Score 8.0/10

+ This is a very easy to use piece of kit. I am far fom being even remotely computer friendly,so I shall not go into any technical area, but I have found this scanner to be prety easy to get to grips with.It is quick enough for me in comparrison to other scanners I have seen at work. I do a lot of outdoor activities so high quality, in case I want to blow up a photo, was important and it has worked a treat in this area.It is a little large this doesn`t bother myself as I put it away to stop the dust getting to it.But it may bother others with a small work space who intend to keep it out. Photo elements 3 is now defunct why not offer elements 6. I probably would have of upgraded to full 6 but have since started looking at other software. So Adobe marketing people you are costing your company a fortune. All round very pleased.

- Slightly larger than I would have of liked. Adobe software elements 3 old hat, even they know it as there were 4 copies in box.

Score 8.0/10

+ High DMax (can scan the darker parts of transparencies well). Fast (unless you're using 4800dpi and digital ICE, in which case make sure you've got something else to do while you wait).

- Not ideal as a transparency scanner as the large, flat, exposed surfaces are vulnerable to dust, however, dedicated meduim format scanners are very much more expensive. MF neg holders don't hold the film as flat as I'd like.

Expert reviews for Epson Perfection 4490

TechRadar expert review

One of the aims of such tests is to establish how much you need to pay for a flatbed scanner. Central to this is whether you want high-quality film scanning, as this is what tends to bump up the price. Cheaper flatbeds can scan film, but usually to a standard that's not acceptable. You might imagine the resolution and precision required for film scanning would have a knock-on effect on reflective scan quality. We'll see about that. One thing that is immediately obvious, though, is this scanner's sheer speed. The 4990 comfortably beats the rest.Although the 4990 doesn't sport a set of…
