+ After years of waiting for various PC laptops to resume from standby it's good to have a machine that fires up in under five seconds. It connects to everything in my PC and Linux world and it looks good.

- Got to learn Objective C and Cocoa to write my own stuff, but then that's not too bad...apart from that the battery life couls do with a little beefing up.

+ Good design, fast boot time, decent sound for a small laptop.

- Bigger hard drive would be nice, but the OS doesn't seem as bloated as windows, so 160 MB might do for a while.

+ It looks and feels fantastic! Ok its pricier than most top spec laptops from other brands but strangely you can really sense what your paying for. You may not be able to put your finger on it exactly but their are just so many clever little things that always put a cheeky smile on your face when you discover them by accident.
Mac OS is superb too. Having never used a mac before i was worried i'd struggle with it but now I can safely say that i'll never consider going back to windows.
You won't be disappointed, trust me!!

- The only down side is that it is not great for playing games, saying that it wasn't made for running games so you shouldn't really hold it against it. Its kinda like saying my fridge is great but it doesn't freeze anything.
I have no other complaints, oh expect its a nightmare to keep clean. Have to wipe it once a day at least.

+ As a university student, it is safe with excellent protection built in; and studying a design course means that it is the best platform possible for Abode software. Also the price was fantastic as it was the cheapest and most reasonable than anywhere else; and is great when on the move, as I am very often.

+ Look, Ease of use, even to someone like me who has used PCs all her life. Performance, Applications, no virus worries, Finding something new and amazing everytime you use it.

- Battery life is a bit short but can usually last quite a while. Possibly need to buy new software as some don't work on both PC and Mac.

+ The Macbook has the excellent build quality and intuitive interface that you would expect from an Apple product. I previously owned the white macbook and if anything this is an improvement because its easier to keep clean. Also the screen seems slightly less reflective, which is great for viewing video and photos.

- The keyboard is not backlit, but I feel the difference in price to the very similar macbook-pro more than makes up for that.

+ Its an elegant machine and works well. I have not purchased a MAC before however I think I would do so again in the future.

- A bit slower than I thought it would be. It needs to come with a proper manual to help those who have not used this system before.

Laptop Buyers' Guide

Manufacturer's Description

Beautifully engineered, inside and out.

From the stunning aluminium unibody to the powerful graphics architecture, the new MacBook makes progress a beautiful thing.

Square one: a solid block of aluminium

Instead of assembling a notebook from many minor parts, the new MacBook was reinvented from just one: the new, solid-aluminium unibody enclosure. It gets full credit for making MacBook thinner, lighter and even more stunning. But it’s not all beauty. Because of the unibody, this MacBook is more durable than ever. It was designed to take on your world. So slip it into your backpack or briefcase and pull it out wherever you go — it’s impressive in any setting.

Even the keyboard is advanced.

The MacBook keyboard is solid, responsive and comfortable. Just put your fingers on the crisp keys and you’ll feel pure typing bliss. An illuminated keyboard, a popular feature of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, now comes standard on the 2.4GHz MacBook model. So when you’re in low-light settings such as airports or lecture halls, you can always see what you’re typing. It’s a luminous feature for anyone on the go.

Hey, where’s the button?

The amazing new trackpad doubles as a button — just press down anywhere and consider it clicked. No separate button means there’s 39 percent more room for your fingers to move on the silky glass surface. Now that Multi-Touch gestures have come to MacBook, all the function is in your fingers. Use two fingers to scroll up and down a page. Pinch to zoom in and out. Swipe with three fingers to flip through your photo libraries and rotate an image with your fingertips. Using the new four-finger swipe gesture, swipe up or down to access Exposé modes and left or right to switch between open applications. If you’re coming from a right-click world, you can even configure a right click area to access shortcut menus. The more you use the Multi-Touch trackpad, the more you’ll wonder what you ever did without it.

All-new Multi-Touch trackpad

Multi-Touch comes to MacBook in a spacious, silky-smooth trackpad that is also the button.

Simply stunning.

The beautifully seamless, remarkably thin design isn’t the only gleaming quality of the LED-backlit display. Open your MacBook and you’re instantly greeted by glorious full screen brightness. The aluminium enclosure is perfectly integrated with the glass screen, so the sharp picture appears larger and more stunning than ever. Anything you view, including the glossy widescreen display itself, is a spectacular experience. The LED-backlit display is more power efficient, which translates into longer battery life. And it’s mercury- and arsenic-free, so it’s greener than ever.

Cooler creatures. Richer worlds.

The NVIDIA GeForce 9400M brings 5x faster, discrete-level graphics performance to MacBook.1 That means high-end, high-speed 3D game-playing power. Graphics-intensive applications such as iPhoto and iMovie are smoother, clearer and faster than ever. With powerful NVIDIA graphics, you’ll enjoy movies and video with richer colours and finer details. Even when you flip through Cover Flow or use the Dashboard, you can see the difference NVIDIA performance makes.

Graphics Performance

The NVDIA GeForce 9400M delivers up to 5x faster graphics performance.

Take it all along.

With a hard drive up to 320GB,2 you can load MacBook with movies, photos and documents, and take everything with you. You also have the option to upgrade to a 256GB solid-state drive, which has no moving parts, for enhanced durability. With the ultrafast 8x SuperDrive, burn everything you watch, listen to, or create onto DVDs and make room for even more.

Ports with possibilities.

MacBook is iPod, iPhone, digital camera and external hard drive ready. You’ll find two USB 2.0 ports to connect a wide variety of peripherals. You’ll also see a Mini DisplayPort — a perfect fit for the new Apple LED Cinema Display. The MagSafe power port gives you a trip-proof connection to safeguard your system and valuable data. And you can use the Kensington lock slot to protect your MacBook, battery and hard drive.

Think fast.

Inside the new MacBook is a powerful Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at speeds up to 2.4GHz. MacBook also boasts an increased 1066MHz frontside bus and next-generation 1066MHz DDR3 memory. That faster memory lets you quickly and easily manipulate large, complex files and keep more applications open at once.
