Asus Eee PC 701 4G Linux Reviews: Linux 7" Screen Laptop computer

+ convenience in a small package

- nothing so far (install win xp on it is giving me some grief though ;) )

+ It's so portable; works well and is a joy to use

- the keyboard and screen take a little while to get used to

+ It's robust, big enough to do what we need of it, small enough not to get in the way, and light enough not to be a nuisance when we travel.

- For a person who has never used Linux, it is a bit strange and takes longer to learn. Should we install XP we wonder?

+ Lightweight & very portable - fits nicely into a shoulder bag so it doesn't look like you are carrying a laptop. Makes people look twice when you are using it as they can't believe its so small. Its a neat package and great for surfing the web as its nice and clear to read.

- When you first fire it up it looks more like a toy - but that can be changed to resemble a more adult looking machine. Lots of the functions appear to be aimed at children, with novelty graphics and simple games.

Software available to add, remove and alter icons.

- Wireless Network may be difficult for some less experienced users.
Menus are locked and can't be changed.
Hard to install new software.

+ Wonderful little machine and excellent value for money. Lightweight and small enough to pop in your bag and take anywhere. Certainly not a replacement for a full size PC but for the price it can't be beat. Wouldn't be without mine.

- Battery life is not too good. Linux operating system can be a bit tricky if you're used to being able to install software easily with Windows. Having said that, it's fun learning a bit about Linux and it keeps the price down - I wouldn't pay the extra for the version with the Windows OS.

+ it is easy to use and great to carry around wheather you are travelling abroad or just using around the house or work.

+ Easy to use and VERY light. Linux OS very quick to boot-up. Mozilla web-browser excellent (BBC iPlayer works a treat!). Open Office will cover all your document and spreadsheet needs. Music Manager very capable, recognises iPod no problem. Linux is meant to have a limited array of drivers but it printed web stuff on my HP printer effortlessly and had no concerns with my USB memory stick. Linux (hopefully!) pretty immune to viruses. All-in-all a VERY good basic "surf and go" lightweight machine.

- Linux OS means VERY difficult (ie impossible for the non-Linux community!) to download and install new programmes. iTunes and Quicktime not supported so forget looking at Movie Trails on the Apple.com website! Connecting to WiFi Hotspots can occasionally "hang" (this is well documented on EEE PC forums).

+ Perfectly complete little laptop. Its picked up everything I've plugged into it from mobile broadband to dvd players and outperforms my desktop on most applications...

- The keyboard is a little bouncey but you get used to it.

+ It's smallness is both its advantage - excellent to carry around, take on holiday etc - I can get it in my large handbag, but is also it's disadvantage - the keyboard is very small and typing can be difficult, the screen is tiny (but can be attached to a monitor), however, good points far outweigh the bad points.

+ I love the size - very transportable and it has all the features and facilities that I want.

- Because of the size, you have to be more careful with the keyboard because it is easy to hit the wrong keys.

- The units come with a Linux operating system which although some people are familiar with many people aren't. The solid state storage capacity could do with being doubled to accomodate a windows xp operating system comfortably. Windows XP could be installed but it has to be stripped of some of the default programmes to fit the 4Gig drive.

+ Boots up in 25 seconds, very light and portable, no moving parts (solid state hard drive), works straight out of the box.

- Only 4Gig hard drive, not very good battery life. Linux operating system not very user friendly.

+ This is a proper computer that has become a full time alternative to my PDA.
It boots quickly and with a keyboard and full versions of firefox and OpenOffice make work on the go much easier.

- 7" screen can be a bit tight at times.
Battery life could be improved.
Linux OS not particularly user friendly for installation of new software.

+ Price, specification, speed of booting & use, quality (especially sound & vision, both internal & external). Overall, I'd say buy it IF you know what it is (I did & I like it - or I will if I ever get my 3 USB modem working on it) - would NOT recommend as a toy for the kids - without technical ability & perseverance, you wont be able to add the things you want (unless very lucky).

- Screen size (very short on vertical resolution), trackpad buttons (a little tacky & unreliable IMHO), keyboard (due to the size, it is a little cramped, unavoidably) & Linux (definitely fast & probably better than windows for the specific application, but don't expect to have an easy time if the EEE PC is your Linux baptism).

+ Small powerful machine. Boots fast. Easy to use. WiFi works very well with good range. Reasonable battery life. Linux operating system works well. Installed programs adequate for most word processing, spreadsheet & presentations needs (Microsoft Office compatible). Anti Virus software included. 3 USB ports provided. SD card reader built in. 512mb Ram which can easily be upgraded if required.

- Small capacity flash drive. 8gb should be minimum as operating system takes up much of provided 4gb.

+ Everything I need is on this computer. I can fit it in my brief case, its fast to start up. Has email and I can use my memory stick to transfer documents. For every day its all I need. My son is 12 and he is less keen as he likes to watch dvds and play cds so not quite as good for teenagers at play but perfect for younger kids and adults of a certain age who like to keep things SIMPLE
I love it and use it far more than my expensive all singing all dancing tablet lap top

- Small keys take a little getting used to. Not so easy for clumsy fingers but its a minor point rather than a bad point.

+ Perfectly portable, sturdy, goes from the box (no messing about loading stuff and setting the system up), easy to navigate and use, does everything I need it to.

+ Amazing value for money, this is a full blown pc for the average user and the portability make it a great second laptop for a lot of people who have high need for computing mobility. Even as a quick to use laptop for checking emails and web sites at home it is very effective.

- Takes a bit of getting used to the smaller screen resolution and cramped keyboard but you will adapt. It is hard to see the small keys in the dark - at least on the black model.

+ Product is an excelent portable laptop, I up graded the RAM, put a SDHC card in and installed xp. Does everything I need it to.

- Only downers is that ther keypad is small and is hard to get used to. Best used as a portable pc.

+ Everything one needs to go on the web, check emails, work on documents, view photos, make Skype calls etc. while on the move is included in a package half (or less) the size, weight and price of a traditional laptop.

- The screen size is the only drawback. (This has been resolved on the latest 9" model at a reasonable higher price.)
