This computer looks great - sleek red on the ouside, shiny black on the inside. It's set up and ready to use straight out of the box but it's also easy enough to change the settings when you want to. It's certainly fast enough to do everything I need from a laptop and it copes well with multiple programs running at the same time.
-
It tends to overestimate the amount of battery life left and at the end of the battery life to turn off with very little warning - it may be that I just haven't found the setting yet that says 'warn me when the battery is nearly flat', but I'd expect that to be the default. Also the battery seems a bit loose. Twice now I've picked up the laptop only to find that the battery has fallen out of the back!

It does exactly what it should, great screen clarity, good wi-fi ability, smooth keyboard, a good little package.
Short battery life but this isn't a problem to me as i use it plugged in.
-
The mouse is very sensitive and slightly unpredictable but this seems common to all laptops.
If you want to play graphical games then buy a different laptop.

Great design, good looking and light for a 15.4" laptop. Ports are well positioned. Easy to use. Cheap.

Poor battery life with the 4 cell, better to go for 6 or 9 cell option to increase performance. Nice looking screen but is glossy and can reflect light unlike Dell standard screen. Touchpad mouse can have a mind of it's own

Good all round performance and well respected brand name for a reasonable price. Liked the fact it was 2GB RAM which is minimum for Vista. All other machines in or near price range came with 1GB and you had to buy and fix extra.

It has excellent speed and more than enough RAM and hard disk memory for my needs. It has 3 USB ports, and SD card reader and is wireless enabled. These are all points that make it excellent in my eyes. I like the touch pad as it is not too sensitive and I like the action of the mouse buttons - they don't click.
-
The screen has no latch and is only held shut by the hinges. Whilst fine while new I suspect the lid could become floppy with age. I don't like the 'widescreen' format, it distorts both still pics and videos. If I'd known it was widescreen before I bought it, I probably wouldn't havet. I would have gone for a non-widescreen version. The power socket is too close to one of the USB ports and the plug fouls any flash drives that you plug into the port.

Battery power sufficient but not great.
Worst thing is that the power lead is right next to double USB socket and I'm unable to plug in certain memory sticks when computer is plugged in to the mains as there is no space for them.

Looks good. Basic design seems OK. Good price for specification. Good screen, keyboard etc. Very good Dell support.
-
Battery life "fair" at best compared to my old ACER Aspire 5000. My new system crashed after loading standard software (Zonealarm, Reg Mechanic, Spyware Doctor, AVG anti-virus, Acronis Privacy Expert). Dell were excellent - talked me through resetting to factory status but this,of course, meant reformatting drive and reinstalling software. All very time-consuming. The Vista OS is very resource-greedy compared with Windows XP. I get frequent unresponsive programmes (eg. Google Earth, Internet Explorer) despite twice the RAM of my trouble-free ACER Aspire 5000. Till I find how to get rid of the "useful new services" in Vista, I guess this will continue to bug me! I am seriously considering reformatting hard drive and loading my old Aspire Recovery disks. In short, I wish I had got a laptop with Windows XP, or spent more on a laptop with Vista but more RAM. I build my own desktop computers (amateur - self-taught) and one rather expects to have more problems than with a professionally designed unit - sadly not the case. I have little doubt Vista is the problem.
