- Good points:
- I recently purchased this newer model (DG834v4-firmware v5.01.16) as a backup for a still operational older model (DG834v3-firmware v4.01.06) that I purchased around 2008. Both models appear to work flawlessly with the notable exception below.
- Bad points:
- Firmware v5.01.16 (plus other recent Netgear router firmware) contains a Javascript flaw which affects the "Address Reservation" page: In browsers such as Firefox and Chrome, if you enter a MAC address which doesn't begin with 00, the MAC address validation function returns the error "Invalid MAC address, please enter again!". There is a simple fix however: Just before you press the "Save" button, turn off Javascript and then back on after the save process is complete. The faulty validation function is not invoked but the save process completes nevertheless.

Well-made; clear instructions; functioned immediately on first commissioning, and continues to do so.
None of the above excellent performance was a surprise to me: I've been using an earlier version of this same router since April 2005 (previously bought from Ebuyer), and it has never let me down. The the only reason I replaced the original router was merely to gain advantage from any possible performance enhancements arising from Netgear's further design activities over the intervening eight years. - Bad points:
- None that I have discovered since commissioning this new router on February 18th this year. And - if my previous Netgear router provides any guide in this regard - I'm not expecting any.

A built-in 4 port switch also enables you to connect some computers using cables if you prefer.
Safe & Secure
The built-in True Firewall features Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and Denial of Service (DOS), which operate as your first line of attack against intruders. The DG834G provides both WEP and WPA-PSK wireless encryption standards to protect your network from eavesdroppers and bandwidth pinchers! Content filtering lets you control access to inappropriate websites and limit usage by time of day. To be ultimately secure you can limit access to designated computers using their unique ID, called a MAC address.
Easy to Set-up
The DG834G 54 Mbps wireless router is simple to use – it plugs directly into your ADSL line, no need for a separate modem. Set-up could not be easier; NETGEAR’s Smart Wizard install assistant automatically detects and makes the best connection to your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
