Advent 4211 Reviews: Windows XP Home 10" Screen Laptop computer

+ Intergrated camera is very good, processor is fast. Was bought for my husband to use offshore and he loves it, exactly what he needed.

- The touch mouse is a little hard to get used to and tends to be a bit over enthusiastic at times, clicking on things when your trying to scroll etc

+ Easy to use small and compact

- Was not aware at time of purchase that no Optical drive with this product. does cause problems when wanting to install programs.

+ Great for internet access, watching DIVXs and doing basic Office stuff.

- Poor battery life (but I knew about this before I bought it).

+ Nice little machine. Don't be put off by the 'recon'. It means that it has been back to the factory & checked, after a customer return. Mine was in a brown cardboard box, but it was in PERFECT condition. It was the cheapest I could find anywhere! I've installed Office 2007 Enterprise on it & it works really well. I love it!

- Battery life is poor. Wireless card is switched off by default and have to press F6(?) to switch it on; this wouldn't be a problem except it isn't mentioned anywhere so had to search forums for a clue why i couldn't connect to internet straight away

+ Great netbook will very clear display, Keyboard seems a little small when you first use it but is great once you get used to it! I'd recommend putting an extra 1Gb of RAM in as it picks up the overall performance of this great portable PC!

- Battery life not fantastic, but this is not a great problem because you are never too far from a wall socket are you?

Was very unstable until all updates applied - all sorts of strange effects such switching the screen off when running on battery for a short while.
Would be nice to have XP Pro as an option.

+ Small, lightweight and compact - great for college and travelling and doesn't take up alot of room.
Just does what a PC does, but in a much smaller package!

- No disc drive, had to buy an external drive. Wireless network not great, but with an ethernet cable, it's great.

+ Extremely portable, the 10" screen is the perfect compromise between portability and usability, combined with a near-fullsize keyboard. This is the exact same unit as the MSI Wind, just rebadged and cheaper!

- The supplied battery is only a 3 cell and has limited life. 6 & 9 cells are readily available though.

+ It just worked straight out of the box. It did every thing my expensive desktop does and in many cases did it better.

- There are no bad points - just a few things that I would have preferred. A bigger capacity battery although I have never actually run out. A laptop case although I have since bought one.

+ The keyboard is the best part. It fills the width of the netbook, its keys are a good size, it feels well made and it's responsive.

- The single rocker bar for the left and right mouse action would have been better as 2 separate buttons.
Battery life is average and really should be better to make this a truly portable device without the need to carry the power pack for when the battery dies.

+ Good size screen and usable keyboard. The Advent appears to be well put together and solid. Wifi connection always ok, and no problems browsing web or downloading from i-player. Fine for watching video. Built in card reader handy for copying photos from camera when travelling. Very portable.

- Battery needs charging after only a couple of hours' use. Scrolling documents not particulalry smooth.

The computer keeps overloading itself, so I have to keep taking the battery out and pressing the start button for 30 seconds.

+ Small and light with enough memory to drive XP - which came pre-installed. Better than the basic e-PC's around as it has an 80gb hard drive. This enough to run MS-Office, store a few photo's and music. Just perfect for my wife. Wi-Fi enabled too.

+ It is just stunnning, I love it. Small enough to carry around and not get in the way on a desk but big enough to be be usable. My collegues are work were very impressed with it and it takes a lot to impress them! Quick boot up time. Has everything, wireless, webcam, hyperthreaded processor 1GB memory etc etc etc.

- Far outweighed by the good points the two bad points are the battery life is very short, about 2 hours and I find I keep pressing th Fn key instead of the Ctrl key but thats pretty minor.

+ This is a very handy machine for internet connection, also very useful for Mircrosoft Office, of course it is not suitable for Video Editing, but it is not for that.

- The ony gripe I have is the volume of the inbuilt speakers, very quiet, although through headphones very acceptable.

+ This machine was a good buy, size and weight makes it perfectly portable, reasonable graphics and speed, and a good selection of basic software.

- No carry bag or pouch included; battery life could be better, touchpad a bit picky, but there again I've never found a touch pad that wasn't picky

+ Got this for my 14 year old son. He loves it!! Ideal size to slip into his school bag & looks cool.

+ It's a cracking piece of kit. You do need to have an external CD/DVD drive, though, to load software which is too large to be copied onto the average pen drive. Screen clarity is excellent for its size. And, with XP as its operating system, it's fast.

- Shame about the battery, but then it's up to the battery manufacturers to keep up with the industry by inventing lighter, smaller but higher performance batteries, after all, it's only the size and weight of the battery which makes standard laptops so heavy.

+ Great for searching internet. Light and easy to use. Ideal if you out and about. Would highly recommend it.

+ Excellent value for money, compact, powerful for intended use without useless frills and bloatware (Windows Vista, optical drive etc. aren't needed 99% of the time and are a nuisance when they aren't being used), features that are included are excellent (Bluetooth, WiFi, webcam + mic, card reader, full hard drive etc.), decent battery life, compact power pack, battery saving feature, excellent and bright screen that's small enough to remain compact but big enough to be easily legible, excellent keyboard for this or any size laptop.

- Would be nice to have a slip case provided with the laptop, quality of finish on outer case.

- very poor battery life with supplied battery. bulky and awkward power supply (would prefer single unit like a mobile phone supply and connector at the back of the machine. usb ports should be towards the back sides of the machine rather than the front, gets in the way of typing and more vulnerable to becoming unplugged. SD card not flush with the side of the machine when inserted so vulnerable to damage and/or accidental ejection. tech support not as user-friendly as it could be.

+ I did a fair bit of research,then chose this the minute it was released. I bought the first one to take on holiday, for which it should be ideal.However it was a nightmare,refusing to start up then completely stopped getting wifi and was a total disaster so had to be replaced when I got back.Very annoying.The new one seems ok and it does fit in my big handbag.Great for showing photos to friends.Its handy for my son to take to school, and we will try taking it on holiday again.Its almost perfect for what I want.

- The mousepad on the original had a useful scroll function up the right hand side which this one doesn't.
Its often rather slow compared with other computers in the house.
It often drops its wifi connection, even though it says signal strength high.
I wish it came with a thin protective case of some sort.

- Too many build quality problems, this is my third and even with this one everything does not work out
of the box. for example I had to use the realtek wireless adaptor and not the windows one ....Overall it takes a while to set up, not good at all, I am an IT professional, most people would not know how to sort the problems.

+ The Advent 4211 Netbook is everything it purports to be. To date, it's done everything it says on the box. My wife keeps it in a drawer in the kitchen and pops it out to look up recipes on the web. Cool.

- Track pad is a little sensitive but this is fixed with BIOS update

- The left shift key is positioned slightly differently to regular keyboards, so it takes a while to get used to.

+ Fantastic tiny little laptop. It does exactly what I want it to do - i.e. it's on hand all of the time just to connect to the net - It also has enough power to use all of the major office suite - so I can view doc's and spreadsheets if I want to and fits into the front pocket of my briefcase. The 10 inch screen is a must, as it uses all of the available space (in this, I mean the 7 inch screen wastes a lot of space without giving any benefit in reduction of size of the overall PC)

+ Good build quality decent sized keyboard (hard disk much preferred over the far lower capacity Solid State storage in some rival units) If you need a compact machine but dont want to compromise useability this size of machine hits the sweet spot

- for a machine so light and easy to carry all day, it really could do with longer battery life as a standard option In common with all of the current crop of Atom based netbooks the graphics capabilities are based on a basic intel integrated chipset. While these low cost netbooks are never going to meet the demands of highspec games a bit more by way of video acceleration (to take some of the load off of the Atom CPU when it came to video playback) would have been a welcome addition and made the machines near perfect.

+ Small, very portable with great conectivity (Wifi, Lan and bluetooth), also plugging in periferals such as GPRS modems was catered for via the 3 high speed USB2 ports. the device is supprisingly fast to boot up and also runs most office based applications quickly. Battery life is also okay, approx 1.5 hours with constant use and Wifi enabled.

- I initally had issues with booting, the machine would turn itself off immediatly after starting several times, this appears to have been cured by updating the bios. The screen size has occationally been cause of a few troubles when opening application dialog boxes, with the bottoms of the boxes being 'cut off' by the screen hight and consequently clicking on the 'apply' changes button being missing or hidden.

+ It's portable, has a good keyboard, the screen is easy to read and web pages are optimised for the screen size.

- The supplied battery only lasts about 1 hour on full charge.

+ Size, weight and so-far apparent toughness. The design is functional and unpretentious. What you see is what you get - and barring the negative point below - I like it a lot.

- The ridiculous positioning of the control and function key on the left. I constantly fall foul of this. Why was it built like that? Like most 4211 users, my main computer has a standard layout with the control key on the far left of the keyboard. It's impossible to quickly adjust to the switched positions every time I use the computer. For heaven's sake don't make the same mistake again.

+ Very light and highly portable. Has everything you need to work with.

- Initially had problem getting it to connect on the wireless network initially but once that was sorted out (help on the internet using other pc!) no further trouble.
Lack of a cd drive can be annoying sometimes but a flash drive works just as well storing and transferring data

- POOR battery life, only a 3 cell one; I believe the MSI Wind (Advent 4211 is 'badged' one of these) ships with 6 cell battery for nearly double the mains free time. Now other manufacturers are producing 'netbooks' (less than 10" screen) that have better wi-fi (802.11n class) and/or built in 3G (just add sim).

+ Cheap, light, portable, surprisingly good screen, great photo back-up tool. I took it all around Morocco with me on a photo trip and it performed admirably. No laptop is good enough for critical photographic work in my opinion so I got this purely as a back up tool.

- Prohibitively poor battery life. I often have to carry the power pack with the laptop which negates the portability of the device.

+ I bought tthis for my sons xmas it's an excellent size to carry around safely in his bag to take to other peoples houses. Wireless internet connection allows him to connect anywhere that has wireless internet access. He absolutely loves it.
