+ easy to turn on, to view pictures taken. Good to have both viewfinder and screen. can negotiate menus and views easily. Quick to use. Good grip and weight, feels solid but not too heavy. Gives a feeling that you will not shake camera easily.

- On board help would be useful. a previous camera had onboard frames and special effects but with a camera like this want to take good pics and work on them on computer.

+ fabulous picture quality. Easy to use. Point and shoot simplicity but you can use all the manual features if you want to.

- It's a bit fiddly to get the SD card out of the battery compartment and that is by far the simplest way to access the photos. If the SD card was in it's own compartment at the side (like my previous camera, the Canon Powershot G2 for example), that would be simpler.

+ So easy to use and great qualty photos and movie footage, love the fact that it has a built in feature where you n film as well as take pictures!

- Truth be told I don't think that Powershot A650IS Digital Camera has any bad points except that the SD Card that comes with the card MB is very limited!

+ Was disappointed with an earlier similar Canon model because of lack of Image Stabilization and a couple of other things, but this seems to have it all. Flip screen is ideal for what I use it for.

Expert reviews for Canon PowerShot A650 IS

TechRadar expert review

Many an upturned nose has been pointed in at compact cameras by 'serious' photographers but the eminently pocketable A650 is not to be sniffed at.A 12.1MP sensor takes in the view via the same 6x zoom lens as Canon's more expensive PowerShot G9. Much larger than the glassware featured on most compact cameras, this is a high-quality lens that proved itself with excellent, edge-to-edge sharpness and negligible aberrations in our tests, while offering a fairly fast f/2.8-f/4.8 maximum aperture. The camera itself is quite a bit chunkier than ultra-slim models but, in our minds, that's a…

Explore new perspectives

12.1 Megapixels
12.1 Megapixels with a large 1/1.7" sensor captures enough fine detail for creative cropping and superb quality poster-size prints.

6x optical zoom with optical Image Stabilizer
Optical Image Stabilizer technology counteracts the effect of camera shake. Keep working at slower shutter speeds in low-light conditions. The 6x optical zoom affords framing flexibility with pin-sharp clarity.

2.5" vari-angle LCD screen
A 2.5" vari-angle LCD screen tilts for creative framing and easy sharing.
Wide viewing angle, Night Display and low-reflection coating aid viewing. Screen folds and stores for protection when not in use.

DIGIC III with advanced Noise Reduction
The DIGIC III processor delivers high-speed camera performance, superior colour rendition and cleaner images at high ISO speeds. iSAPS technology uses shooting scene information to optimise camera settings before a shot is taken.

Face Detection AF/AE/FE
Face Detection Technology ensures superb people shots by automatically detecting up to 9 faces within a frame and setting the optimum focus, flash and exposure. Red-Eye Correction in playback keeps eyes looking natural.

Shooting Modes and My Colors
Choose from 21 shooting modes, including a creative zone for manual control. Get the perfect shot, even in tricky lighting conditions. Quickly select options on the Mode Dial like Portrait, Night Snapshot or Kids & Pets. My Colors allows special in-camera colour effects to be applied to images and movies.

Digital Tele-Converter and Safety Zoom
Safety Zoom offers extra zoom magnification without affecting image quality. Just like using a tele-converter attachment, Digital Tele-Converter adds extra reach on every shot.

ISO 1600 and Auto ISO Shift
ISO 1600 combines with optical Image Stabilizer to counteract image blur. A dedicated ISO button allows quick selection of ISO speeds for flash-free results in low-light conditions. When camera shake is predicted, Auto ISO Shift automatically increases ISO to further reduce the risk of blurring.

Smooth VGA movies
Record smooth VGA movies with sound. Choose Long Play VGA mode (30fps) for stronger compression that allows twice as much video to be stored on your memory card.

Accessories
A full range of optional accessories includes wide and tele converter lenses, waterproof case (40m depth) and high-power slave flash.
