Wireless and camera were not on by default - i bet the support guys got loads of calls about that. You needed to switch them on via the software switches on the keyboard fn keys.

Portable, very light (1KG) yet performs just as well as most desktops - i have office 2007 and Adobe CS3 running just fine on it. My own (vastly higher spec) desktop doesnt see much use any more! Decent size keyboard compared to other portables. Screen is very high quality. included installation of XP is quite clean, didnt feel the need to start it from scratch. Good value for money!
-
3 Cell battery gives a limited battery life, but 6 Cell is coming (fire at major battery factory affects everyone). Had a critical issue out of the box that would freeze the screen, but this was fixed promptly by a bios later posted by 'TheTechGuys'. Lacks a suitable case as far as i can tell. Fn & Ctrl keys are swapped around compared to a regular keyboard. Wouldnt use built-in speakers for extended periods as they arent high quality (snag some headphones or plug into an external set)

These are excellent machines. Screen size is the minimum to be really practical for people who want "serious" internet access on the move. Tried testing other brands with 8" screens but I would need to carry binoculars with me too! Performance is really good considering the size and spec'. I've now bought two of these ( XP Home) because I need to run specific Windows applications for VPN connectivity etc. As a stand alone I would guess that the *.nix version absolutely flies but alas didn't have that option.
-
The only negative, but understandable draw back is that battery life isn't brilliant, but, of course, for a unit as small and as compact as this the battery has to be quite slim, thus less capacity. On average a good 1½ hours though

This little PC is an absolutely top notch system. It truly beats the eee pc as it's got a vastly superior screen size, bigger disk, bigger screen and better CPU. I'm really impressed with mine. It's also extremely versatile and can run a number of operating systems lincluding XP, Linux and a popular it perhaps shouldn't!
-
The Advent 4211 doesn't include a case of any kind. The Del key on mine gets a little stuck if you're not careful. The battery life could be better.

A very good spec with a fairly big disk of 80GB & plenty of RAM 1GB
Great value for money.
A superb size as I bought it to use on the train during my commute to work.
It's a very good quality piece of kit.
-
It was a hassle to have to update the BOIS to resolve some quirks (such as it was over keen to switch itself off during power up)
A very minor issue is the processor (Intel Atom) is not very powerful as I have some music making software that can soon bring it to its knees. However, it's perfect for most applications like databases, spreadsheets, word processing or viewing videos.

Pretty speedy and responsive. Excellent screen, even at low brightness settings. Good keyboard and trackpad. Good Wi-Fi connection speed and reception. Powers all my bus-powered USB HDDs and DVD drives even when running on battery. Lightweight, and attractive styling. Great to have a hard drive to store loads of games, music and videos.
-
Needed to update bios to fix a few initial problems, but this was simple enough following TechGuys instructions page - not had any issues since. Speakers are fairly tinny-sounding. Doesn't come with a case/sleeve, but more are becoming available now. Battery life could be better, ranges between 1.5 -> 2 hours whilst web-browsing.

Compact, lightweight and much easier to carry around than a 15" laptop, but has much the same capabilities. The lack of a DVD/CD drive is not a major problem. Much cheaper than other notebook PCs.

The small screen size can be an irritation when using some programs. However, the one really bad point is the speakers. The sound quality is appalling. A cheap set of USB speakers will overcome this but detracts from the portability, which is its main advantage.

Size is just right. Keyboard is excellent for its size, with a good 'feel'.
Everything (the computer, bluetooth, wi-fi internet connections) worked perfectly, straight out of the box.
The screen display is, literally, brilliant. Sharp, and can be as bright as you will ever need.
The supplied software is basic but useful. THERE WAS NO RUBBISH! There were no 'trial versions' that needed uninstalling - this was a nice clean computer.
-
A couple of keyboard keys are in unexpected places.
Battery life is too short - about two hours. Spend another £50 on a 6 cell battery pack, which will give you well over four hours (plus another two from your original battery) and you will have something far more useful.

-
Appallingly unreliable in operation, screen goes blank frequently requiring restart (which is why I'll be taking this back under warranty - it even did it while I was completing this review which was finished on another computer!); wireless performance poor and weak compared to an Asus EeePC on the same wireless network, losing connection frequently and often causing wireless adapter to become unresponsive and causing complete system lockup; trackpad small and fiddly; battery performance poor (though this is forgivable at this price); although the chassis design is attractive, in use it feels cheapy and tacky so the lack of reliability comes as no great surprise

Basically a rebadged MSI Wind netbook - the one that has won so many awards. It really is a little gem. Unlike a lot of other netbooks, it's screen / keyboard / trackpad are just the right size to make daily use a joy - whilst still maintaining a small footprint.
I bought a refurbished unit, and to be honest you couldn't tell - it looks no different to a new unit!
All in all I would recommend the Advent 4211 to anyone wanting one of the best netbooks on the market!
-
Not something that bothers me, but the battery life is between 2-3 hours. This is the same for a lot of netbooks / laptops, so is not unusual. You can buy bigger batteries for the unit - which apparently give upwards of 8 hours!

Small, compact, stylish and very lightweight. The wireless card is excellent, better than my desktop and finding a connection is no problem. The 10.1" screen is the perfect size for this type of product and I certainly wouldn't go for the smaller 8.5". It seems quite robust too, accidently dropping off my desk at work didn't seem to harm it one bit. The netbook itself seems quick enough when browsing the net, I've had multiple tabs open and it seems to cope fine, the atom processor is able to handle quite a bit as is the 80 Gig hard drive. I've managed to shadow my desktop hard drive onto the netbook which includes games such as Football Manager and World of Warcraft and the netbook plays these with no problems. Having the svga port on the side means I can connect it to my monitor at home, my desketop is now virtually redundant! The keyboard seems well made and not as cramped as I thought it might be for typing. All in all a fantastic product with a great price tag.
-
The inbuilt speakers are quite terrible, I use earphones if needing to watch anything requiring sound, and the battery life is appauling, even though it says it has 1.5 hours of charge you're lucky if you get an hour.

Wonderfully portable, great little keyboard, good-sized hard drive and a generous amount of RAM memory, looks good, behaves beautifully. Ideal to take on trips, as well as to download photos to and view photos on when you're on vacation.
-
Would've given ten out of ten on both counts if the battery charge had lasted longer. Would like to see at least three hours of usage on a charge. Aside from that, no bad points.

fit for purpose. Great for just surfing internet. Good performance, light and mobile, use it every day! Plugs seemlessly into the tv for a good old family surf!!
-
Poor battery life, but can be easily upgraded to a 6 or 9 cell.

I am not a techie, so I think more instructions as to set up would be good, ie linking to the internet, enabling the camera (still not happening) Doing the recovery backup (details of where to find information when it wont work, as in my case)

Pretty much everything. The size of the device makes it easily portable (in almost any kind of bag). Despite it's size, it's powerful and of high enough specification to do anything except the most power hungry of applications. The keyboard is spot on, allowing full touch typing without compromise.
-
There are only two issues with the Advent 4211. Firstly the stock 3 cell 2200mAh battery just doesn't provide enough time away from a power socket (upgarde to a 6-cell and that's sorted). Secondly the cooling fan is cheap and prone to making a noise.... and it can be loud. Apparently a drop of machine (sewing machine for example) oil generally sorts this out.

It is a very light machine which I take to work/college with me often to work on my college projects. It has enough power to run multiple applications at the same time though without the mains plugged in it can get a bit slow.
The new bios allows you to overclock the CPU by upto 35% when plugged into the mains by pressing the power save combination of keys (fn +F10).
-
When using the microphone the other person can hear the hard drive spinning.
The inbuilt wifi card isn't linux friendly.
Speakers have weak bass.

Just the right size to be portable and usable.

It's automatically set to bluetooth mode and you need to press the Fn and F11 button to toggle it to wi-fi, the manual (which is given as a pdf rather than a printout) isn't very helpful for this, and I had to search on the internet (with another computer) to work out what to do.

Very portable, snazzy looking design and comes with a lot of built in features. Lots of advice available on the internet through various forums (msi wind) and overall a good package. Processor is faster then I expected also.
-
Battery life could be better and the screen is a little small if you're used to full size laptops, but portability easily makes up for this and 6 cell batteries are available.

Bought it for my wife and she is more than happy with it. We read the reports and were well aware of the limited battery life - but hey, we.ve plenty of power points in our house and I gather that hotels have power points these days. There was one review where some numpty complained it didn't have CD drive, shame the guy didn't do some research first.

Solid construction, seeing as the 4211 is basically made by MSI. The screen is bright & clear, and the size & weight are perfect for carrying around inconspicuously. The hardware is very easy to upgrade, and the parts are cheap and easy to get hold of. The processor and graphics chip are good enough to run any OS currently available. Perfect for light-to-medium use.
-
Battery could be better, but is necessary to keep the overall size down.
