- Good points:
-
Smart TV with the LoveFilm and BBCi Player plugins - works very well, playing movies over the internet with ease. connects to pretty much anything and just works.
Image quality is good, although with this size tv you notice quickly if the source material isn't up to scratch. Sound is great.
Freeview and FreeSat/Sat tuners
- Bad points:
-
Panel isn't 100% black if you care about that (when the TV is on, a "black" screen is more like a black curtain with strong lights behind it)
Cable tidy attached to the back is a bit flimsy considering the weight of modern cabling (couple of HMDI, network, etc...)

Although this is not the latest model, its specification is very good and is priced at a substantial discount compared to the replacement model. The 3D facility is stunning. A good start at converged TV/Internet technology.
Initial setup is painless.
You get a lot of TV and facilities for your money. - Bad points:

Samsung do their best to frustrate a potential buyer with their documentation or rather the lack of it.
Documentation is VERY poor. There is a very thin printed manual that focuses on connections and Samsungs e-manual. Samsung's own e-manual is far too generic: it's full of "if available" comments and is silent on many points of functionality. So it's very difficult to find out about the TVs functionality....don't expect shops to know either. The manual for the 3D glasses is thicker than the manual for this smart TV! Samsung should provide a specific manual for this TV (printed or PDF) so that you can fully understand its complicated functionality....preferably before you buy!
The Personal Video Recorder (PVR) functionality is disappointingly clunky and basic. It just feels like it was added as very much an afterthought. It works BUT not as a consumer would want it: more like how an engineer decided he could make it work. No slow-motion or frame-by-frame play. Information on how it works is entirely missing (even from Samsung themselves). eg you need to tell it that you want to use timeshift before you can use it. Not sure why it wouldn't just buffer (say) a rolling 1 hour of programme just in case you want to use it or rewind a few minutes….as other Freeview recorders do.
If you offer the use on an external hard drive for PVR functionality, does the USB have sufficient power to support a USB hard drive or does it require a USB drive with an external power supply? (the answer in practice is that it DOESN’T require the USB hard drive to have external power supply…..some TVs do need this….but it isn’t documented).
When your external hard drive (PVR) is full, does the Samsung system intelligently overwrite the oldest programmes recorded or does it simply NOT record future products or does it give you some form of warning that the disk is nearly full? I have no idea…..and neither does Samsung’s documentation.
So if Samsung expect to you to dangle a USB hard drive at the back of the TV for this PVR functionality, why is there no fixing mechanism for such a hard drive? Eg even a Velcro strap would help. Better yet why not offer a laptop SATA hard drive interface for the (customers) hard drive to simply slot into?
If you have selected Timeshift and then select the programme guide you lose the buffered (saved) programme…even if you go back to the same channel.
I would suggest someone at Samsung takes a long look at even a circa year 2000 (UK) Thompson Tivo if they want to understand great PVR functionality and consumer interface.
Again on functionality: there is a built-in Freeview HD and Freesat HD BUT if you record from Freeview you can't simultaneously view/access the Freesat channels. As far as I can see there was no way to tell in advance whether this limitation existed. It might reasonably be assumed that you can record Freeview and simultaneously watch a Freesat channel (or vice versa) but you can’t: the two tuners are evidently not completely independent.
If I'm being super critical, the outer frame mitre joints are much inferior to the later models. If you view both models side by side, the difference is striking. However, once you get it home you won't notice it. Just odd!
Lots of little functional niggles that could/should have been better thought out.
Notwithstanding all the above, I am still VERY pleased with this TV. The picture quality is excellent.
Would I recommend this TV? YES definitely.
Documentation: 3/10 Awful
