Tim, Camberley , “30 years experience photographing”

Score 10.0/10

+ A cracking lens. Really impressed with the low distortion for such a wide angle, and quite a fast lens too

- Not a wide zoom range, but you are normally working close anyway, so you can usually move to compensate - it's good practice for these really wide lenses to change your viewpoint as it can have a big effect on the final image.

Score 9.0/10

+ Very sharp with excellent resolving power and good contrast (even at full aperture). Colour balance very neutral and does not need any hue correction. Delivers nicely saturated colours. Relatively low distortion for a super-wide (although there is a little barrel distortion especially at 11mm). No detectable visible Chromatic Aberration (CA) on normal contrast scenes. No visible light fall-off at edges or corner vignetting - excellent performance. Good resistance to flare.
Overall it's really as good as a very good prime lens ought to be at all focal lengths and especially good at the middle of it's range. It looks likely to be a winner for landscapes.
Also as a very useful bonus at 16mm it should also be very usable on full-frame without edge fall-off or corner vignetting.

- Extreme corners can suffer from purple or blue peripheral fringing (PF) if dark edges (such as twigs of trees) are contrasted with a bright over-exposed sky. Easy to fix with post-processing these days. Not seen at all on normal contrast shots.
Ghosting - only moderately resistant to ghosting so not ideal for into-the-sun type shots but usable with the sun out of shot with care. Use of the petal lens hood is definitely recommended.
Not quite as sharp at 11mm or 16mm (although still very good) - best at around 13 to 14mm (but this is splitting hairs).
The petal type lens hood when reversed for carrying results in the lens becoming rather buky - make sure your camera bag is big enough! Also - be aware this lens is quite heavy!

+ An excellently made, internal focus lens that takes pin-sharp highly contrasty pictures. You can switch between manual and AF by sliding a ring up or down, and the AF works well (no unnecessary focus searching that I've seen in some other lenses).

- The 11-16 range is a little small, even for a wide angle lens, requiring you to change lenses more frequently than you would perhaps with a 12-24 lens. Also, some people might find it quite heavy, but I guess you have to accept this with this level of build quality.

Excellent for landscapes.

- Need a separate flash gun.
Onboard flash throws a large shadow over the bottom of the picture as lens is in the way.

+ This is a bit of a specialty lens, but does exactly what it is supposed to do. In my opinion the build and image quality is very good. I would recommend this, if you need a ultra wide lens for your Nikon.

- No real negatives, except for the lens cap which I think is lousy. It is very had to get a grip of the cap with two fingers to re insert it, especially when you have the hood attached to the lens.

+ Very sharp, nice colour rendition. Looks like a quality product, and is good value compared to competition, even takign into account its issues.

- If I really try, I can show that the lens is slightly decentered, and it is sometimes soft at one edge of the frame. In real photography I have never seen it. I have read that a few people have seen this issue. More seriously, the lens over exposes as the focal length gets shorter. At the widest end I have to compensate by -0.5 of a stop, which is a bit of a pain. It wouldn't be so bad if it were the same at all focal lengths, but it changes as you zoom.

+ This is a fine lens. I have also owned the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 and I very much prefer the Tokina. We can talk about sharpness (the Tokina is sharper) and colour (the Sigma gives warm yellow tones; the Tokina gives is more neutral, much like a Nikkor lens). That is interesting, but what is really important is this: the Tokina lens just makes better images. Build quality is hight and, because it's f2.8, you also get a bright viewfinder.

Score 10.0/10

+ The good points: GREAT quality - visibly better than the Nikon. However, this is because Tokina have sacrificed the zoom range to maintain great image quality and low distortion. In fact, most of the photos I took I could hardly notice the distortion. Simplyelectronics were surprisingly cheaper than everyone else.

- Only one - the limited Zoom range. If it went to 24, then I wouldn't have to swap lenses often and this would be my walk about lens... in hindsight, I may have got the 12-24 because the 1mm would be hardly noticable... however, I cannot vouch for the image quality of the 12-24 and as Image quality is at the forefront of my priorities, this lens has been a great and worthwhile purchase.

Score 10.0/10

+ This lens is not only on a par with its much more expensive Nikkor equivalent, it's actually better optically, and at least as well-constructed. No contest - it's the best Nikon-fit superwide zoom at ANY price.

- Would have been even better with built-in A/F, but in practical terms the depth of field with a lens this wide means that you barely need to focus at all. And the push-pull manual focus switch is simplicity itself.

+ Does exactly what it is supposed to - a fabulous wide-angle, wide aperture lens. Solidly built, intuitive controls and an excellent price.

- The finish feels a little plasticy, but in reality is quite hardwearing. 11-16mm doesn't give you a great range, but that's also not the point of this lens.

+ Exceptionally sharp. Nice and fast at f/2.8. A very well built lens - slightly heavy but reassuringly so. Great value compared to the equivalent Nikon 10-24.

- I have noticed some flare on occasion, but that's to be expected with a lens this wide. At the time the sun was directly in the frame but diffused by clouds, so I was surprised to see it.

+ Marvelous value for money. I was very hesitant to buy initially as it is the first "non-Nikon" Lens I've used on my cameras. However, I was very impressed with both the optical and build quality. I've yet to get use to the push pull switching between manual and automatic focus but this is actually very handy, I'm just so used to the conventional sliders. I'd recommend this lens highly. Distortion is pretty much as you would expect from a lens classified as bordering on "ultra-wide" and is quite acceptable. Image is crisp, bright, and clear although better stopped down a little. All in all tremendous value for money.

- Nothing really to mention so far. . Time will tell....

+ Probably the best price/performance super-wide on the market. Good, (but not outstanding) build quality. A clever manual/auto focus selector. Reported to be as sharp and as good as the Nikkor - which I belive could be the case, according to my test shots.

- Well, it's not a Nikkor, so it will probablu depreciate a little faster. It doesn't have a focus motor, which may make it a little less sought after as well (No can do with D3000, D5000, D40 and D60).
