+ This is my 4th Epson Printer (first A3) they are reliable, simple to set up, have first class soft ware and above all the ink cartridges are easy to obtain and unlike some brands, they don't cost an arm & a leg, even more cost effective are the compatable cartridges, but if one has spent money purchasing a quality camera, then it makes sense to ensure the best results when printing, and for me, that means Epson.

- Low ink warning comes too soon and too often, when down to last 2 per cent would be sufficient and more likley to be acted upon.

+ Easy set up, solid looking machine- we use with sublimation ink and the results are brilliant.

- If you have not used the printer for a few days - the print head gets clogged up and it is not very quickly sorted, you need to do clean head and nozzle checks a couple of times before getting the ink through again

+ Extremely easy to install and use, with the Claria inks I'm getting stunning prints from my digital images right away.

- Weeeeeell, to split hairs, I wasn't expecting the printer to be so big! but after swapping a few things around it has found it's niche in the study

+ Primary purpose of the purchase we for its A3+ capability and the fact that the inks are available individually intead of as a colour unit and black meaning that if you only use one of the primary coulurs, you would be throwing away most of the other colours.
It was recomended by a friend who has one, and we have both now fitted CIS systems which make it far cheaper on its running costs .... I had checked that a CIS systrem was available for this model befroe purchase, as I already used CIS systems on my other printers ...

+ Produces excellent good quality prints at a reasonable speed

- The cartridges are tiny, dont last very long and are very expensive to replace. My advice to purchasers of this and most inkjet printers is to fit it with a continuous ink system.

+ Best value A3 printer I could find currently on the market. Individual colour cartridges, good preint resolution, CD printing is quite excellent, good all round printer. Reputable name and energy efficient (apparently). All good enough reasons to choose the 1400 if you need an A3 format printer.

- No USB AB cable! That is quite disgusting if you think about it considering how much the printer itself costs. I'm not entirely impressed with the build quality either. It's no lightweight so anyone considering purchasing one should be sure that their desk (or wherever it will be kept) can handle another 14kg or so.

Ros, West Sussex “Photographer who needs quality”

Score 10.0/10

+ I purchased this printer to replace my trusty old Epson Stylus 870 and also as I needed a dedicated photo printer for my photography. The print quality is really good even on high speed and I have been really surprised just how long trhe supplied cartridges have lasted. A3 prints are crisp and clear and don't take all day to print. Also having the facility to print CDs is a bonus and this is really easy to do. The printer itself is robust and doesn't have loads of confusing buttons.

- The cost to relace a set of cartridges is around £60 and there are no compatibles as yet (not that I would be using them as I rely on the genuine Epson brand to give me the results I want). Also no CIS systems available as yet though I believe Lyson are working on one at the moment. Not the quietest of printers.

+ Quality prints

- Following first installation of ink cartridges there was an immediate "inkout" (no ink) which meant that additional cartridges had to be order before the machine would work had printed anything. Raised with Epson (somebody called Scott) but they did not want to know. Balls aching. Cartridges are expensive but thats the price you pay for good prints.

+ Superb quality prints, easy to set up, does everything I wanted from it.

- So far my only downside is cost of inks and possible problems over availability of cartridges - even the Epson home site did not have one of them when I wanted to order, and my usual stockist for my A4 printer did not stock these at all. I have read some bad stuff on the web about how this printer compares with others, but I have no experience of these others and so far this one is doing great.

Expert reviews for Epson Stylus Photo 1400

TechRadar expert review

We're used to the concept of 'supersizing' by paying a bit extra, but it doesn't normally work out that way in photo printing, with A3+ printers usually costing well over ¬£400. By sharp contrast, the Stylus Photo 1400 costs a mere ¬£5 more than Epson's own R800 A4 printer, yet features a photo-friendly range of six Claria dye-based inks, utilising the same classic ink colours as the P50 and PX800FW, although in slightly different cartridges. The net result is similarly vibrant, richly saturated photo prints that have bags of punch and contrast, with great tonal separation and detail t…

Pocket Lint expert review

The Stylus Photo 1400 is a well made beast with a silver and black livery that makes for an attractive package and while in use its bulk means it leaves a fair sized footprint, its articulated and telescopic feed and delivery trays mean its neat when shut and not in use.The printer’s front panel folds down to reveal the access for printing CDs and DVDs while just three buttons grace the right side of the machine, one each for power, paper feed and cartridge replacement...

Epson\'s Stylus Photo 1400 won our Best Buy award last year, thanks to its low price and excellent photo quality. It takes the same six cartridges as Epson\'s R285 and R360. Like the R285, we had problems with the default colour profile.

Printers Buying Guide

Manufacturer's Description

The award-winning Epson Stylus Photo range of inkjet printers offers outstanding photographic realism through Epson’s photo printing systems, combining special light or different coloured inks with the traditional cyan, magenta, yellow and black to increase the range of printable colours and eliminate the graininess that is often apparent with ‘4-colour’ inkjets.
