Very fast and responsive (the main reason for upgrading from my EOS 350D).
Many, many features plus ability to customise and retain own settings.
Lens is brilliant - certainly worth the extra over the standard lens.
-
Rather heavy and cumbersome but certainly robust. Get a lens hood.
Needs expensive software upgrade to get most out of new RAW format.

Ease of use, controls are generally of a good size and have a positive feel. The grip feels secure in the hand because of the texture of the finish, which makes you confident you aren't going to drop it. Balance and feel are better than my old T-90. The displays both outside and through the viewfinder are informative and clear. Auto-focus is fast and reliable - manual focussing is easy with the supplied screen. Metering is spot-on. Colours are well presented, if slightly warm under certain lighting conditions. The kit lens has a real quality feel to it. The zoom is silky-smooth and the image-stabilising works very well.
-
The kit lens is a bit slow f4-f5.6. I'd have liked a faster one, but can't afford it at present.

Having upgraded from an EOS 300 (35mm), I was amazed at the functionality of the EOS 40D. Most functions can be customised, making it a very powerful camera. Despite being 'only' 10.1Mp, the picture quality is superb, thanks mainly to the superior CMOS sensor. The EOS 40D feels very solidly built.
I bought the camera with the 17-85mm EF-S lens - it is quiet and quick to focus
-
Parts of the manual can be pretty difficult to follow - I would recommend a 3rd party guide in addition

A good solid camera with a host of features, but which can happily be used in "auto" (point and shoot) mode to produce good results. Weighty, but ergonomic. I would highly recommend it.
-
At its widest, the supplied 17-85 IS lens has quite bad aberrations near the corners, especially on highlights. These are quite visable when displayed "full screen" on my 22" monitor (without zooming in). If you are planning on shooting wide then you will definately need a better lens for this purpose.

Great camera !!! Really sturdy, with easy navigation (knowing when to use the Main Dial or the Quick Control Dial is important).
Great image quality (stupendous in good light conditions) especially for a non full-frame sensor, really good performance at high ISO levels, pleasingly low shutter sound, very fast - both when focusing OR blazing away at 6.5 fps - as my Biggin Hill Air show pictures would testify.
3 custom modes, 14-bit colours.. In short, some piece of work !!!
Really proud to own one (For a slightly heavier price compared to consumer models, you get much more in this prosumer).
-
Hardly any.. Maybe its just me, but the white balance adjustment for Incandescent light can be a bit of a struggle, the auto does not seem to have as yet worked great for me...
Apart from that, maybe Live View does not focus that well... and at times, the autofocus seeks for too long, though is generally very fast...
I was tempted to give it 10/10 for IQ, but maybe need to shoot many more manual frames before being absolutely sure...

The reality of moving from a high end compact digital camera to full size DSLR means you also have to think about your photography. I used to have a 35mm SLR (OM2 SP) for around 10 years and then moved to compact cameras, then into digital photography with high end compact camera's. These return excellent results for simple snaps largely because of the processing and intelligence in the camera. Buy a DSLR and while it can also do some of these things you are buying it mainly so you have full control. What you don't realise is now you have to work and think to take a great picture. The camera does not compensate for you. Something you don't realise when you switch back into serious photography having left it 15 yrs ago. Not a fault with the camera, but something that we may not think about. Anyway no regrets on purchasing decision.

The 40D is very easy to use. I upgraded from a 300d and the controls were similar enough that the transfer was painless. The additional functions, such as live view (especially through the lap top!) are fantastic. The camera feels well built and is extremely comfortable to use. The shutter is quiet, and the rapid shot superb. Being able to take raw and jpg together is a useful (if data-hungry) function.
-
It would be handy to have a live view button on the body itself, rather than having to go through the menus. The live view is a little complicated to use effectively. The kit lens is probably more basic than I would expect for the money - it's good that it has IS, but is not fabulous in low light.

Very happy with the 40D my first DSLR, great fun learning to use, surprisingly easy to get to grips with the main functions, great quality results and good build, really appreciate the display on the top, lens is excellent, not at all cheap. Battery lasts for ages and charges quickly, PC remote control software is fun, editing software is ok. Feel like the paperazzi with the 6 shots/second, girls love it. For results I'd say the 40D with17-85IS lens is three times as good as the best compact and 50% better than the 400D.
-
PC Software supplied didn't work properly, had to download updates for 5 programs from cannon site. Your nose touches the LCD display when you take a photo, leaving a greasy screen, ergonomics are ok but could be a bit better. Difficult to decide which additional lenses to buy, few obvious upgrades.

The EOS 40 was replacing my EOS 350D. The camera is very nicely balanced with a much better display screen than that on the 350. The controls are well laid out but with so many setting options the manual needs to be at hand to make changes. The review screen is much bigger and clearer than the 350 but is still difficult to clearly review in bright sunlight. So far picturers taken with the 17 - 85 have been very good and the image stablising feature has noticeably reduced blured shots. The battery appears to hold its charge much longer, which is good as I haven't yet bought a second battery. I have since purchased a 75 - 300 IS lens and am very pleased with action shots taken with this lens. Overall I am well pleased with the Camera and would definately recommend it to others.
-
None really, possibly the review screen could be brighter. My wife's Canon IXUS 860 screen is brighter and the picture rotates too when turned from horizontal to vertical. This is not a real critism of the camera which I am more than pleased with.

Not found any yet other than I don't really get the point of the little joystick thingy. Most of it's operations can be done by the control wheels, and the odd one or two that can't could have been. It seems more like a gimic than anything useful - but it doesn't get in the way so it's not really an issue.
Cost of spare batteries - but that's not just with this camera.

As a newbie to digital SLRs, I did a lot of research to ensure that I got the right camera. I was considering the cheaper consumer SLRs - in particular the EOS 400D - but I was persuaded to go for the pro-sumer 40D after using a friends 30D and feeling the difference in size and build quality. (Not that the EOS 400D is bad in that regard, but I found that it was a little small for my hands and the magnesium case of the 40D should last for many years and take a bit more punishment than the plastic of the 400D).
The supplied 18-75 lens is great for my needs for now, although I'll probably be looking to add to that in the future - and there are a wide range to choose from depending on needs and budget!
I have a lot of learning to do, but this camera should be good for many years to come and has the scope to grow with me...

This camera does everything most experienced and semi pro photographers demand of it, I am still amazed by it's specification and as a photographer that's finally taken the plunge from 35mm to digital I am kicking myself for waiting so long. As one well known photo magazine said: The EOS 40D does everything that 99% of it's owners will ever ask of it.
-
The camera has none really, the biggest gripe is that it takes a long time to understand the menu system and layout of the controls. This problem will be common with all photographers moving from the simplicity of 35mm SLR to Digital SLR.

The menu is uncomplicated and easy to follow . The controls are very well positionedand in easy reach allowing the camera to be operated with ease . The view finder is large and bright with good information displayed and i found the focus points very useful. I found the sports mode at six frames a second was excellent for taking photographs of moving subjects and with its continuous auto focus allowed me to capture garden birds on the feeder and select the best picture. The camera is well balanced making it easy to hold steady and when coupled with the image stabilizer lens almost eliminates all camera shake which can be seen through the view finder when holding the shutter release half way down.
-
Image quality was very disapointing and what I concider to be the most important feature on any camera.
I compared this camera against a compact camera that cost less than half the price and was amazed at how
poor the quality of the pictures were both at close up and long range the fine detale just was not there.I have tried all of the different settings including auto and manual focus, mounted the camera on a tripod ,taken pictures in raw and jpeg, nothing seems to work. I would not recomend this camera kit to any one stick with the camera on your phone as the eos 40d is only slightly better.

Everything so far, i work freelance doing varied jobs, from covering dance shows to balls and function events and even portable studio work and it hasn't let me down once. Response is lightning fast, very easy to use (although ive come from a older canon, so first time dslr user may be daunted at first, but as long as u have a greater iq than a soggy biscuit, its not hard to learn your way around the camera) and the menu system borrowed from the 1 series is fantastic.
Lens harbours a usefull focal range and is at its sharpest around the 35mm mark (plus or minus a bit) and focusing is very fast on auto focus, and the lens has manual focus override anyway. The camera fits in the hand very nicely, and for the money it is fantastic value, makes buying the 500d pointless since, in my opinion, video is fad on a stills camera and the 15mp sensor doesn't equate to a 50% increase in resolution. The 40d is more professional, quicker in operation (6.5fps), quicker to use (more dedicated buttons, lcd panel on top which i wouldn't want to do without), and more accurate in everything!
If your considering buying a xxxd and are tempted by the xxd range then spend the extra and be secure in the knowledge that the xxd will last longer, give better results and make you feel a whole let better than have having in comparison some tonker toy in your hand which is what the xxxd feels like.
-

There are 2 main types of camera: The SLR and the Compact.
SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. SLR cameras use a prism to reflect the exact image as seen through the lens and so offers a more accurate viewfinder. SLR cameras have detachable lenses offering greater flexibility if you wish to take a variety of different photographs.
Compact cameras have a built in lens and an ‘above lens’ viewfinder which is less accurate but they are often cheaper, more sleekly designed and easier to carry anywhere with you to capture that moment perfectly without having to fiddle with complex settings or a bag full of lenses.

Screen size is measured diagonally from corner to corner.
|
Digital Zoom Ratio

|
1
|
|
Not to be confused with optical zoom, digital zoom enlarges a portion of the image thus simulating optical zoom. In doing so, some image quality is lost.
|
Face Recognition

|
No
|
|
A function for automatically detecting peoples faces and correctly adjusting the focus and exposure to take the best photo
|
Image Stabilisation

|
No
|
If a photo is taken at a slow shutter speed, or at a long focal length, the effects of ‘hand shake’ will be amplified. Some cameras come with built-in image stabilisation which is designed to act against this to produce sharper images.
It’s great for low light shots without a tripod, like at a gig.

|
|
Almost all modern cameras have autofocus. Manual focus allows you to override the autofocus and set the distance yourself. This is especially useful if your camera is struggling to focus in a low-light or confusing scene.
|
Timer

|
Yes
|
|
Having a timer function is essential if you want to get into the shot yourself. Make sure your camera has this feature if you plan to go on holiday and capture photos of you and your friends or family having fun together.
|
Under Water

|
No
|
|
An under water feature means your camera is safe to dive with, usually between 3 and 5 metres. Most dSLR cameras will require expensive separate housing so consider investing in a waterproof digital compact first.

dSLR cameras have detachable lenses and are sold in a variety of combinations. This facet lets you know whether the package your are considering comes bundled with a lens or whether it is just the body of the camera.
|
Resolution (Pixels)

|
3888x2592
|
|
A camera sensor, that captures the photograph, is measured in pixels. The number given here is the horizontal amount of pixels followed by the vertical quantity of pixels.
The more pixels a camera sensor has, the bigger and higher quality the image will be.
|
Shortest Shutter Speed

|
1/8000
|
|
This is the fastest speed at which the camera can take a photo. Faster shutter speeds really freeze the action and are great for sports photography.
|
Longest Shutter Speed

|
30"
|
This is the longest exposure your camera will take. The longer you take a photo for, the more light is let in and the more motion is captured.
Long shutter speeds can give fantastic, artistic results.
Try photographing the night sky at 30s or longer to see how the rotation of the Earth causes the stars to curve through the scene.
|
Max. Aperture Lens 1

|
f3.5-5.6
|
Measured in f-stops the aperture of a lens dictates the maximum amount of light captured.
If you want to do low light photography look for something with a wide aperture like f2.8.
The widest aperture is given as a range as it changes when your lens is zoomed in.
|
Filter Diameter (mm) Lens 1

|

Made to be challenged.
10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor
Canon’s CMOS sensor gives the camera a wide dynamic range, retaining subtle details in shadow and highlight areas. An improved pixel design and on-chip noise reduction ensure clean, crisp images throughout the ISO range. Images are converted at 14 bits for finer gradations and superior colour reproduction.
6.5 fps shooting
The EOS 40D captures up to 6.5 frames per second for a continuous burst of up to 75 large JPEG images (17 in RAW).
Wide-area AF with 9 cross type points
The high precision AF system employs 9 cross type points for precise focusing on both horizontal and vertical planes. The central AF point offers sensitivity up to f/2.8. Points are spread out across the AF frame to better accommodate off-centre subjects.
3.0" LCD with Live View mode
The bright 3.0" LCD provides pin-sharp definition for checking focus and composition, with 10x magnification for finer details. When shooting from awkward positions, Live View mode gives you the option of framing your image from the LCD.
DIGIC III processor
Fast and highly accurate, DIGIC III processes images at 14 bits for finer colour gradations. DIGIC III minimizes power consumption for prolonged battery life and delivers instant 0.15 second start up time.
EOS Integrated Cleaning System
Canon’s built-in dust prevention and cleaning system works to keep the sensor clean. A combination of technologies reduces, repels and removes dust and includes a Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit that shakes dust from the sensor with each power on.
Picture Style
Picture Style presets provide easy control over image processing parameters. Each style offers a different colour response. Picture Style presets are customizable in-camera or through the supplied Picture Style Editor software.
Magnesium alloy body
A durable magnesium alloy body with environmental seals protects the camera from the rigours of heavy use.
EF lenses and accessories
The EOS 40D is compatible with over 60 EF and EF-S lenses, and all EX Series Speedlite flash units. Wireless shooting and remote file transfers are possible with the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E3.
Connectivity
Video Out allows reviewing on a TV screen. Connect with USB 2.0 Hi-speed for fast data transfers.
