Android Marketplace provides lots of cool free apps and games to extend the phone. Excellent for people who like to tinker.
Email alerts almost give the impression of 'push' email systems like the Blackberry.
Smooth, easy to use interface.
Keyboard makes txting and emailing much easier, without the need for predictive text. Although it makes one-handed txting very awkward.
-
Battery like is pathetic. Not even a full day's active use without a recharge.
Camera is very average, and shocking in low light.
Speakerphone is tinny.
Ringer is easily muffled (and so, very quiet) if the phone is laid face up on a soft surface (e.g. sofa).
The G1 white has a white backlight behind the keys, making the letter markings hard to see in certain light situations.

Score 6.0/10+ great all in one device. I'm also really enjoying some of the geeky apps! this device will come into its own when I'm away from my broadband connection for work, as it means I can stay in contact with my social circle.
- Gmail has a bad habit of not notifying me of new emails & when I call up the app, it is open on an email I've already read. The touch screen doesn't always select what I've intended.

Score 9.0/10+ This phone is exactly what is advertised - a fun take on the smart phone with useful internet browsing and free application support. The touch screen is easy to use and means using the phone for calling, as an organiser or for browsing are all quick and straightforward.
- The battery life on the phone seems poor at first, after calibrating (full charge then full power down) 4 or 5 times it improves, but the GPS, Sync, bluetooth and 3G features should ALL be turned off till needed for maximum life.

Score 8.0/10+ A lot of good functions packed in to an excellent design. Keyboard works very well. Excellent for texting.
- Takes a while to get to grips with it, but that's possibly because it has a lot more in it than simpler phones. Thin plastic back feels flimsy and is difficult to remove. Too much web use uses the power very rapidly.

- Although I understand that using these fantastic features does burn the battery a bit, I would like to go for a few days without charging it. Currently I have to charge every night when I get home. Thankfully there are some apps on the Market Place which help with conserving energy.

Score 9.0/10+ Excellent touch screen - very clear and sharp. Qwerty keyboard is good to use (once you get used to it, rather than a numeric key pad). Android market for apps is worth its weight in gold...
- Battery life!!!!!!! If use solely as a phone it isn't too bad but when you use the extra features like web browsing, email, music etc it can eat through it in a very short time.
purchased 08 Feb 2009

Score 8.0/10+ Navigation is intuitive and the dropdown menu for emails and messages is excellent. The Android market place is brilliant and the fact that the majority of the apps are free gives it a massive plus point over the iPhone.
- Two basic things missing - flash for the camera (doesn't need a xenon flash, a LED would have done), and a radio tuner. So much excellent technology has been incorporated that it seems like an oversight to leave these out, especially the flash.

Score 10.0/10+ Great phone, brilliantly designed. Simple to use once you become familiar with its features.. Brilliant for internet usage (especially facebook) and shows web pages as though you are using a pc. You can download additonal applications, so phone is constanly updated.

Kate, Leeds , “Not good with technology!”
Score 9.0/10+ The applications that can be added to this phone from the marketplace are great! You can get some really good ones and the developers take on board feedback and improve them. The screen on this phone is very large so you can actually watch videos on it if you want to. The touch screen is very responsive. It has an inbuild gyroscope that means when you play some games you just need to tilt the phone in the direction you want. This is very sensitive and adds loads to the types of games you can play on the G1. Its very easy to operate once you get used to it. It can store alot of files. Easy to browse the internet!!
-
It has shut down unexpectedly a few times half way through use. I dont know if this is a fault on mine or them all, but its quite annoying! Not so bad that it would put me off getting one. Should be 'word' available to download so it can be used as a word processing device if you want. At the moment only 'notebook' is available which isnt great for compatability with other devices.
The camera isnt great: It doesnt have a flash so you cant take very good pictures if the lights not great. You would have thought the pictures would be better quality on this phone.

Creating appointments in the calendar is less straightforward than it should be, seems to be showy rather than useful
Can't find a way to install applications to SD card, which is annoying given the phone's very limited internal memory
Overly restrictive in the shell
'Agenda' view on the calendar only shows the current month, You can scroll through the days, and it's about ideal for me, but you can't get past the end of the current month.
In Agenda view, days with no appointments just don't exist.
'Enter' sends a text message. I'm used to being able to stick linebreaks in my texts.
The web browser doesn't scale sites particularly well. It has a pretty neat magnifying glass-like feature which is clumsy to get to, though
Can't find a 'send mail in plain text' option on either mail client, also threading doesn't work.

It looks very good and the web connection is very fast and the screen image is the best of any previous mobiles, I was very impressed with the sound quality of the sound when listening to music.
I like the wide choice variety on the mobile and the different applications that are available.
- I would prefer if the whole length of the phone slid up and not just three quarters of this, I find this awkward when typing emails. The battery life is not very good, I do not consider myself to be a heavy user of the phone and yet my battery does not last a couple of days.

Score 9.0/10+ The amount of applications and diversity of them mean that you are unlikely to say, "I couldn't find an app to do <something>". The integration with the online experience is really well done with synchronisation to GMail, Google Calendar and your contacts done in the background. The phone itself is a little unusual in the design but it works well for what it is with an on-screen keyboard (portrait or landscape) as well as the physical QWERTY keypad to use.
- One very obvious bad point, battery life. For such a feature packed phone it is to be expected but some reports are more than a little flawed. After first getting mine I had issues with the battery and it was only after a few full recharge and discharge cycles that it fully calibrated properly. Before calibration - 12 hours meant <50% battery. After calibration - 12 hours meant about <90% sometimes still over 90%. Both times with light to medium use with 3G on, WiFi off, Bluetooth off and location via network. Anyway, it isn't as bad as reported but it is pretty poor. There are extra capacity batteries available though. Another thing to note is the touch-screen can be a little unresponsive near the outer edges, sometimes requiring an extra prod to find the spot you need to hit. That's where the trackball comes in handy.

Score 8.0/10+ Best web-browser on any phone I've used. YouTube app is very cool.
- Camera is nowhere near good enough for a phone of this quality. Flash needed for browser.

Score 10.0/10+ This is the best phone I have ever owned, the design, the input methods, everything just wonderful. I live my life through google products, (googlemail, calendar etc) and this phone integrates seamlessly will them. Fantastic!
- Camera is not great, however if it was better then the battery would have to be the design may change to accommodate etc. Works brilliantly with still life in a light environment.
