+ Fantastic picture. Truly the best image I have seen. Blu-Ray especially jump out at you.

- My TV only lasted four days before it went up in a puff of smoke. Third Sony TV I have omned and unfortunately the third that has prematurely failed on me...Maybe Sony need to review their quality control.

+ Great looking TV with excellent picture quality. A little on the expensive side but having spent some considerable time researching, reading reviews and noting other peoples comments I believe I have made the right choice in this competitive market. The picture quality of LCD's has been unfavourably compared with the old Cathode Ray Tubes in the technical press but I was impressed with the picture quality of the Sony compared with my old Toshiba 36 inch TV which I also thought as excellent. I am currently using the TV with the "out of the box" settings as I see no reason to tinker with these for the time being. For anyone looking for a 40 inch LCD TV this one should definitely be on your (very) short list.

- I have only had this TV for a few weeks and have yet to find anything negative to say about it.

+ LOTS OF DIFFERENT SETTINGS, BUT STILL EASY TO SET UP AND OPERATE.

- HAS TO BE LEFT ON STANDBY TO UPDATE TV GUIDE: WOULD BE BETTER IF UPDATED AT EVERY SWITCH-ON.

+ I could not believe the picture quality. Blue ray DVD and HD picture is like looking out of a window it is so clear.
My wife was sceptical about spending the extra for a Sony TV when there are cheaper modules on the market, but in this case you certainly get what you pay for.

- When using power save it can be slow to start, but that is an option.

+ Good picture in standard definition format most of the time. It certainly doesnt distract from viewing pleasure. Assume it will be great in HD.
Im happy with the quality of picture and do not feel the need to go to HD

- Football not good in Standard definition when in distance view . close ups are ok. All other sports are fine. Sound quality is OK and again it doesnt distract from viewing pleasure . Add on speakers Im sure would change that if that was your thing

+ 100Hz feature works brilliantly. I also bought a Samsung Series 7 LED TV and the 100Hz feature is not as smooth as the Sony. High quality construction with plenty of ports. PS3/Blue Ray is fantastic!

- Sound isnt great for movies but fine for normal TV viewing.
USB only plays certain formats of video clips, i downloaded some full HD clips from the internet to test the picture quality but the TV deosnt recognise them. Same clips play fine on the Samsung Series 7 LED TV

+ One of the best pictures I have seen on a LCD TV.
Blacks very dark.
Next to no image lag or ghosting.

- Small buzz from TV which is noticeable when it is quiet at low volume levels.
Video plus guide need updating nightly - TV left on standby overnight.
Viewing angle slightly less than that of my old flat seen CRT

+ Nice understated design. Easy setup. Lovely menu layout and remote control. Loads of connections. Great SD picture. No colour banding, very little picture noise.

- Does not automatically recognise non HD equipment, you have to manually select different feeds through remote. Contrast is lost if not watching head on.

+ Very happy with the Sony T.V, was worried that it was going to be too big but the 40" screen looks just right in my lounge. Looks very modern and the picture is superb, was thinking about getting High Def on Sky but not sure you need it with this T.V as picture quality is excellent whilst watching movies and sport. Really easy to set up and no teething problems. Well worth spending the extra money.

- The only bad point is that the pre-programmed modes i.e sports, cinema etc dont do the T.V justice it is best to have a play around to set the viewing and sound modes up yourself to get the best from the picture and sound.

+ Being 100HZ SonyKDL40W5500 has excellent picture quality if viewed from distance.

- Bit disappointed that the picture quality is not so good when sitting near to television, most people do not have vast lounges.
The stand should have couple of drilled holes in the back so that TV can be be anchored to stand or solid object, so that TV does not fall flat on its face when pulled by a child.

Expert reviews for Sony Bravia KDL-40W5500

TechRadar expert review

Sony's KDL-40W5500 40 inch LCD TV may be a standard LCD ‚Äì neither super-thin nor sporting LED backlighting ‚Äì but it delivers generally fine AV at an appealing price point, and throws in some tasty features, too. It doesn't take a genius to work out it'll probably sell like hot cakes. Image quality with both hi-and standard-def is impressive. Black levels are sufficiently deep and dark, and contrast levels are extraordinary ‚Äì we measured CR at 115,456:1. Of course, should you pull some stupendously thick curtains, turn out all the lights and play a shadow-filled game like Infamous…

TV Buyers Guide

Manufacturer's Description

A BRAVIA LCD TV is no ordinary television. Design is sleeker, pictures are brighter, details clearer. All BRAVIA televisions are HD Ready as a minimum, with up to 4 HDMI connections, and come with an integrated digital tuner so there is no need for a set-top box to view Freeview TV and radio channels. Most of the BRAVIA LCD TVs feature BRAVIA Sync technology, it takes just one button to turn on your entire Sony home entertainment system, while XrossMediaBar helps you navigate your TV easily with its best-in-class menu screen. After all advanced technology should simply mean technology that does more for you.

The BRAVIA W5500 has all the Sony technology you need to experience a new level of entertainment. BRAVIA ENGINE 3 digital processing delivers a depth, richness and clarity that will take your breath away. Motionflow 100Hz technology keeps fast-moving sports and action crisp and clear. You can connect it to your home network using DLNA and enjoy music, video and pictures from other compatible devices on your TV. Plus you can use the AppliCast™ feature to check on-screen RSS feeds of news and other information while you’re watching your favourite programmes.

Motionflow 100Hz for super-smooth,
ultra-realistic sport and action scenes

Motionflow 100Hz lets you see fast-moving sports and action scenes like never before by unlocking the amazing detail they contain. This blur reduction technology produces super-smooth, ultra-realistic viewing by doubling the conventional number of frames in a sequence. After every frame it creates an additional unique frame before the next one, based on key factors in the preceding and following images. While similar technologies simply duplicate frames, Motionflow 100Hz intelligently applies information to make movement appear even smoother.

The unique technology of BRAVIA ENGINE 3
optimises the quality of every single scene

An LCD television creates pictures by switching millions of pixels on and off. In the W5500 this process is controlled by the BRAVIA ENGINE 3, the latest version of Sony’s advanced digital processing technology. Using a collection of unique Sony algorithms it applies a digital perfecting process to reduce noise and produce cleaner images, higher contrast and smoother motion sequences, resulting in enhanced overall performance regardless of source.

Specifically, it analyses each individual scene, controlling the peak brightness level to generate advanced colour and brightness, and optimising the noise level. It also detects and adjusts the overall colour distribution of each frame and smoothes diagonal lines of pixels in fast-moving pictures to prevent jagged edges and bleeding colours.

In short, it delivers exceptional performance in every single scene.

The BRAVIA W5500 means you can finally create an easy-to-use home network that lets you share music, video and pictures from around the house on your TV. As part of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), Sony has adopted a universal standard for connectivity that enables your electronic devices, regardless of brand, to ‘talk’ to one another. So now it’s easy to move files between your TV, PC, printer, music player, phone, camera and more, wherever they are in the home. By integrating your TV into a home network, either wirelessly or via a cable, you can use your BRAVIA remote to find photos on the DLNA-enabled laptop in your bedroom and call them up to your living room TV screen. If you want hard copies, just send them to print on the colour printer in your spare room.

As well as BRAVIA TVs, Sony offers a range of DLNA Certified™ devices such as VAIO notebooks, the Sony Ericsson mobile phone, the PLAYSTATION®3 and the GigaJuke hard-disc drive music system.
