Score 10.0/10+ Excellent sound quality, and good connectivity (4 HDMI inputs). Self set-up function works well. Bravia Theatre lik is also beneficial for Sony owners.
- Doesn't route all inputs to the HDMI output (i.e. if you feed it a component signal, you need to use the component out to the TV).

Score 9.0/10+ Very easy to set up and use. Handles the new HD soundtracks Dolby TruHD, DTS HD MA, and Linear PCM which bring films to life in a way I did not think possible. Has 4 HDMI inputs which carry both sound and vision meaning you don't have a mass of different connections into your screen. It also has all the other connections, composite etc should you need them.
- The instruction manual leaves a bit to be desired. It uses bullet points with little notes at the end rather than just explaining the points in paragraphs. In my case I was upgrading my system, so had set up a receiver before. A complete beginner may have had problems.

Score 10.0/10+ I'm really happy with this receiver. It has clean lines and is quite good looking, if a little bulky. Setting it up was doddle and the sound is produces is fantastic, whether listening to CD's or watching a movie on DVD. Can't wait to get my Blu-ray player to hear how what an uncompressed soundtrack will be like! It has been optimised to work with all other Sony products (well at least the one's I have!) It detected my TV and DVD player, connected via HDMI and they could be managed through this device's remote control. The remote can also be programmed for use with other manufacturer's devices, but I've not tried this yet, though the process is documented in the manual. In short a great 7.1 digital receiver. Fantastic sound at a great price.
- At this price point there is little to complain about. Mild criticisms would be the case is on the bulky side and is also a little flimsy. The remote is also a little on the large size, but I can't see how it could have been smaller considering the number of devices it has the potential to control.

- lack of HDMI upscaling from analogue signals is a major downer, especially as I now have a Nintendo Wii. Just means having analgoue cables going to the TV as well as HDMI, but aside from that I can't see any problem with it.

The sound is awesome and links seamlessly between my blueray and projector.
The price is also unbelievable for this amount of power, quality of sound, and stylish looks. I must admit when I read reviews praising a product I can be a little sceptic, but they were totally unfounded. Whatever you’ve read, believe it. I am happy to have found a complete solution within a great price range.

Score 6.0/10+ This is excellent Value and quality is good, the range of functions esp with True HD surround sound which is good but needs Blu Ray player to match 7.1channel set up. Mic Auto cal is great and all possible connections available.
- USA SAT radio functions no disclaimer for UK DAB. The HDMI SWITCHING is not fully used due to my home set up which needs to be more flexible. Most HDTVs have 3 or 4 HMDI o/p which can accept all separate feeds but sound transfer back to receiver is a problem. The Sky HD sound needs to be fed separately to a/n users if using multi screens.

Score 9.0/10+ Pretty easy to set up and use. Offers HD sound decoding at a great price.
- Don't really have any complaints...the instruction booklet isn't the easiest to read, but its straightforward enough that you won't really care.

Expert reviews for Sony STR-DG820
TechRadar expert review
Sony's STRDG820 is very, very easy to set up. By the time you have untangled a rival's mic cable the Sony will be up and running and have you half way through Resistance: Fall of Man, searching for Chimera to beat up with your burgeoning arsenal of weaponry. From box to pressing Start, the STR-DG820 is sub one-minute and the automatic test tones, being musical rather than white noise, are rather easy on the ear.Easy operation Okay, it's not exactly bristling with features or analogue connectivity, no S-video for example, but four-in, one-out HDMI connectivity leads the pack in numbers …
