+ Freeview built in. Easy to set up timed program recording from the program guide.

- program guide takes away the picture and sound instead of keeping 25% image like many freeview boxes do. Also, now and next display has a problem at the moment, but I've raised this with the manufacturers and I'm confident they will be able to fix it in a broadcasted software upgrade.

+ Good build quality as you would expect from Panasonic, reasonably easy to use. Very easy if recording from the integral Freeview.

- More tricky to record from another source ie Sky. Initially a bit confusing to switch between different recording sources - probably my lack of experience as purchased new LCD TV, DVD home theatre and this unit all within a few weeks of each other. Getting more used to it now.

+ picture quality, ease of use, multi-format DVD capability, upscaling capability, generally a very wide range of features

- nothing that i can think of....perhaps a little pricey but with all the features & good build quality it still represents excellent value for money

+ I have found it easy to set up, easy to use, high quality of recording, quick to format and finalise discs. I liked the fact I could set a disc to auto start so whenever you use it, it starts immediately, very handy feature when you have kids.

- Havent had much opportunity to use it but i have found there is a big time delay when you turn it on, and unlike my last dvd recorder it does not automatically change the tv channel to av. Also my surround sound system was not compatible with it, which was disappointing.

+ Remote control can also be used for ther TV.

- The biggest failure is that it will not play any DVD that has been recorded on any other make of DVD. All my holiday videos recorded on a Sanyo DVD recorder cannot be played on this Panasonic because the Panasonic will only play DVDs formatted for Panasonic players. A pity they do not nake this clear.
Difficult to set up the DVD initially - handbook not very clear and a lot of guesswork needed.
Slow starting up every time.
Freeview reception not as good as my previous Philips model - picture freezes regularly & people often look washed out.

+ My first DVD recorder. After reading the specification decided this was the one to fill all my needs, have only had it a short while but am very satisfied with the performance so far. The instructions whilst long winded cover every possible aspect & contingency.

- From switching on just a little slow to be able to operate.

+ Clean design lines. Good sound and image. Less mpeg image breakup than earlier models.

- Very difficult to select record mode. If autotune off, frequent loss of channels. If autotune on, operation interrupted by "New channel found" dialog. "Finalize" dialog when ejecting after recording makes it very easy to finalise unintentionally. "Copy protection" activated when copying own recording. Generally, buggy software and unpleasant user interface with very high irritation factor. Inadequate documentation. This is not my first Panasonic video recorder, but it may well be my last.

Expert reviews for Panasonic DMR-EZ27

TechRadar expert review

Taking a look at the feature list, things start to look ominous for the competition. Headlined by an HDMI output with full 1080p upscaling (plus 1080i and 720p, of course), this is a deck designed with flatpanel TVs in mind. It'll apply a near-HD sheen to any material it plays, be it TV recordings or pre-recorded DVDs, and the use of an all-digital HDMI port should keep the signal looking crisp. Then there's the formidable sight of a full list of recordable DVD formats, including DVD-R Dual Layer and DVD+R Double Layer. There's a Freeview tuner on board, which brings with it niceties such…

TechRadar expert review

Just because the DVD/HDD recorder combi recorder has captured the nation's imagination, it doesn't mean that the humble DVD recorder has been consigned to the AV dustbin. Far from it, we'd argue, on the strength of this number from Panasonic, the DMR-EZ27EB.The first thing you'll notice about this DVD recorder is its 1080p upscaling capability. It's not genuine HD picture quality, true, but it's the next best thing to true hi-def and works with Freeview broadcast images as well as those on DVD.This DVD recorder's connections bear out its upscaling capabilities, as an HDMI output lurks …

TechRadar expert review

There's been an explosion of interest in digital recorders of late, and hybrid models that feature the flexibility of both DVD and hard-drive recording have proved the most popular, but the market still has space for standalone recorders.Panasonic's DMR-EZ27 offers effortless recording to any software format and then polishes up the results to 1080p resolution using sophisticated upscaling technology. Since the emergence of hi-def displays, devices with built-in video scaling are nothing special, but not all can upgrade DVDs, recordings and even TV broadcasts to1080p.Provided you have …
