- Unit has to be switched off when booting up computer to avoid freezing. Cannot find any facility in the BIOS to switch off this unit to avoid this happening.

I have previously bought a SeaGate 500G, almost the same product, and was extremely happy with it.
And I say almost the same because the first one I bought in a store, where I could speak to the attendant and get every little detail of information. This time I checked and re checked, the product seemed to be the same...only we have Macs and, though after a bit of wrestling and a while googling and talking to people in forums, we got it to work with the Mac.
The first one we bought worked straight away with Mac...not this one, but the important thing is that it worked, after a couple of days of reading forums and chatting to people who helped, I got it to work.
The design is beautiful, hardl;y takes any space and is nice to look at, performs great, though a bit noisy at times.
I would recommend SeaGate but make yourself sure to get one the company gives compatibility and not where they tell you you have to go to the online directions to get it to work with Mac....you'll spend a bit of time trying to get this to work.
Other than that, all is fine at the moment. - Bad points:
