+ Got it for my daughter who specifically wanted pink so that was a big plus. In terms of functionality the size and weight are perfect, the keyboard is more usable than I expected and the screen is very clear. Battery life has not been a problem. I had my doubts about its usefulness but it does everything my daughter wants from a computer.

- Linplus operating system had a kernel panic after two hours of use for no apparent reason. Install disk would not work and neither would downloaded version. Installed ubuntu netbook edition and it has been fine ever since.

+ The hardware itself is pretty good and there are a few mods around to add the niggling little things that "would be nice". The "recovery" option is particularly good - it comes with a recovery disk, which is good if you have a USB DVD drive, but also allows you to make one on a USB stick if you don't.

- Linpus, it's a good choice for a beginner at linux, but not for an experienced linux user. The touchpad is also a little weird, due to the button placement - I went for an external mouse.

+ Linpus (Linux) quick to boot up and simple interface. Handy to carry around and in particular to take on holiday.

- Linpus (Linux) not friendly for outright beginners to master in modifying computer to suit personal tastes and install new or upgraded software. Better GUI for installing software and placing icons etc. could be thought of as a future update from ACER. Software drivers for bluetooth and 3G "dongles" should really be pre-installed!!! Wi-Fi cards pick up range limited compared to "full size" laptops I've experienced. 230V mains lead for power adaptor seems overly long and 19V end near the jack plug is often prone to bending double easily due to proximity of filter on the lead. This has lead to premature failure on other laptops I've had whereby the cores have broken due to excesive bending! Why not consider relocating the filter a few more CM's away from the 19V jack plug end and/ or reinforce/ splint the cable between the filter and the jack plug?

- Battery life is short (I knew this when I purchased it, checking into the feasibility of buying a 6 cell battery at a later date), and it's Linux, a problem if there's anything wrong with the software or this needs to be upgraded, and the user is not Linux aware (I, stupidly, thought I could work out how to use this). You really need to advise potential purchaser's that if they don't know how to use Linux, they shouldn't buy this product. Even if all they want to do is use the browser/email/documents, there's a problem if the browser doesn't work (google "firefox crashes" and you see what I mean, seems to be a common problem with Linux). I should have bought the Windows version.

- The use of the the solid state hard drive it has severley hurts its performance, especially if you had Windows XP installed. Look for the 120gb hdd version if you plan to have XP installed. I have the 16gb ssd version and the 120gb hdd version and the 120gb version is way faster although you do not get the built in sim slot for mobile broadband. sunil, bracknell

+ small, portable good range of applications make it suitable for a wide variety of computing needs. Does what it says on the tin out of the box if you dont want to change a thing.

- Needs detailed knowledge of Linux to customise or install new software. Not for the faint hearted as no two apps are configured in the same way and no effective GUI that harmonises installing or removing apps. You could eaily lose weeks from your life.

Laptop Buyers' Guide

Manufacturer's Description

Acer redefines mobile connectivity with Aspire one, the revolutionary netbook packed with fun and powerful computing features in a diminutive 8.9" form factor.

SmartStart in just 15 seconds

From the moment you switch it on, the Aspire one is ready to go in just 15 seconds (with Linpus™ Linux® Lite version). That’s what we call a smart start. Once on, the interface is pure simplicity: a home screen divided into four areas that contain all the applications you need to stay connected, work, play, and organize your life on the road. And as your Aspire one is as unique as the way you use it, you can customize the applications on the home screen so that it’s just right for you. Fast, simple and indescribably chic. That’s your new life with the Aspire one.

Vision: One idea

How big is perfection? How small is ideal?
The Aspire one has an 8.9” CrystalBrite LED backlit LCD with 1024×600 resolution and an integrated CrystalEye™ webcam that offers just the right balance between easy-toread clarity and easy-to-use functionality. You could almost call it the perfect fit.

Power: One energy

Power comes in many forms. Often the smallest is the most powerful. The Aspire one comes with the Intel® Atom™ processor, built with the world’s smallest transistors and designed specifically for low power consumption while delivering the power and performance you need for full online freedom.

Style: One look

Your style is your signature. It is your identity, your personality your calling card. Your style tells the world who you are and how you live your life, both online and off. It is all you need to be yourself. Your style comes in different colours, each with its own individual character. So does the Aspire one.

Feeling: One freedom

Smaller than an average diary and weighing less than 1 kilo (models with NAND flash module), the Aspire one puts freedom in the palm of your hands. Freedom to use WiFi, WiMAX and 3G Networks* to explore new ways to connect, communicate and interact with the world you care about. Freedom to go beyond ultra-mobility. Freedom to be yourself anywhere you want to.
(* depending on network readiness)

Experience: One control

The Aspire one has one of the most intuitive interfaces out there that takes just seconds to learn, and smart software that keeps you productive, entertained and connected all the time. Why? Because your online world is a very personal place that changes every time you connect but remains familiar because it’s a world you create. One interface, a whole world to discover. Why do it any differently?
