+ Looks very nice and feels solidly put together. Set-up is simple and automatic scans and tunes stations. User interface is very easy to navigate for timer recording etc. Nice in that you can name the DVDs and it auto names your programmes and displays them in little windows when you go to the index. Nice that it uses so many formats of DVD too. All scarts and aerial connections are included. Picture quality is superb. All in all hard to fault for the money.

+ The long play picture quality is superb , the menus are fairly self explanatory. It will play just about every type of CD/DVD available.

- The instruction book could be a little clearer in some aspects particulary recording issues. The Freeview EPG is very slow although this could just be my set up.It can take a couple of minutes for all the programmes to be displayed.

+ A basic DVD recorder and player with a "freeview" receiver which is all I wanted. Only records to DVD's. More expensive models have their own hard drive. Easy to set up, looks smart and does the job. Very good value.

- You need the instruction book to program it, but I'm sure that will get easier in time.

+ Good value for its wide range of features .
Robust build & stylish design.
Remote control gives direct control of Sony and a few other popular makes of TV
Low power consumption (standby very low)

- User Manual sketchy & unhelpful - sensitive users could be driven mad.
Startup a bit slow & dithery.
USB file navigation a bit slow.
EPG too basic.
General lack of helpful information about current process.
Tuner picture not quite as sharp as my other tuner boxes.

+ DVD player and recorder excellent. Significantly better than other DVD recorders that I have owned and/or used.

- Digital TV image isn't quite as good as some stand-alone freeview boxes.
Instructions are surprisngly poor and would be difficult for someone who was not familiar with DVD recorders and their terminology.
Switching between analogue/freeview/radio seems complex via menus. There may be a simple button on the remote but I haven't found it and it isn't mentioned at all in the instructions. Most users would use freeview only so it isn't a major problem.

- no real bad points except the instruction manual could be a bit simpler

+ the player is very easy to use, it has played anything I've thrown at it, it can play direct to my external 500GB harddrive USB connected, although with 500GB to search through it does seem to need upto 1 minute to list out the contents, but then its as fast as more conventional methods, flash drives are not a problem too. Links direct to my stereo for great sound, and even recorded direct from a camcorder to the DVD, very pleased so far.

- slow to read the harddrive but great that it can even do it. Doesnt seem to want to flick thru freeview channels using the programme up/down button, so have to use the 'list' function all the time - pain.

+ A high quality unit with an excellent freeview viewer built in. The HD upscaling works very well indeed giving existing DVD's a very high quality look on an LCD TV. It is very easy to record TV programs DVD, especially from Freeview.

- The Freeview menu could be better organised, but it does work well. An HDMI cable is not included as standard to take advantage of the high quality.

+ The good thing is the very good quality of the picture and the pure sound and the usb port as well.

- The bad thing is it's not easy to operate and it doesn't work with most cable TV supplier.
I don't know it could be just me as its the first DVD recorder to purshase and all i wanted is to record things from the hard drive of virgin media v-plus box and watch something else at the same time ; But unfortunatly it doesn't let you do that.

Expert reviews for LG DRT389H

TechRadar expert review

Hard-disk combis are by far the most practical option for anyone looking for a new video recorder. But not everyone needs hundreds of gigabytes of storage space ‚Äì some people are more selective in their televisual tastes and can make do with the smaller capacity offered by a DVD disc.If you're one of those people, then a DVD recorder is the best way to go ‚Äì and the LG DRT389H looks like a good option.Glossy DVD deckThe LG DRT389H features dual-layer recording, which doubles the recording time of a single layer disc, while its Freeview+ compliance means you won't miss out on all the…
