+ Plays DVD Audio and SACD better than ony other hybrid DVD player I have previously had and the image quality is superb getting ever closer to Blu-Ray from normal DVD.

- Had to adjust the picture through the HDMI cable as it was too dark - used THX calibrator to do this and now works fine.

+ Excellent picture upscaling to 1080p! No discernible "jaggies" visible.
Sound formats on SACD and DVD-A are output over HDMI, reducing the need for cables in a home cinema set-up. The user manual is well written and clear - how many times can you say that? This DVD player merits the excellent reviews it has gained in the home cinema press.

- Some people may find the user set up menus a little complicated if they want to further enhance picture and/or sound output settings. If you're familiar with making such tweaks, then this should not be a problem for you.

+ High quality picture and sound. Compatable with SACD, DVD- Audio and Dual Disc. It even plays the advanced audio options on my Dual Discs even though the manual says it won't. Can't guarantee it will do the same with them all but I was gald it worked on mine.

- None that I've come accross yet.

One of the best decks around no matter what price.

- Does'nt have DolbyTrue and DTS-HD decoders built in (Which no standard DVD player has) Is'nt the smallest pklayer around

+ Picture stability and image quality better than any other player at this price.
Cinema sound dynamics.

- CD quality not quite as good as a compatibly priced stand alone CD player but fair to say, most surround sound speaker systems are not a match for performance stereo speakers.

+ A good machine if you are using it on a 42" LCD or Plasma or smaller set. Plays nearly every disc going.

- The DVLX50 was reviewed as being the best player Pioneer have ever produced. The machine admittedly squeezes a lot from a standard dvd, however the picture when played through my Infocus IN82 onto a screen 7 feet across is so full of pixels that you spend more time looking at the flaws than you do the image itself. Will Smiths' face in the first few minutes of 'Pursuit Of Happiness' looks like lego bricks in certain scenes. The player is perhaps too good and shows every defect in a poor quality transfer. Consequently most images are inferior as a result. In a trade magazine somebody once wrote "upscaling is no good if you are magnifying the mistakes". Even on 760p scaling the image is not good on this machine. Having used several Pioneer machines over the years this is certainly not the best by miles. My Harmon Kardon DV37 knocks spots of this and was half the price.

+ Image quality is first class, as natural in depth and balance as one would wish. To have image quality
this good, why should i need blu ray. Easy to set up and use, and looks a million dollars.

- Sound quality with a dvd with analog outputs is first class. But can tend to be a little heavy with some
CD's. But overall fine, if you dont mind that kind of sound.

+ One of the finest upscalers for standard DVDs that money can buy. Gets more detail out of DVDs than any other player in its range. Amazing sound quality. Has now played over 100 DVDs of various ages and conditions without the slightest glitsch or problem.

- None, especially at this amazing price!

+ The combination of this DVD player along with my Pioneer 428xd plasma can make modern day recordings look quite stunning with excellent detail and depth, however some older dvds fare a little worse with this combos somewhat analytical approach making them look soft and grainy. However this result is variable and overall the picture and sound quality are excellent.I have not as yet explored this machines capabilities with upscaling but I believe the result will be much the same . The buld quality and finish of this machine belies it's price and is a perfect match for the Kuro plasma screens.

- Slow loading mechanismand also slow to start.

+ Great looks, great sound, superior picture for standard def DVD to any other player at his price point and many more expensive even produces a better picture than some Bluray players do with bluray discs. The picture and sound are also better tha if standard DVD are played through Bluray, again upto a certain price point. Easy to use, solidly built and a quality looking item Also plays Super Audi CD. Really impressed.

Expert reviews for Pioneer DV-LX50

TechRadar expert review

The Pioneer DV-LX50 was about as comprehensively specified as it's possible to be, with upscaling all the way up to 1080p chief among its assets and universal disc playback (including the all-but-forgotten SACD and DVD-A formats) to keep the most demanding video and audiophiles happy. Build-quality was also impeccable, with the company Ô¨Ånishing a sturdy, double-layer chassis in its customary piano black.Video tweaks The most exciting action was under the hood, though, with powerful 24-bit and 12-bit audio and video DACs rubbing shoulders with decoding for just about every surround…

DVD players and Digital Video Recorders (DVD/HDD recorders) Buying Guide

Manufacturer's Description

High quality, high definition
The DV-LX50 operates at the high-end of our DVD player line-up. It has a rigid, double-layered chassis, which allows for a smooth, stable operation of the optical pick-up unit. What this means is that whatever you are playing, you are guaranteed a smooth, stable performance without any noise or interference from external sources.

Plays your SACD’sYou can play your entire DVD and CD collection, including DVD-Audio and SACD. The DV-LX50 is multi-format. The system will even play the multi-media formats from your home PC, including DivX Ultra, Windows Media Videos or Windows Media Audio files: simply burn these on a CD and enjoy files from your PC in your living room.

The system plays high-resolution JPEG photo files with the Photo Viewer. Up until now, these files could only be displayed at the lower, standard DVD resolution. But the scaling ability of the DV-LX50 means that your photographs can now be shown in high-resolution detail.

Plays your SACD’sThe DV-LX50 has an HDMI output, which means it is capable of upscaling video signals to the high definition resolution of 1,920 × 1,080 lines with no loss of quality. The player also has HDMI Control, which means that you can operate its main functions using the remote of your KURO flat screen TV, for example: a simple, coherent entertainment solution.
