+ Good price for a Sony product. Ok to set up. Digital picture was very good.

- Noise, the first film I watched, all I could hear during quiet dialogue was the fan motor (I presume), so would not have been able to listen to quiet cd's such as relaxation or classical, which then meant I was listening for it, and although sensitive to noise, this really was unacceptable by anyone's standards.

+ The picture and sound are excellent. The design is good to. It sits very nicely on the chest of draws and is not obtrusive.

- The manual is difficult to understand. I am having difficulty getting the hard drive to record.

The HXD890 shares the same firmware and features found on its 250GB counterpart, the HXD995, and all Pioneer's latest HDD/DVD decks, but you're getting the technology at a much lower price, which is a real coup considering its astonishing amount of features. Identical to the HXD995, apart from its smaller hard disk and the lack of a conditional access module slot for pay TV services, the HXD890 is only about ¬£20 cheaper than the 995.
