Image Quality is just great, much better than I expected. Really am impressed. Video is amazing too. Very light weight, I carry mine in shirt pocket it`s so small. Battery life is ok, altho I`d recomend carrying a spare as back up. Start up time for first shot is very quick.
-
On/Off button is poorly designed. Cannot find it by feel alone. Taking photos of animals can be problematic unless you learn how to skip through menu quickly enough for pet shots otherwise a blurred image results.

It's super compact. I keep it in my pocket at all times and almost forget it's there. Very quick to start up - another great reason for it to be in the pocket at all times. You can see something and have the camera out, on and shooting in no time at all. There's hardly any barrel role on the lens which is ace (I had the IXUS 90IS before this and that was an awful lens.
Nothing was straight). Image quality is fine for a camera of it's size. It's not amazing quality compared to the 90IS or something bigger, but for an ultra compact with this many features I don't think you could get much better.
-
The battery runs down quicker than I'm used to. With the IXUS 90IS I could go 2 or three weeks, shooting every day and using the flash before a charge was needed. With this little fella, it'll last a week of heavy use at best.
This power issue also present it seems in powering the Flash. It feels like it takes 5 seconds to charge each time you want to fire which can make candid quick night shots a bit tedious.
Final point on the battery power is the indicator. It says full, then as soon as one bar goes on the battery you have maybe 6 hours more use before it just dies. The indicator is poor basically. Best keep charging it as much as possible basically to avoid all these issues.
Paint chips off the black version pretty easy, so unless you like the worn look like I do, go for silver to avoid disappointment.
Final points, and being as honest and picky as I can be, the battery cover feels like it might get lose (it already pops off very easily when opening it) and the switch that changes it from auto to manual to video can easily change itself when in the pocket.
Please note that I list all these points being as critical as I can. I would still buy this camera dispite them all. And still recommend it to anyone after a great quality ultra compact. If you want better quality, then go look at larger things that won't fit in your pocket.

Simple to use in auto mode, spend time exploring the features and be even more amazed what this little camera can do. I bought it to use at a friends wedding and got some fantastic pics, I used it for about 14 hours taking pictures and recording HD videos on the day and the battery ran out when it was time to leave the wedding party. I viewed the pictures and videos on the telly and was really impressed! All in all, if you want a small camera that does so much and record HD videos with great functions and ease of, I would thoughly recommend this camera.
-
It's difficult to list the bad points because I'm so pleased with the camera. If I was to mention thing it would be the size of the circular control button, it's small, but I do have big hands! You get used to it after a short while, like the buttons on a new and unfamiliar phone.

Great little camera. I was almost going to get the Cybershot but this Cannon takes much better quality pictures when printed. It's very little, so perfect for the pocket or handbag. I only use the auto setting, but will aim to investigate the manual settings as I think I could take some great shots manually.

Beautiful design and very small and light.. . . fits in any pocket. Everyone wants to hold it. Both picture & video quality are amazing compared to my last Sony camera.

Because of the small size and flush rear buttons its can be difficult to change settings or view pictures unless you have child size fingers.

Light camera at a good price. This is easy to use once you understand the available settings.
-
Having to remove the battery to charge is a real let down. Having used the Canon ixus i7zoom which had a docking station for both charging and transfer of photos, this camera seems a little lacking. The Camera Window software seems to have regressed as it has less features than previous versions.

-
It's tiny! Canon are pretty good with ergonomics but this can be a little fiddly even for small hands. This camera replaces a casio exilm for me but casio does small cameras better in my opinion.
It's got no wide angle - loads of close up shots you just cant get when out with friends in a group. The lens isn't wide enough so you have to step back which means you miss anything spontaneous

It would have been a big bonus to have had a belt pouch specially for this camera.
This is the type of camera ment to be with you all the time. It is not convienent

Outstanding quality pictures and Hi-Def video. Very quick to turn up - no delay taking photos (never miss a special moment!). HD video recording is amazing - better than having a camcorder at 720p resolution. The thinnest camera I have seen with these features - slips into jeans pockets with ease. Recommend getting a genuine Canon case and a large SD card (minimum 8GB)
-
HD Movies are in a format that can be difficult to play - without a top-of-the-range computer the video playback on Windows is poor (stutters) or audio is not synchronised. This is not a fault of the camera - the HD video files created (.MOV) are high quality and intact, you just need a high-quality media player to play them! Try GOM on a high-performance PC. I play them back on the WDTV Media Player connected to my HDTV via HDMI after first converting the audio using the mov2avi utility.

Amazingly there are very few compact cameras now available with viewfinders. Anyone who has tried to take pictures outdoors cannot usually compose their picture without, even with additional shields (have noticed even canon is stopping this feature-which is stupid). Camera neat and compact. Not yet had a lot of use but have taken both still and video.
-
The viewfinder is good but it would be better if not quite as close to the edge of the body.

Very Compact with reasonable battery life and takes a decent picture. Has a view finder as well for sunny days on the ski slopes!
-
A manual focus would still be useful every once in a while.

The image screen rotation does not work if the camera is at an angle. It only works when the camera is perfectly vertical.

Feature rich, nice little camera, good video, great to carry around in pocket.
-
Noisy pics with auto (anything above ISO 100). I guess too many pixels for such a tiny optic coupled with trying to balance this out during processing causes this noise.

Expert reviews for Canon Digital IXUS 100 IS

Quite possibly the most fashionable of the point-and-shoot cameras out right now, the sleek, solid-coloured Canon PowerShot SD780 IS isn't just a looker.

Camera Type

|
Compact
|
|
There are 2 main types of camera: The SLR and the Compact.
SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. SLR cameras use a prism to reflect the exact image as seen through the lens and so offers a more accurate viewfinder. SLR cameras have detachable lenses offering greater flexibility if you wish to take a variety of different photographs.
Compact cameras have a built in lens and an ‘above lens’ viewfinder which is less accurate but they are often cheaper, more sleekly designed and easier to carry anywhere with you to capture that moment perfectly without having to fiddle with complex settings or a bag full of lenses.

Optical Zoom Ratio

|
Screen size is measured diagonally from corner to corner.
|
Digital Zoom Ratio

|
4
|
|
Not to be confused with optical zoom, digital zoom enlarges a portion of the image thus simulating optical zoom. In doing so, some image quality is lost.
|
Face Recognition

|
Yes
|
|
A function for automatically detecting peoples faces and correctly adjusting the focus and exposure to take the best photo
|
Image Stabilisation

|
Yes
|
If a photo is taken at a slow shutter speed, or at a long focal length, the effects of ‘hand shake’ will be amplified. Some cameras come with built-in image stabilisation which is designed to act against this to produce sharper images.
It’s great for low light shots without a tripod, like at a gig.

Having a memory card slot allows you to save data to a memory card and then transfer it to another device. For example you may put a photo from your camera or mobile phone onto a memory card and then plug it into your printer to print directly.
Memory card slots come in many formats:
Compact Flash Card

Video recording functionality allows the capture of videos in mpeg or avi format which is great if you want to capture a whole scene, not just one moment.
|
Manual Focus

|
No
|
|
Almost all modern cameras have autofocus. Manual focus allows you to override the autofocus and set the distance yourself. This is especially useful if your camera is struggling to focus in a low-light or confusing scene.
|
Timer

|
Yes
|
|
Having a timer function is essential if you want to get into the shot yourself. Make sure your camera has this feature if you plan to go on holiday and capture photos of you and your friends or family having fun together.

No
|
|
An under water feature means your camera is safe to dive with, usually between 3 and 5 metres. Most dSLR cameras will require expensive separate housing so consider investing in a waterproof digital compact first.

|
Resolution (Pixels)

|
4000x3000
|
|
A camera sensor, that captures the photograph, is measured in pixels. The number given here is the horizontal amount of pixels followed by the vertical quantity of pixels.
The more pixels a camera sensor has, the bigger and higher quality the image will be.

Digital Cameras Buyers' Guide
Photos taken with this camera
Manufacturer's Description
The Digital IXUS 100 IS delivers exceptional style in an ultra-slim form. Beautiful photos are made easy by a host of intelligent Canon technologies, and can be supplemented by stunning HD video.
Exceptionally slender
With its ultra-slim metallic form, the Digital IXUS 100 IS takes digital camera design to new heights of elegance. Its combination of supremely slender profile and high performance is achieved by a combination of Canon technologies, including two special glass-molded UA lenses. Choose from four colours: silver, black, red and gold.*
12.1 Megapixels
A resolution of 12.1 MP captures every scene in rich amounts of detail. Turn images into poster-size prints, or creatively crop images without losing the detail necessary for larger prints.
3.0x zoom
A 3.0x optical zoom lens gives you framing flexibility when composing shots. Canon’s in-lens optical Image Stabilizer works to deliver blur-free results throughout the zoom range.
Scene Detection Technology for effortless ease
Smart Auto mode uses intelligent Scene Detection Technology to determine subject brightness, contrast, distance and overall hue. The camera then searches an incredible 18 possible modes, and selects the one which offers the perfect settings for the scene.
High speed processing
Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor drives exceptional processing speeds, responsive operation, superb image quality and colour reproduction. Richly detailed, cleaner images, even at high ISO speeds, are the result of advanced Noise Reduction.
Anti-blur
The Digital IXUS 100 IS combats blur with Motion Detection Technology. Activated in Smart Auto mode, this uses a range of technologies to ascertain movement of both camera and subject. The optimum ISO is then automatically set for any situation.
Face Detection Technology
A suite of Face Detection technologies detects faces in a shot and adjusts focus, exposure, flash settings and white balance – for optimal results with natural-looking skin tones. Blink Detection lets you avoid the disappointment of mistimed people shots. FaceSelf-Timer makes group photos and self-portraits easy, taking the shot when an extra face is detected in the frame.
2.5” LCD
Frame and review shots with a bright 2.5” PureColor LCD II. A wide viewing angle lets you easily share images with friends.
i-Contrast
Canon’s i-Contrast feature offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions.
HD movies in stereo
Create smooth, high quality movies in high definition (1280×720, 30fps), then connect the optional HDMI cable for playback on HD widescreen TVs.
