+ The screen is very nice. It has plenty of nice touches and could have been brilliant.

- Could have been brilliant but it is badly let down by software. Windows is clumsy to be honest, but the biggest problem; the bluetooth will not work with over a dozen in car stereo or media systems. It recognises, and is recognised, but it will always fail to conclude a hook up.This is because the software does not tell the system when to end its send. Instead it sends a never ending stream of information and a failure results. I have emailed HTC twice to no avail.

+ I bought this as a replacement for my PDA. I use it for email more than telephone calls. Overall, I am thrilled with my wonderful new toy. I made a great choice. It's quite slim, which is good, and reasonably large - large enough to accommodate a nice, big touchscreen but small enough to fit in my pocket comfortably. The 800x640 screen is a key reason I chose this model. It provides a superior quality of image: great for showing off your photos. Together with WiFI, using my 'phone to watch BBC iPlayer and YouTube in bed becomes an acceptable prospect. Facebook and Windows Live are feasible over HSDPA, but are more rewarding over WiFi. Similarly, some webpages (e.g. some BBC news reports) will not load if the data rate is too low. It can be a bit fickle. The Opera browser is good, though. The TouchFLO interface makes it easier and flashier to access the features you use everyday. This may be rendered less important once Windows Mobile 6.5 comes out. I can plug in my favourite headphones. The quality is good. The normal speaker isn't entirely bad either. Can't comment on the FM radio, because reception is non-existent round here. 8GB internal microSD card supplies enough storage for my current needs I was very pleased to see that my Memory Map Ordnance Survey mapping software works well, including connecting to the built-in GPS.

- The lack of hardware buttons means that some software (especially games) just can't work. I find that the minimum volume through the supplied headphones is unbearably loud. I think I have sensitive ears. It's fine with my favourite headphones. In common with most mobile 'phone cameras, the quality is limited by the aperture of the lens, so there is no point using 5 Mpx. It would be as good with 1 Mpx, and the file size would be smaller. That goes for both cameras. This one is a Windows Mobile problem rather than a problem with this model. I synchronise my email with my desktop computer through Outlook. However, I need a different account on the 'phone (pointing to the same ISP account) in order to send email. This means that I lose my record of sent mail. Lack of external SD slot means I can't transfer data from other SD devices. When making a 'phone call, the screen is turned off. This means that to enter responses to the automated telephone systems many companies have, I have to turn the screen back on and navigate back to the current 'phone call. I haven't got remote desktop working yet.

+ TouchFlo is one the best interfaces, even when sat on top of Windows Mobile. Size, shape and functionality are all excellent. Even battery life is okay given the screen size etc.

- Windows Mobile, although good (especially for those who use ActiveSync) is still not the best performing interface and hampers the otherwise very powerful hardware. Perhaps it would run better with Android??

Expert reviews for HTC Touch HD

TechRadar expert review

HTC has been circling the Apple iPhone's lonely campfire for some time now, bringing out worthy alternatives that could rival and beat the Jesus phone in some categories, but not in others. Chief among the iPhone's advantages has been Apple's mighty and unique touch screen, the best medium for viewing media in the palm of your hand. But now, even that looks under threat with the HTC Touch HD.Fully-featured phone The HTC Touch HD comes packed with all the goodies familiar from recent HTC models, including Wi-Fi, HSDPA 3G (with up to 7.2Mbps downloads, speed fans), A-GPS with Google Maps…

PC Advisor expert review - by Dan Nystedt

The HTC Touch HD more closely matches up to the iPhone 3G than other HTC smartphones because of its huge 3.8in screen, one of the biggest available on a smartphone.

Pocket Lint expert review

The HTC Diamond was an impressive handset, but suffered from one main problem: the screen was a little on the small side. So can the Touch HD change all that with its whopping 3.8-inch screen? We've been playing to find out. Big, bloody big, is the best way to describe that screen. Crisp is another word I would use as well...
