fantastic little camera. Its a good step up from the compact and its got all round usability.
The zoom is fantastic and everything is in focus. picture quality is great with virtually no fringing and no blurring.
It has hardly any shutter lag compared to the compact and focuses very quickly.Startup is quick.
The macro function is superb with great clarity on the flower close ups we did. Video is not the greatest but still reasonably with sound included. Have as yet not had a chance to play with the manual settings.
- The only sore point so far is not particurly good colour rendtion when the flash is turned off.

This camera had received very good reviews and is all that I expected.
I am by no means an expert at photography and wanted only to "dabble" at manual effects which I am really enjoying and dont think it will be long before I upgrade to a real SLR and it will all be down to this camera.
I must also admit to a strong bias for Fuji.
- Nothing to put off purchase and I would only be nitpicking if I gave any.

Score 8.0/10+ For me one of the best aspects of the camera is that it has a traditional viewfinder as well as a screen. I find this easier to use and it consequently uses less battery power.
- Linked to the above - as the controls are quite sensitive when I look through the viewfinder I sometimes inadvertantly hit the macro button.

Score 9.0/10+ Love the functions on the camera, and the size I have really small hands and normally have trouble holding cameras. Anti-Shake and Red Eye are fantastic for catching great photos that dont need editing... The neck strap is very comfortable and has a wide padded bit for the back of your neck - close ups are a dream to take. An absolute pleasure to use and play with.
- Battery compartment cover is flimsy and not of same build as rest of camera and the lens cap is a waste of time - it needs to be alot better.

Score 9.0/10+ Great compromise between SLR & compact. Still use my Contax 35mm for "serious" photography. This Fuji sits well in the hand, not too small and fiddly like most digital compacts when you are used to a bigger camera. Picture quality more than adequate for my needs plus it runs on AA cells which is great if you are away from a charger.
- Haven't found any yet. - Perhaps the time lag between shots is a bit long?

Score 9.0/10+ Very high level of features, remarkably good images considering the definition (probably down to very good lens?), compact but solid enough to hold steady with ease, very good manual.

Score 9.0/10+ Lightweight and compact, but with a 10x optical zoom and then a 5x digital zoom - allows you to get really close. All this and it has an image stabilisation system to keep photos sharp and no blurring. It allows for full manual control as well as a full range of pre-set mode functions. All in all I am impressed with it, especially for the price I had it for.
- Need to buy additional power pack as it saves draining the batteries when uploading to the computer and need a storage card too - from my reading in preparation to buy this, an XD card is favoured to an SD card as the photos are more sharp and vibrant

Score 10.0/10+ Compact. Good range of features. Battery life good so far. Easy to use once you've acquainted yourself with the menu system. Image quality good.
- Some purple fringing (in certain external light conditions only). Needs a specific 5 volt external power supply. Indoor flash needs practice.

Score 10.0/10+ Lense and image quality are extremely high. 3 weeks on I'm still running on the original set of batteries. I've had 4 digital cameras before, and usually paid more, but got much, much less. This has become the benchmark for what I'm looking for in a camera. My brother-in-law bought one a week later. Only 8MP, but the 10MP doesn't have zoom in video mode, so am glad I opted for this one.

Manufacturer's Description
It’s a faithful companion for every event, from nights out, the kids’ school play or sports day, right through to countryside walks and family holidays. It’s the ultimate camera for every occasion and perfect for users who always want a camera to hand.
Scene Modes
The FinePix S5800 offers a wide range of exposure control modes for easy, convenient photo taking. And versatile programmed mode dials and scene positions ensure optimum results, no matter what the scene.
An intuitive icon-based graphical interface lets you confirm shooting modes or control settings with brief explanations on the LCD monitor, taking much of the guesswork out of digital camera operation.
Stops the Blur…
One of problems of long zoom cameras is blur because of the poor sensitivity of the sensor and lack of light down the lens tube. The S5800 solves this with Fuji’s Picture Stabilisation mode, which increases the ISO automatically up to 1600, giving crisp, sharp results every time by automatically increasing the shutter speed when light is scarce.
Now 8.0 million Pixels
Boasting an 8.0-megapixel CCD sensor, the FinePix S5800 delivers high image quality that promises you sharper, more brilliant, higher resolution pictures
Film-like Quality…
Fuji is one of the few camera manufacturers to make sensors, and is designed to get the very best of all the essential components working in tandem. The S5800 is fitted with Fuji’s Real Photo Processor to deliver first-rate colour reproduction, image sharpness, low noise and excellent tonal response.
Image of woman at candle lit dinner (noise)
The S5800 loves low light
One of Fuji’s great strengths is high quality images in low light.
Even at night or when shooting fast-moving subjects, high sensitivity of ISO 1600 delivers images that are crisp and clear. And high-sensitivity shooting means non-blur, sharp, focused photos with balanced exposure even in low light, without flash.
Manual Modes for Photo fun
The S5800 is an enthusiasts’ camera, which means it’s packed with a number of shooting of versatile program modes and scene positions choices to ensure optimum results whatever the challenge. One of the most popular, unique to Fuji, is ‘Natural Light with Flash’, where the camera takes one shot with flash and another with natural ambient light, and leaves you to choose the favourite.
Flash with a brain
Most cameras have a very basic flash mode. Either it’s ‘off’, making the picture dark and blurry, or ‘on’ at full strength, giving pictures that bright, washed out, ‘black-and-white’ look. What you really want are photos which convey the warmth and feeling of the scene, with subtle lighting and gentle tones.
The S5800, which has been fitted with Fuji’s latest Intelligent Flash Technology, has solved this problem. The camera reads a scene in milliseconds and cleverly balances foreground and background light to give beautifully exposed, balanced shots. Pictures of people in low light work particularly well, with faces that look natural, not ghoulish!
Use the S5800 as a Camcorder
The S5800 offers an excellent recording resolution of 640 × 480 at 30 frames per second, meaning it can act as a first-class camcorder as well as a camera.
This model can zoom, expose and focus as you shoot, giving you up to 35 minutes movie on a 2 GB card – at almost indistinguishable quality from expensive digital camcorders.
The S5800 is also fitted with an Electronic Image Stabiliser, which gives you the creative freedom to track moving subjects and capture great footage.
