Score 4.0/10+ I have not had the opportunity to use it yet. My objective was to record on a DVD the film recorded on my Sony camera the last holiday I took with my wife before she died of cancer. I must admit I am struggling with it and will have to seek assistance from my sons, as I do not want to accidently delete the film.
- The instructions should be a lot easier for a layman. I had to get guidance because it went over my head.

Score 8.0/10+ Does as expected after previous similar Panasonic PVR (upgraded to get bigger disk and 1080P). Good upscaling to 1080P. good edit capability to top and tail favourite programs for archive, and edit music progs for just the artisists you're interested in etc. good picture quality no obvious artifacts.
- Pong / smell from new circuit board / components seems to be lasting too long especially noticeable when turned on.

Expert reviews for Panasonic DMR-EX79
TechRadar expert review
Panasonic's DMR-EX79 is a one-box recording studio, bristling with cool DIY dubbing tech: Freeview+ tuner, 250GB of hard drive storage, multiformat DVD recording, a GuidePlus EPG, USB multimedia playback and 1080p upscaling. More than enough to warrant a system upgrade. That said, it's similar to its EX78 predecessor ‚Äì improvements are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. In a good way. Initial installation is automatic and reliable, and the menus are as thorough and well-organised as ever. The GuidePlus EPG comes with an extremely handy 'word search' programme-finder ‚Äì which ma…

Manufacturer's Description
DVD Recorder with HDD (250GB) and Digital Tuner and USB Terminal
1080p Up-Conversion By interpolating video data using proprietary algorithms, SD format data is up-converted to 1080 × 1920p HD format video data. This conversion to HD format increases the richness of the original data by approximately six fold, and produces the highest possible image quality when viewing content on a large-screen HDTV. Adaptive HD Enhancer Enjoy watching crisper and sharper video enabled by detailed reproduction of contents on DVD and HDD.
Auto Preset Down Load Connect a DIGA DVD recorder to your VIERA TV via an HDMI cable, and the TV channel setting information is automatically downloaded to the DIGA recorder. Direct TV Rec. If you want to record the program you’re watching, you can start immediately by pressing the VIERA Link button on the VIERA remote control and selecting “Direct TV Rec.” on the VIERA Link menu screen. Pause Live TV Pause Live TV lets you freeze TV programmes just like pausing a DVD, by selecting ""Pause Live TV"" on the VIERA Link Menu.
When recording a TV programme, this function determines where new scenes begin (by “listening” to the voices in the programme) and automatically inserts chapter marks at those places. This makes it easy to skip over adverts and start playback from a particular point.
Navi Link Search To record a programme from the TV listings, enter its title or a keyword, and Navi Link will search for it to facilitate recording. Free Word Search Enter the name of a TV programme or a keyword, and this function searches the TV listings for it, making it easy to set up programmed recording.
