+ Quick and easy to set up. Simple interface. Fast response. Good EPG. Complex manual but it's a complex machine, however 90% of what you need is either intuative or easily learned.

- Very slow startup from power save mode, without which the power consumption in standby is high.

+ Easy to record programmes. So easy to record programmes. So very easy to record programmes. I did copy a programme to disc last night so that my daughter could watch it upstairs. It took only minutes and was superb quality.

- The manual needs tidying. I cannot find important items. Like I am still unsure if I can record whilst watching a different channel.

+ Easy to see the films you have stored on the hard drive and to set the timer. Lots of storage and so much easier than old VHS tapes. The signal improved on our old telly straight away and now we have a new panasonic television too the picture and sound are amazing. The handset works the television too.

- Switching between television and DVD sometimes takes a while and it can take time as a computer to load and switch on.

+ Instructions seem easy enough but have had interminable problems sorting out HDMI. The recorded programmes are well represented and easy to access and it doesnt let you try to record two programmes when u have forgottten u r trying to record full series already. The factr you are able control all actions tv and recorder from one controller evnen if different makers to DVD recorder is very big plus mark for us

- The guide forward viewing is too small and fiddly.
it seems hard to gewt from saved programmes to actual viewing at times and delay in reacting to instructions via the controls

Expert reviews for Panasonic DMR-EX78

TechRadar expert review

Nestled in Panasonic's latest range is the DMR-EX78, a cheaper version of the DMR-EX88 that strips away some of that model's star features, but retains the core virtues that makes its sibling such a storming success.Like the rest of Panasonic's recorders, the EX78 proudly sports the Freeview Playback badge on the front, which means there's a built-in terrestrial digital tuner and a wide range of convenient recording options, including Series/Split Recording, Guide Link and alternate broadcast alerts.Generous storageThe hard disk is 250GB, as opposed to the enormous 400GB drive found on…

Manufacturer's Description

DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, USB Terminal and 250GB HDD

Panasonic has developed the DMR-EX78 with even higher image quality. Picture quality is better. DVB-T Adaptive Noise Reduction detects and removes the block noise that often occurs in digital broadcasts, to produce beautiful images with minimal noise. And the enhanced quality of 1080p Up-Conversion and rich color gradation of Deep Colour compatibility are seen in deeper, higher-resolution images. The Diagonal Processing automatically detects diagonal lines in motion images, and converts them to sharp lines.

The new VIERA Link function of the DMR-EX78 is more advanced. Auto Preset Download does away with the need to make channel and other initial the DMR-EX78 settings. Direct TV Rec. lets the user start recording the TV program that is currently being watched by simply pressing the VIERA Link button on the VIERA remote and selecting Direct TV Rec. Pause Live TV pauses a TV program with the same ease as pausing a DVD disc. The rest of the program can then be watched at a later time, right from the point where it was paused.

The DMR-EX78 is equipped with a USB terminal, so images from a digital still camera can be easily transferred. A large-capacity hard disk drive lets users store music data and turns the DMR-EX78 into a virtual jukebox. It supports gracenote®, In short, the DMR-EX78 goes far beyond the point of easy video entertainment to function as a personal digital media server.

In the SP mode recording, 384Kbps high sound quality recording provides audio quality approaching that of commercially available the DMR-EX78 movie software. Even with music containing a wide range of tones, such as orchestral performances, the sound of individual instruments are beautifully reproduced.
