch screen is an absolute dream to use ..... the list goes on.

- Sadly, this phone could so easily be perfect .... but it's not. Desperately needs to handle Flash video and Java! The Bluetooth is a misleading feature as it doesn't connect with other phones - so forget about sharing that cool photo you just shot with your friends. iPhone cannot shoot video. iPhone cannot save 'Drafts', nor 'Forward' text messages! Speaking of texts, you cannot delete individual texts from the 'threaded' conversation!

Apple also seem committed to improving the device. as they have fixed all the bugs from the first release.
Downloadable games, apps and tunes from apple is also fantastic.

- Battery life can be a bit short, especially if you're hammering Wifi or 3G.
The list of Iphone 3G supported accessories is also a bit low at the moment, as its not backwards compatible with the previous Iphone chargers / cases etc.

+ Overall its the best phone i've ever had, life without my iphone is something i struggle to imagine. I can do a bit of everything, which makes it a great piece of kit.

- It can't do anything great, it's ok at everything, apart from music but you would expect that after all. Battery is comparable with other similar phones, so can't complain too much but it's not a business tool.
Camera is a waste of time, just not up to the job.
Web browsing is great, almost as good as using a pc BUT again it's not quite there, you can cut/paste which makes it hard work and you can't save anything from it, like piccies for instances. The worst bit would be the lack of MMS, how can it not have MMS???

+ The combination of email, web access and a great phonebook make this a fantacsic phone. The sync to my mac is seamless and provides an excellent backup facitlity. I havn't bothered to upload much of my iTunes but that works well too.

- The battery life is short but given the size of the screen and what it does it is understandable. The lack of a TomTom styled 'turn left at the next junction' satnav application remains a disapointment. Finally, the lack of an easy way to keep the screen live (eg when plugged ito a car charger) and not turning itself off after 1 minute so that you can use it on the move is frustrating.

+ The device is exceptional for managing multiple e-mail accounts on the go and Web browsing is made so simple on such a small device. The 3G and wireless connectivity perform extremely well and you can live with Edge connectivity when you find yourself in remote parts of the country. The general availability of standard IPOD functionality, and now new software availability from Itunes are making this a truely great smartphone.

- With Web browsing, e-mail and video playback being so good you can't help yourself in using them. The downside is that you have to charge up your device every evening but this is the same for most devices so can I really complain.

The GPS features are amazing and have helped me discover new places get places quicker. The games and apps. that are available are great fun and/or very useful.

- Although the features that the iPhone have are beautifully thought out, I can't believe that such a cutting edge device has some really basic features missing. MMS messaging is the most apparent to me. I've heard the argument that email is better but email is a totally different function. you don't get a 'text received' alert with email and so far most of my friends don't get email on their phones (not all phones are as easy to set up as the iPhone).

+ The iPhone applications are so integrated, and it i so easy top set up syncing. I sync between my work, home and laptop computers with absolute ease. The Apps store is fantastic, and there are so many free and low price aps available, it makes the iPhone a real pocket computing device. Unlike most others I find the camera perfectly adequate for a phone camera. The iPhone has very quickly become an essential part of my life.

- I would like battery life to be longer - but this is a problem for all phones with decent screens.

+ The touch and stretch screen is brilliant. It's wonderful having the phone, iPOD and WiFi and GPS all in one unit. I also like the headphones and microphone when listening to iPod and getting phonecalls simultaneously.

- The 3G coverage isn't very good yet. The iPOD loses its place when synchronising and it's difficult to remember where you left off. This is especially important with audio books.
Battery life needs to be improved.

- Battery life isn't great especially if you use all the elements of the phone regularly. Also the camera has no flash or zoom although it does take good picture for a 2mp camera.

The sound from the speaker is awful. 3g is much quicker on every other product i've ever had (and doesnt decrease tha battery life twice as fast)

- battery life much improved after last software update but still occasionally drops off quickly; sms system looks beautiful and works fine for me, but won't be as fully featured as some for other people; camera fine, but no mms (except through email) and no video camera (but you can always watch a high quality downloaded movie instead!!).

Mobile Phone Buyers Guide

Manufacturer's Description

Home Screen
Get instant access to whatever you need. The Home screen takes you to iPhone applications and Web Clips with a single tap — even when you’re on a call. And no two Home screens are alike. That’s because you can customize yours with whatever applications and Web Clips you choose.

Customize your Home screen.
Arrange the icons on your Home screen any way you want. Even move them to another Home screen. Create up to nine Home screens for quick access to your Web Clips and any applications you download from the App Store.

Add Web Clips.
If you check the same websites every day, create Web Clips and access them directly from your Home screen with a single tap.

Go home.
No matter where you are on iPhone, pressing the Home button takes you to the Home screen. You can also press the Home button to go back to your first Home screen.

Phone
With iPhone, making a call is as simple as tapping a name or number. All your contacts appear in a list you scroll through with a flick of your finger. And Visual Voicemail plays your messages in any order you want, just like email.

Tap into calls.
Tap any phone number in Contacts, Favorites, an email, an SMS text message — or almost any other application — to make a call. If you have a lot of contacts, use the search feature to quickly find specific names. iPhone also makes it easy to talk to more than one person at the same time. With a tap, you can switch between calls or create a conference call.

Make contact.
Building your iPhone address book is simple. Contacts sync via iTunes each time you connect iPhone to your computer. You can even add contact information directly from Maps and SMS messages with just a few taps.

Answer in a pinch.
The stereo headset that comes with iPhone features a high-performance microphone — fitted with a windscreen for added clarity — that also serves as a Send/End button you pinch to answer or end calls.

See your voicemail.
Listen to your fourth voicemail message without listening to the three before it. Visual Voicemail shows you a list of all your messages — and who they’re from — so you can play them in any order you please.

Get push contacts for enterprise.
With support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, iPhone gives you push contacts and lets you access your company’s Global Address List.

Mail
Email on iPhone looks and works just like email on your computer. With support for popular email servers and providers — including MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo! Mail, Google Gmail, and AOL — and most industry-standard IMAP or POP mail systems, iPhone puts email in your pocket.

See it all.
iPhone supports rich HTML email, so images and photos appear alongside text. And you see email attachments in their original format, not as stripped-down versions. Rotate, zoom, and pan in more than a dozen standard file and image formats, including PDF, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and also view iWork attachments.

Send fast.
iPhone recognizes email addresses in different applications. If you run across an email address on a web page or a map listing, for example, just tap it and iPhone opens a new message with the address already in it.

Type smart.
The intelligent iPhone keyboard with built-in dictionary predicts and suggests words as you type, making it fast and easy to write email.

Get push email for enterprise.
Receive and respond to work email fast on iPhone. New support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync gives you push email that arrives automatically.

Safari
iPhone features Safari — the most advanced web browser ever on a portable device. And with 3G and Wi-Fi, you can browse the Internet really fast. iPhone also syncs your bookmarks from your PC or Mac and has Google and Yahoo! search built in.

Browse anywhere.
Access the web with Safari whether you’re connecting via EDGE, faster 3G, or even faster
Wi-Fi. iPhone automatically connects you to the fastest network available.

Zoom with a view.
Get a closer look at any web page by zooming in and out with a tap or a pinch. View websites in portrait or landscape mode: Rotate iPhone 90 degrees and the website rotates, too.

Clip it.
If you check a website frequently — a favorite newspaper, blog, or sports site — why not create a Home screen icon for it? Make a Web Clip with Safari, and your favorite sites are always just a tap away.

iPod
With its beautiful 3.5-inch widescreen display and Multi-Touch controls, iPhone is also one amazing iPod. Browse your music in Cover Flow and watch widescreen video with the touch of a finger.

Touch your music.
Scroll through songs, artists, albums, and playlists with a flick. Browse your music library by album artwork using Cover Flow. Even view song lyrics that you’ve added to your library in iTunes. Get a call while listening to music? A pinch of the microphone on your iPhone headset pauses the tune and answers the call.

Watch in widescreen.
iPhone brings you a video experience unlike any other portable device. Watch TV shows and movies from the iTunes Store on the 3.5-inch widescreen display. Just tap to bring up video controls whenever you need them.

Sync it all.
Audio and video from your iTunes library sync to your iPhone when you connect it to your computer. Choose what you want to sync and iTunes does the rest.

SMS
With a chat-style view and an intelligent Multi-Touch keyboard that predicts and suggests words as you type, iPhone texts smarter than any smartphone.

Text like you chat.
SMS messages appear on your iPhone as an ongoing chat, so it’s easy to pick up a conversation where you left off. Scroll through conversations with a flick, or scroll to the top and tap the Call button to talk live.

Type right.
Text with speed and accuracy on the predictive Multi-Touch keyboard. As you type, iPhone suggests corrections. It also features a built-in dictionary and even learns words you use often.

Get together.
Save time by sending an SMS message to more than one person at the same time. Add as many recipients as you want.

Maps with GPS
Find your location, get directions, and see traffic — all from your phone. Maps on iPhone 3G combines GPS, Wi-Fi, and cell tower location technology with the Multi-Touch interface to create the best mobile map application ever.

Find yourself.
iPhone 3G finds your location via GPS or by triangulating your position using Wi-Fi and cellular towers. Drop a pin to mark your location, bookmark it, or share it with others via email. iPhone 3G also finds points of interest by keyword: Search for “coffee” and iPhone shows you every cafe nearby.

Enjoy the view.
Just like Google Maps on your computer, Google Maps on iPhone lets you switch between views of map data, satellite images, hybrid view, or street view. Multi-Touch makes the difference. Tap to zoom, pan, and change your view on the move.

Get directions.
Get directions to wherever from wherever. View a list of turn-by-turn directions or follow a highlighted map route and track your progress with live GPS tracking.

See traffic.
Maps on iPhone shows you live traffic information, indicating traffic speed along your route in easy-to-read green, red, and yellow highlights.

iTunes
Shop the iTunes Music Store over both Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Choose from millions of DRM-free iTunes Plus songs. And pay the same price you do on iTunes on your computer.

Buy on the fly.
On iPhone, you can access the iTunes Music Store over both cellular and Wi-Fi networks — and buy high-quality, DRM-free iTunes Plus songs. So no matter where you are, you can browse New Releases, What’s Hot, and Genres. Take a look at Top Songs and Top Albums. Or find exactly what you’re looking for with a quick search. Play a 30-second preview of any song, then tap once to buy it. Your music starts downloading instantly, and you can keep tabs on its progress by tapping the Downloads button. You can also access thousands of free podcasts on the iTunes Store, download them, or stream them live via Wi-Fi or your cellular network.

Sync it back.
When you connect iPhone to your computer, the music you bought on the go syncs to your iTunes library. If you’ve only partially downloaded a song to iPhone, your computer completes the download automatically.

App Store
Tap into the App Store and you’ll find applications in every category, from games to business, education to entertainment, finance to health and fitness, productivity to social networking. These applications have been designed to take advantage of iPhone features such as Multi-Touch, the accelerometer, wireless, and GPS. And some are even free. You can download them wirelessly and start using them right away.

Get applications anywhere.
The App Store on iPhone works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi, which means it’s accessible from just about anywhere. Browse categories, do a keyword search, or take a look at recommendations. Then download and install applications directly onto your iPhone.

Stay up to date.
Buy an application from the App Store and you always have access to the latest version. iPhone tells you whenever an application update is available. When a red number appears on the App Store icon, you know how many updates are ready to download.

Calendar
iPhone makes it easy to make plans. The built-in Calendar goes with you anywhere, works with a tap, and syncs seamlessly to the calendar on your computer.

Add events.
Your schedule is always in your pocket with iPhone. Add events to your calendar and set a custom alert with a few taps on the Multi-Touch display.

Stay in sync.
When you sync your iPhone with your computer, the events you’ve created on the go sync back to Microsoft Outlook on a PC, and iCal or Entourage on a Mac. And all the events you’ve added on your computer sync to your iPhone.

Get push calendar for enterprise.
Now that iPhone supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, meeting invitations are pushed to your iPhone and appear immediately. Check for schedule conflicts, review the meeting agenda, and see who else is attending. From anywhere.

YouTube
iPhone keeps you entertained with a YouTube application that opens right from the Home screen, so you can watch YouTube wherever you are. Videos load fast over 3G or Wi-Fi. Find a video you like? Bookmark it or share it with a friend.

Watch what you want.
Explore Featured, Most Viewed, Most Recent, and Top Rated videos. Or search for the video you want with a keyword search. Once you find what you’re looking for, bookmark it to watch later.

Share from anywhere.
Email your favorite videos to your favorite people. Tap the Share button on any YouTube video detail page and iPhone creates an email with the video link already in it.

Photos + Camera
With a built-in camera and an advanced photo application, iPhone is the most photo-friendly phone ever. It takes snapshots, automatically syncs photos with your PC or Mac, displays albums with the flick of a finger, and posts pictures directly to a MobileMe Gallery.

Snap photos.
The iPhone camera snaps shots with a tap. Photos you take appear in the Camera Roll, and they sync back to your computer the next time you connect. iPhone even geotags your photos with information about where they were taken.

Sync photos.
iPhone uses iTunes to sync the photos you have in iPhoto on a Mac or Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Photoshop Album on a PC. All the photos on your computer sync to your iPhone, so you can look at them — and share them — anywhere you go.

Share photos.
Show thousands of photos from the palm of your hand. Rotate iPhone to see a photo in landscape. Pinch to zoom in or out. Drag to reposition. Email a photo to a friend, set it as your wallpaper, or share it in a MobileMe Gallery.

Save photos.
If you run across a great image on the web — or get one in an email — save it to your photo library on iPhone. From there, it acts just like any other photo: You can set it as your wallpaper, share it on the web, or pass it on.

Stocks, Weather, and Notes
Get stock quotes and weather reports with a tap. Use Notes to jot down information you want to keep with you, remember for later, or share via email.

Check stocks.
Stocks on iPhone shows you performance information for any stock you choose. When you want more details about a stock’s performance, tap the Y! for instant access to Yahoo! Finance.

Get weather.
Check worldwide weather at home or away. Add the cities you want, then flick back and forth to get six-day forecasts for each. Tap the Y! to open a Yahoo! city guide that shows you what’s happening, rain or shine.

Take notes.
Forget the pen and paper. Use Notes on iPhone to write yourself a quick note and keep important information on hand. There’s even a built-in email function that lets you send notes to yourself or others.

Calculator
Calculator on iPhone combines the simplicity of a pocket calculator with the power of a full-featured scientific calculator.

Calculate simply.
When you tap the Calculator icon, iPhone shows you a simple application with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and memory functions. Use it just as you would a pocket calculator.

Calculate scientifically.
Rotate iPhone and your pocket calculator transforms into a sophisticated scientific calculator with dozens of functions for solving complex scientific and advanced mathematic problems.

3G Speed. Worldwide.
3G technology gives iPhone fast access to the Internet and email over cellular networks around the world. iPhone 3G also makes it possible to do more in more places: Surf the web, download email, get directions, and watch video — even while you’re on a call.

Multi-Touch Control
With its large Multi-Touch display and innovative software, iPhone lets you control everything using only your fingers. Type using the predictive keyboard, glide through albums with Cover Flow, scroll through photos with a flick, or zoom in and out on a section of a web page — all courtesy of Multi-Touch.

GPS and Beyond
GPS technology and iPhone software come together to create a new dimension in mobile phone mapping. Get a fast fix on your location. Track your progress as you go. Use applications that take advantage of GPS navigation features. All from iPhone 3G.

Accelerometer. Made to Move.
iPhone responds to motion using a built-in accelerometer. When you rotate iPhone from portrait to landscape, the accelerometer detects the movement and changes the display accordingly. So you immediately see the entire width of a web page, view a photo in its proper aspect ratio, or control a game using only your movements.

Smart Sensors
Built into iPhone are two small but intelligent sensors that pick up cues from the environment and adjust the screen accordingly. These sensors both work to maximize the battery life and improve your iPhone experience.

Keyboard
The intelligent, software-based iPhone keyboard does more than a physical keyboard ever could. It’s there only when you need it, it adapts to any application, and it changes its keys to support typing in 21 languages. All you do is tap.
