+ Unbelievable value for money. This is a premium product (and looks like one) at a price that is lower than anything else I've seen for a DVD player that can upscale to 1080p. If, like me you're not ready to splash out on a Blue Ray player to accompany your new Full HD TV, then this is an ideal interim purchase. And it's multi-region.

- The remote has lots of buttons that do all sorts of wonderful things. The problem is it's too compact to accommodate them all in a functional and user friendy way.

+ Has definitely upscaled/improved the images of my original/standard DVD collection.
Nice small unit with good range of outputs on back.
THD total harmonic distortion = 0.03% very good for audiophiles.

- Remote is a bit small/plasticky although works well.

- Profile. The depth of the unit is much shorter than other DVD players I've had. This can make stacking it a bit arkward.

But with brands like Philips, Toshiba and Samsung selling upscaling decks for as little as ¬£40, what's so special about Onkyo's DV-SP406 that it retails for ¬£100? In short: performance. The DV-SP406 delivers glitch-free upscaled images with clarity and sharpness, and takes fast-moving scenes in its stride. Colour reproduction seems natural too. Compare this with a budget deck from five years ago and you'll be flabbergasted. Upscaling via HDMI brings definite noticeable…
