+ This is my first good quality camera, and so far has been a dream to use.
Would recommend it to any one thinking of purchasing a DSLR for the first time. There are many accesories which can be purchased for thie camera, and I would recommend a half decent zoom lense if you are interested in wildlife shooting.

+ This was my first SLR, and in all honesty, I expected to have to learn the manual before using. But it is so easy to use, you literally can just turn it on and shoot, as it offers settings that enable you to do that. Image quality is sharp and crisp, and it is just an awesome piece of kit. I recommend it to all!

+ Good menu structure, and easy to follow without endlessly reading user manual.
Comfortable to hold, and gives excellent performance.
Video Shooting is also very easy, and a very useful feature. If you don't want it, just don't use it, but when you do want it your not loosing time fnding your camcorder.

- A bit on the expensive side, but considering you are getting video (*.mov format) at 1080p for up to 29.59min max at one shot, its a lot better than carrying around two cameras

+ Great picture quality, image stabilised kit lens, large and detailed 3" LCD.
Included RAW software (Digital Photo Professional) very capable.
Movie mode is a useful addition with great image quality.

- I you have large hands, handling is a bit poor as the handgrip is quite small.
Microphone is prone to picking up noise from the image stabilisation lens

+ The new larger, more high res screen is great even in bright sun. The 18-55 IS kit lens is much better than previous Canon kit lenses for basically a cheap lens

- Kit lens is very light and plasticy with average image quality.

Score 9.0/10

+ Great introduction to SLR photography, easy to get good results and sophisticated enough to allow for development as on gets more skilled. 1080P video is superb providing you're not trying to make a movie but then most people, even with a good camcorder, aren't.

- Video mode picks up lens focus noise and there is no provision for an external microphone. This can be overcome by investing in a Canon Ultrasonic lens - a costly solution...

+ very good quality of images when using high iso level (to 1200), easy to hold, all fonctionnality as well as a reflex.

- Some fonctionnality are not easy to reach (less shortcut to some modes).
Pay attention to full card: i have lost all my pictures because when the card is full, the camera can't read the card and want the user to reformat the card...Just don't full the card!

Score 9.0/10

+ Very good build
Classic and very Easy to navigate layout (appart from Live-view Focus button)
Good selection of Shooting Modes - quite fun to explore what you can do if you are new to SLR photography
the kit lense 18-55mm IS is good starting point, you will be looking soon to expand your lense collection (old SLR Canon EF fit is compatible)

- Very noisy AF in Movie Mode
Live-view mode not very practical when hand-held - slowish AF (continous AF is faster but more power hungry)

Score 9.0/10

+ Interchangability of Canon lens. Live View. 15.1 Megapixels. 3 inch bright viewing screen. 9 frame burst when shooting RAW files. Ability to shoot in very low light using the available high ISO speeds provided. Very Light and easy to handle. Option for HD video. Integrated cleaning system. The slight additional weight compared to my EOS 400 is easily justified by the additional features and 50% increase in resolution.

- My canon 300 400 all use CF memory cards for which I own a number of high quality rather expensive CF memory cards. Now I have to start over again to purchase high quality SDHC/SD memory cards. The quality of the basic kit lens (18-55mm) is well below the expected quality of a canon lens. The slower frame rate to achieve HD video. Lack of an external mike output.

+ great images ~ really sharp with excellent colour reproduction . The camera copes extremely well with wierd lighting too ~ like a shot I took of a lit candelabra. Took a while to get used to the automatic focus override and am still getting to grips with the manual functions but that could be my problem! The camera is comfortable to hold and light to carry ~ another plus factor for me.

+ the size look and weight of the 500D is impressive, this shows its good build quality. 15.5/15.1 mega pixels make it perfect for post production and give you good scope to digital zoom and keep the quality. settings display screen is that out of the 50D 920.000 pixels, would put most TVs to shame. Lens is great for landscapes and group photos, also portraits, indoors also good with its good f stop. IS so worth every penny.

- cropped sensor, but as are all models in this range so this point should not be a problem, Lens end rotates when focussing, so no fade filter can be used easily, this can all be done easier in post anyway.
