+ Slim looking visual appearance is very pleasing. Picture quality/clarity is excellent. Rotate able stand is highly useable. The advantage of being LCD rather then plasma is highly advantageous namely half the power consumption (lower bills) and less heat being generated. There is lot of added features with this particular 8 series model. There is limited internet facility, being able to play media straight from USB or straight from your desk top/laptop pc is highly advantageous.
You can connect to the internet ether by ethernet or by using wireless usb dongle.

- Sound quality is poor without proper surround equipment.
Screen seems to act lot of dust, when compared to old CRT television, you are for ever more cleaning the screen.
Lacks full internet capability – hopefully this may be available in the near future.
Wireless capability requires expensive special Samsung wireless dongle.

+ Really impressed with the Samsung, I spent a great deal of time searching different manufacturers of LCD & Plasma TV's,and the LCD that really stood out from the croud was with the Samsung 8 series LE40A856 40", time well spent.
The design, slimness, & picture quality are top notch.
Set up was a breeze.

- Can't find any.

+ The design is superb and the set looks very impressive even when it is switched off. We have wall mounted the set and it takes little or no space (though it is in a big room which makes a difference). We like the different settings for sport, entertainment & films. The energy saving option is also very useful (though we have not assessed how effective this is yet). Installation and setting up was straightforward (though 2 people are needed for installation if you are wall mounting it).

- None found so far.

+ superb picture quality on films, sports and HD pictures, looks fantastic when hung on the wall. Have had no problems with this set at all. P.S. I didn't rate the sound as I run it through a surround sound system

+ Narrow surround looks neater. Picture is really good, crisp with good contrast. Slimmer than most so sits well back on stand and doesn't intrude on the room.

- Dust magnet!! Sound could be better from own speakers.

Expert reviews for Samsung LE40A856

TechRadar expert review

It's gorgeous, it's full HD and its got HDMI inputs galore, but the Samsung LE40A856S1W has got a secret weapon, too, called InfoLive, which functions by connecting the telly to your broadband home network, turning the internet into your plaything. InfoLive is a unique service provided in conjunction with Yahoo that gives you localised Ô¨Åve-day weather forecasts, scrolling news, sport, politics and entertainment headlines and even share prices as onscreen 'widgets'. And all at the touch of a button. A bit like, er, Teletext, which was invented in the 1970s. We can understand the appea…

TechRadar expert review

Samsung is upgrading its game at a rate of knots if the LE40A856 is anything to go by. Indeed, the screen is difficult to find fault with terms of in picture performance or build quality. It's a shiny black model, but Samsung's design team have added a splash of bling with the 'Crystal Rose' finish and the squished-down 44.4mm depth. Four HDMIs and an Ethernet port for DLNA media streaming are provided. Strikingly deep blacksI do still have reservations. Navigating around the copious menu options is a chore, thanks to spongy remote control buttons and a sloth-like reaction time. The au…

Pocket Lint expert review

Having once lived solely in beer cans, widgets are now taking over the world. This 40-inch screen can display widgets for shares, weather and news headlines as part of something called InfoLive. It’s something that Samsung is hoping will give its new Series 8 LCD TVs a leg-up on the competition. A tie-up between Samsung and Yahoo!, InfoLive depends on the TV’s Ethernet port...
