Advent 4211 Reviews: Windows XP Home 10" Screen Laptop computer

+ So far the product performs well and is suited to my needs, chiefly word processing on the move and a digital photo album. I can't fault its performance.

- Not really an issue, but if it is going to have a built in web cam, a built in mike would have complimented it.

+ It is just as good as a more expensive laptop, the size is brilliant (not too small just perfect). I love this laptop!

- No disk drive - this causes LOTS of problems. Also the charging time is only 1.5 - 2 hours which I thought would be a problem - however it really really gets on my nerves.

+ I choose this product because of it's size ,weight and portability.I find it easy to use and it's advantage over other small laptops is it's processor,size of hard drive and that it runs Windows XP.I find it good for casual web surfing and chatting online though it is as capable as any laptop.The built in webcam is also a great bonus.Overrall an excellent purchase.

+ My husband and I bought this for our son's birthday and he loved it. The size is brilliant and it has enough facilities for my son (whom is 11 years old).

research deciding on the advent notebook & i would like to say that i now have a network of one
desktop,one laptop and one notebook.

- none at all really except a lot of other makes seem to be jumping on this bandwagon but they will have
to go some to beat this advent notebook

+ Small compact windows XP machine ideal for browsing web at home.

- Battery life can only be around 1hr-1.5hrs. had an issue with hidden SSID on my wireless - i.e. it has to be visible to use it and have not got to the bottom of this yet.

- KEEPS CONNECTING AND DISCONNECTING FROM THE INTERNET.

+ small, light, easy to carry in a bag. Looks good, easy to use.

- Poor battery life, under 2 hours. no CD drive, but then again, this is a very small laptop.

+ Its light and small which is the main attraction to it. Pretty fast considering.

- Screen resolution could be higher. You need to download alternative drivers for the trackpad if you are going to do a lot of typing.

+ Very small and lightweight. Speedy processor means not matter how many screens you've got open it doesnt slow. Would higly recommend for anyone looking for an internet laptop. I find it good for online gaming as the applications do not slow the computer even if palying several sites at once.

- On/off switch is very sensitive and if you press it for a second too long it starts up then shuts back down again! Screen is very small so can be hard to read some text. Sometimes when running off battery screen just suddenly goes blank when you're in the middle of something.

+ Excellent machine for ultra portable use. Just the right size to use on the train and just the right spec to run everything you need on the go. Light enough not to be a burden and sturdy enough to withstand the rigours of the daily commute. Plays movies and films with ease and has plenty of storage compared to other ultra portables. Above all the price has to be it's best selling point, excellent value for the spec.

- Tricky to point out anything bad but... Not brilliant if you have fat fingers and want to do a lot of typing but having said that the keyboard is by far the best on any ultra portable that I tried.

+ Would probably knock out a Swan if thrown sufficiently hard enough

+ It is a fully functional laptop, unlike some other small laptops, and it is really portable unlike some very heavy and large laptops.

- Wasn't perfect out of the box. Needed a firmware update to resolve issue where the laptop would often shut down 2 seconds after turning tit on. Wi-fi was very flaky or not working at all until new drivers for it was installed. No more problems after these things were done, but I feel that it should not have been necessary in the first place and would probably have put off a lot of casual users or less computer savvy people.

+ excellent value, neat size, good quality screen - provides everything needed from a leisure pc

- the pc kept turning off at the initial start up - we had to download a new version of Bios to solve the problem. If my partner hadn't been a techie, it would have been a real pain

- lack of dvd/cd drive for software installation. (option to buy suitable external drive would help)

+ Size. Lightweight (even the power supply). Good keyboard. Seems robust.

- Power up can be a bit hit and miss. (Lingering slightly too long on the button can turn off again!)

+ It's suprisingly fast, for instance it can happily time shift live TV from a DVBT stick.
The display is really clear and bright.
It actually seems eager to connect to absolutely anything via WiFi and bluetooth.
I cannot fault it's performance
It is also very cute.

- Battery life is significantly less than 2 hours.

+ Basically a rebadged MSI Wind netbook - the one that has won so many awards. It really is a little gem. Unlike a lot of other netbooks, it's screen / keyboard / trackpad are just the right size to make daily use a joy - whilst still maintaining a small footprint.
I bought a refurbished unit, and to be honest you couldn't tell - it looks no different to a new unit!
All in all I would recommend the Advent 4211 to anyone wanting one of the best netbooks on the market!

- Not something that bothers me, but the battery life is between 2-3 hours. This is the same for a lot of netbooks / laptops, so is not unusual. You can buy bigger batteries for the unit - which apparently give upwards of 8 hours!

+ Small, compact, stylish and very lightweight. The wireless card is excellent, better than my desktop and finding a connection is no problem. The 10.1" screen is the perfect size for this type of product and I certainly wouldn't go for the smaller 8.5". It seems quite robust too, accidently dropping off my desk at work didn't seem to harm it one bit. The netbook itself seems quick enough when browsing the net, I've had multiple tabs open and it seems to cope fine, the atom processor is able to handle quite a bit as is the 80 Gig hard drive. I've managed to shadow my desktop hard drive onto the netbook which includes games such as Football Manager and World of Warcraft and the netbook plays these with no problems. Having the svga port on the side means I can connect it to my monitor at home, my desketop is now virtually redundant! The keyboard seems well made and not as cramped as I thought it might be for typing. All in all a fantastic product with a great price tag.

- The inbuilt speakers are quite terrible, I use earphones if needing to watch anything requiring sound, and the battery life is appauling, even though it says it has 1.5 hours of charge you're lucky if you get an hour.

- To use it to play back dvd's on has to use an ext player ....which probably would require ext mains; this poses a portability problem.Mad

+ A little bit larger than the Asus EeePc which is an advantage. Windows XP runs perfectly and the screen and keyboard are just right. Excellent choice for a computer on the move.

- Adding a larger capacity battery is a must if you spend time away for a mains socket.

+ Small, fast and very ease to use, having XP on it.

- None yet, except the battery life isn't wonderful at a couple of hours

+ Wonderfully portable, great little keyboard, good-sized hard drive and a generous amount of RAM memory, looks good, behaves beautifully. Ideal to take on trips, as well as to download photos to and view photos on when you're on vacation.

- Would've given ten out of ten on both counts if the battery charge had lasted longer. Would like to see at least three hours of usage on a charge. Aside from that, no bad points.

+ Pretty much everything. The size of the device makes it easily portable (in almost any kind of bag). Despite it's size, it's powerful and of high enough specification to do anything except the most power hungry of applications. The keyboard is spot on, allowing full touch typing without compromise.

- There are only two issues with the Advent 4211. Firstly the stock 3 cell 2200mAh battery just doesn't provide enough time away from a power socket (upgarde to a 6-cell and that's sorted). Secondly the cooling fan is cheap and prone to making a noise.... and it can be loud. Apparently a drop of machine (sewing machine for example) oil generally sorts this out.

+ It is a very light machine which I take to work/college with me often to work on my college projects. It has enough power to run multiple applications at the same time though without the mains plugged in it can get a bit slow.
The new bios allows you to overclock the CPU by upto 35% when plugged into the mains by pressing the power save combination of keys (fn +F10).

- When using the microphone the other person can hear the hard drive spinning.
The inbuilt wifi card isn't linux friendly.
Speakers have weak bass.

+ Just the right size to be portable and usable.

- It's automatically set to bluetooth mode and you need to press the Fn and F11 button to toggle it to wi-fi, the manual (which is given as a pdf rather than a printout) isn't very helpful for this, and I had to search on the internet (with another computer) to work out what to do.

+ it is light and compact,allows me to browse the internet,listen to music and watch films.

+ Very portable, snazzy looking design and comes with a lot of built in features. Lots of advice available on the internet through various forums (msi wind) and overall a good package. Processor is faster then I expected also.

- Battery life could be better and the screen is a little small if you're used to full size laptops, but portability easily makes up for this and 6 cell batteries are available.

+ Bought it for my wife and she is more than happy with it. We read the reports and were well aware of the limited battery life - but hey, we.ve plenty of power points in our house and I gather that hotels have power points these days. There was one review where some numpty complained it didn't have CD drive, shame the guy didn't do some research first.

+ Solid construction, seeing as the 4211 is basically made by MSI. The screen is bright & clear, and the size & weight are perfect for carrying around inconspicuously. The hardware is very easy to upgrade, and the parts are cheap and easy to get hold of. The processor and graphics chip are good enough to run any OS currently available. Perfect for light-to-medium use.

- Battery could be better, but is necessary to keep the overall size down.

+ It near perfect for my needs - keys are fine - I work in bed with it - fits into my handbag

- No disc drive so had to download more software when I already own Microsoft Enterprise. Battery life is not great. Would have liked it other colours than black!

+ Intergrated camera is very good, processor is fast. Was bought for my husband to use offshore and he loves it, exactly what he needed.

- The touch mouse is a little hard to get used to and tends to be a bit over enthusiastic at times, clicking on things when your trying to scroll etc
