+ Looks nice.

- Timeshift recording is not always on, needs to be turned on each time you want it. Also, when it is active almost every other function goes dead. e.g. you cannot change the channel. the menu's aren't intuitive and the remote is not well designed.

+ Good value, easy to set up. Generally easy to operate in basic modes - recording, playback, DVD player. Remote control can be set up to activate basic functions on TV such as changing channels and volume

- As usual, poor instructions, which probably lose something in translation. I'm sure this machine will do a lot more than I'm using it for, but have no real way of finding out other than trial and error...

+ The good points are very good indeed. The picture quality is fantastic, set up very easy, value for money second to none. Yes you may find cheaper, but not to this high standard. Overall I highly recommend this LG DVD recorder, so much so that I have bought a second one.

- I would have liked to given this an all round score of 10 but had to mark down on a couple of areas. Ease of use is overall excellent apart from a couple of minor niggles. It took a while to stop subtitles showing & I also struggled a bit with creating chapters, but that could just be due to the whole concept being fairly new to me.

+ Really easy to set up and use, and really like the cross functionality as I have an LG TV. Can also take out extra cover (as I did as bought online and made a substatial saving).

- Could expand bit more on instructions. Although look very comprehensive, could go into bit more detail. However seems to be the way whatever you buy nowadays!

+ I think the general appearance of the machine is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I particularly like the thumbnail view of the recording on the hard drive and now that I understand how the Chapter/Time facility works, this is also very useful. Unfortunately at this time I can't comment on the other functions available because I have not used them enough to express a considered opinion in this respect.

- As indicated above, use of some of the functions has been a case of trial and error, e.g the use of the Chapter/Time facility. For this reason I feel that the users instruction booklet could be more comprehensive. As it stands it seams to me that it is no more than an overview of the functions available. Equally I appreciate that a very detailed user guide can be daunting too so perhaps a solution would be to have the "overview" in the first part of the instructions and a more detailed explanation of the functions in the second part, if required.

- Not very user friendly and the operator manual is not easy to understand for the layman.

Expert reviews for LG RHT497H

TechRadar expert review

If you're looking for an affordable digital recorder that doesn't skimp on features, LG is always a good place to start. Its latest DVD/HDD range includes three models and the RHT497H is comfortably the cheapest. The 160GB hard disk equates to a reasonable recording time of 477hrs in the lowest quality or 43hrs in best, which should be fine for most people, although hardcore telly addicts will probably fill it up in no time. There are five recording modes that reduce picture quality to extend recording time ‚Äì XP, SP, LP, EP and MLP respectively. When recording to DVD, you can use any…
