+ Nice styling. Good reception.

- Inadequate tone control for someone who's hearing is not 100%, I find that the sound is too 'mussy', Not enough control to allow a 'sharpening' of the sound. Sorry that this sounds so 'untechnical'! My old Sony VHF had a better sound for me. Sorry I hadn't been able to test before purchase, it was an expensive mistake. At least next time I will investigate further before buying.

+ Very good reception of DAB broadcasts and good quality sound overall. The design is pleasing and the optional battery pack is a good idea which I readily purchased.

- The display is too small and limited especially for people with poor eyesight. Tuning and storing of pre-set stations is not intuitive and even though I am in the brown goods trade I found it difficult to do.

+ It can be Battery powered and it lasts well ** see below.
You can view and rewind the text.
You can rewind the radio! Quite mind boggling and occasionally useful.
Sound quality with speech particularly good.
Has good environmental credentials. Low power consumption.

- ** Battery suddenly dies. Yesterday it had to be removed and replaced to be able to charge. Maybe a fault there. Battery is RIDICULOUSLY expensive, but there's not much competition with battery DABS as they usually drain to much.
Looks are a bit iffy. My wife was slightly dissapointed it wasn't like the 'wooden' ones she'd seen. However she loves the radio now.

+ Neat and reasonably small. The technical receiving seems to be good (i.e. plenty of stations, so I presume that it's sensitive). I don't use the pause facility, so can't comment. It is nice to be able to see what I'm listening to - a feature of all DAB radios I suppose.

- Really disappointing sound quality :-(( Cramped sound, which seems to be not nearly as listenable as my FM sets. No bass, probably because of a small (good!) cabinet, lacking mass. Sound also lacks the crisp highs that I get on FM.

Expert reviews for Pure Elan RV40

TechRadar expert review
