Score 8.0/10
Good points:
Easy Set-up, crisp uncluttered displays
Bad points:
If you are used to windows 7 - just takes a little while to fix the desktop so it all looks familiar again. Much smaller and faster....Great for older Netbooks for an example and gives them anew lease of life.

John , Merseyside Oldish but computer savvy!

Score 4.0/10
Good points:
Installed easily, very versatile, good user interfaces on screen.
Bad points:
Poor HID driver implementation on USB. Wireless mouse and keyboard (both Microsoft and with latest drivers) work very poorly. Reported on the net as being inconvenient for gamers but I use the PC for home and business with no games and the stuttering of the keyboard and pointer jumping about with the mouse make most tasks impossible. The same keyboard and mouse work fine on Windows XP and Windows 7 machines and Dell wireless keyboard does the same as the Microsoft one on the three platforms. Tried usb keyboard and mouse - slightly better but still poor responses on both. Have now gone back to PS/2 connection for both which seems the best option currently. I may downgrade back to Windows 8 or even 7 if Microsoft do not sort this out soon. Very poor product from this point of view.

Matthew, Norwich I like computers.

Score 4.0/10
Good points:
Really easy to install.
Bad points:
It looks horrible and chunky, aero on windows 7 is much nicer. It may look great on a tablet or phone but is too basic for a top end desktop machine. Metro interface is pointless. The programs folder worked in previous versions, why not make the metro interface smaller and less segregated? I can't wait for windows 9! I really hope it's better than this.

Russell, Warwick

Score 10.0/10
Good points:
Speed, ease of setting up and usability, customisation and intuitiveness
Bad points:
Can get stuck on a particular screen sometimes, shame there is a separate desktop still - would have been better to combine the desktop with the live tiles view to avoid too much flipping around

Elizabeth, Bristol Average computer knowledge

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
As a 56 year old woman who is no 'techy' I'm pleased it was so easy to install Windows 8 onto my new laptop computer. It took a little while to work out how to navigate around but with a little patience all became clear.
Bad points:
Don't like the preloaded 'facebook' page nor the email facility. Will carry on using the web browser for these applications.

Manufacturer's Description

Windows 8 is built on the rock-solid foundation of Windows 7, but it’s been improved on all fronts. You can install Windows 8 on the same hardware that powers Windows Vista and Windows 7, and you’ll love how it works on new devices, too. Windows 8 was designed with Windows 7 apps in mind, because you probably have older apps you need to use.

In addition to the new look of the Start Screen, Windows 8 incorporates the desktop that you’re familiar with. Think of the desktop as one of the many apps you can run in Windows 8. In the desktop, you’ll see all the settings, devices and features you used in Windows 7—and you can run the desktop apps you ran in Windows 7, too.

Cloud-connected with your Microsoft account

Sign in to your Windows 8 device with your Microsoft account and you’re immediately connected to the people, files and settings you care about. Your PC comes to life with all the things that make Windows yours, including your Start page, themes, language preferences, browsing history and browser favourites. You can connect your favourite services to your Microsoft account, too, like Hotmail, Messenger, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and more. And you can immediately get to your photos, docs and other files, whether they’re on SkyDrive, Facebook, Flickr or other services.

It’s all about the apps

In the Windows Store, you can search for or browse great apps, all grouped in easy-to-find categories. We highlight great apps for you and provide quick access to frequently downloaded apps. You can also see how other people have rated apps. You’ll always know what’s interesting, new and popular. You won’t have to worry about buying something you don’t want because you can try before you buy, if the app supports it. If you try an app and like it, you can buy it and continue using the full app with no interruption. You won’t waste time or lose your place.
