Score 10.0/10+ It's wonderful and light. once you get the knack of it's quirks it's simple enough to use. Icons makes it very clear.
- I don't htink that it has 'bad' points, clearly it's capacity is lower and we found the wireless connection a problem initally, but I'm not very adept at technology. Little niggles include positioning of some of the keys, being so small and the proximity of them to each other as a touch typist I tend to hit return instead of caps key on left.

Marion, Hamilton , “a sturdy little companion”
Score 7.0/10+ The computer allows no-nonsense computing in an unobtrusive package. The full qwerty keyboard allows an easy transition from full-size computers to this much smaller device. In the gap between laptop and pda, it sits far closer to the laptop, unlike the new minibook (one of which I returned to Maplin about fifteen minutes ago). The case is robust and has the feel of something that will take a few hard knocks with no ill effects... although I haven't put that to the test! They have very wisely avoided a hard disc, so there are no moving parts to go wrong. It is simple to use, thoroughly intuitive, and thanks to its being furnished with a linux-based operating system, anti-virus software is a problem someone else has, at least for the time being. It's the kind of computer that would suit not only those with a fully featured main computer, but also the occasional internet and computer user.
- For some reason, the battery is at the back of the machine. This means that when the screen is opened to a comfortable angle, there is a tendency for the whole thing to tip over backwards. It gives a rather unbalanced feeling when using it on your lap. Having the screen-surround in black (while the machine itself is white) gives a rather clumsy 'blanking-piece' look to what would otherwise be a very elegant little machine. I realise that the intention was to use the same case for a larger screen in the later model, but that hardly justifies not at least using a white screen-surround.

* Small and Lightweight
* Built-in card reader is useful
* Easy as pie to install XP on (all drivers come on the support dvd and work without issue)
* Well-made, feels nice and solid
* Looks nice
* Does exactly what I wanted it to do (a simple and low-power machine to use while gaming so I can turn the power-hungry desktop rig off and save electricity)
-
* Default Xandros distro kinda sucks (probably be better for people who would use it as it was intended)
* Horrendously low battery life, I can get maybe 3 hours out of it before it requires charging, not a major problem as I mostly use it at home though
* Being an early model the 7" screen is too small, but I bought it with the express intention of using my spare 19" widescreen monitor with it so this doesn't bother me personally
* No bluetooth is a definite drawback but it's easy enough to plug a usb dongle in if you need it
* Not really enough ram for XP (or xandros to be honest), an upgrade to 1GB is recommended

- Installing XP is hard work and because the OS keeps balooning every time there is an update the hard disk size is a bit of a challenge. Low resolution proves a bit of a challenge.

Expert reviews for Asus Eee PC 701 4G Linux
TechRadar expert review
The Asus Eee PC 701 4G (¬£150 inc. VAT) was the Ô¨Årst of the current Netbooks, and represents the cheapest option in Netbooks. With a tiny screen, low-capacity solid-state drive and Linux OS, it avoids any luxuries, and proves a simple but usable choice. The screen measures just 7-inches, featuring a 800 x 400-pixel resolution. With Linux pre-installed, along with OpenOfÔ¨Åce, it's more than good enough for editing word documents, but the low resolution can prove tiresome when browsing the web, with lots of scrolling necessary. The display also looks lost in the surrounding plastic…

PC Advisor expert review
To PC Advisor, the ultra-small, ultra-lightweight computer remains the Holy Grail. Unfortunately, you generally still pay a premium for miniaturisation. The ᆪ220 Asus Eee PC 701 shatters that perception, though.
