+ I haven't had time to explore the full capability of this camera but I'm delighted with its performance so far.

- The included software is of little value. Capture NX, or a modified version that would allow you some degree of manipulation of raw files, should be provided as part of the bundle.

- VR in lenses costs more pounds but new 50 - 200 should help. Not the cheapest.

- Nothing of concern. SD cover occsaionally pops open unintentionlly, and power switch is easy to turn on when packing camera away.

+ All the photographic controls are easy to use. Flash, with the SB-800, is very effective and can be wireless. Spot metering is a nice feature.

- The mode dial on the top left of the camera can rotate when you are running around and can lead to missed pictures: it caused me to botch some shots when it moved from aperture priority to manual.

+ The D80 is a beautiful camera to handle - everything fits so neatly. It's quite heavy but that's the price of good build and a decent size. The Nikon 18 - 70 lens is great - very well made and a bargain when bought with the camera. Very good image quality

- Nothing that's actually bad. There's a lot to learn - even after a couple of months I only feel I'm using a small part of the potential of the camera.

+ It's a Nikon :) Apart from that - great value for money, really nice 18-70 kit lens (although a bit dark), very good battery life, great image quality, good feature set, nice ergonomics, crisp and bright LCD, large and bright viewfinder... It's almost a D200, but lighter (more plastic), without a couple of features and easier on the battery.

- ISO info not displayed permanently in viewfinder, could use custom preset slots as well as true mirror locking... well, that's all I really miss.

Excellent selection of lenses with more becoming available by the month (best macros and wide angles in my opinion). Good battery life. Excellent Nikon website - for support etc. Responsive and good for many types of image making; landscape, architecture, portrait and close-up macro nature.

- Weight. Lens build not as good as the body.

Expert reviews for Nikon D80 with 18-70mm lens

PC Advisor expert review - by Michael Haynes

For keen photographers with a little money to spend, the Nikon D80 is likely to be the camera of choice. The question really is whether you have the photographic skills to stretch this highly capable digital SLR. Updated with price cut: 5 November 2007.

TechRadar expert review

Features The Nikon D80 replaces the D70s, the camera that Nikon pitched one rung above the D50. And it does it with some style, hiking the resolution from six to ten megapixels, adding a high-quality 2.5-inch LCD and a very big and clear viewfinder (taken from the D200). It matches the Canon EOS 400D for shooting speed (3fps) though not quite for buffer capacity (up to 100 JPEG shots but only 6 NEF (RAW) files). Other features include in-camera photo enhancements like D-Lighting (shadow enhancement), red-eye removal and filters. Performance The D80's colour is a little richer and more…
