I got one for myself and my wife, and shown it to my parent and they purchased one and now my daughter wants one on her christmas list, Must be good to get 4 purchases so far from one family.

+ Small and light, very good for travelling. Excellent extra is the power lead: as is, it's a UK plug, unclip a plastic front to the plug, and it's a US plug.
Excellent for web surfing, writing on the fly - the keyboard is ok once you get used to the smaller layout.
3 USB ports - keep your data on USB sticks and organise your filing system.

- Keyboard double-strikes and doesn't pick up some keystrokes on fast typing.
Make sure you don't rest it on your lap when working - air vents on base of unit may get covered, with overheating and increased fan speed resulting.

+ It's tiny. The size of a large paperback novel. Great for taking around when you dont want to lug a normal laptop. The PSU is very compact - like a mobile phone charger. Runs windows XP no problem, and runs very quietly. The in built Linux is fine, but it comes with all the drivers for XP if you want them. Finally, of course, it's very cheap for a UMPC.

- The screen is a little too small vertically. The keyboard is a little unresponsive, and with the tiny keys I spent as much time going DELETE DELETE to fix the constant typos as I did hitting the right keys. Gets easier with practice though.

+ I would rate the 701 EEE 6/10, it's by no way a full laptop, the absent hard drive and only having 4gb SSD is a downfall, however you can use a 16GB SD card in the slot on the side to store files, the screen is really bright and sharp and plays divx great (although you do have to tweek the video settings slightly as you get tearing on the video if you dont)
The speakers are very loud something of this size, the EEE is tiny and would be excellent to take on holiday with you for using it to get your email, browse the web and watching videos, the plus side would be you could back all your photos up from your memory card onto a HDD.

- I would have to say the 701 EEE has two major problems, mainly the battery life, it is dire!, it lasts about 50 mins with the wifi turned on and screen brightness at mid way, you could not use this to watch a film without a power source being nearby, Asus state the battery should last 3.5 hours, however they also state you should get a 5200mAh battery, but a 4400mAh battery is supplied, the other major problem is the screen for web browsing, its too tiny and you have to scroll across on many pages, the 900 EEE has solved this problem because of the larger screen, it has a very very tight earphone socket, dont plug your ipod earphones into it because you will not get them out without breaking them (i've been through 3 sets of earphones since) it trashes the earphone socket. I would not recommend the Asus 701 EEE to anyone who likes long battery life, who doesnt like scrolling across web pages, the 900 is better but still with the poor battery life, the atom version is better still however not very good at playing back video so i hear, I'm waiting for the Dell Mini Inspiron.

Loads of online support in terms of forums which offer excellent advise from other users.

- Small hard drive space means extra programs have to be stored on either an SD card or memory. Also gets quite hot as it is a solid state disk.

+ My ideal device would be a Psion 5 with a USB port and MS Office compatible software. I really just want to be able to continue working while doing the daily commute. The EEEPC actually offers a whole lot more and gets used more as a result. Build quality is very good. The 7" screen is fine my needs - I'm not planning to do photo editing on the train. Open Office does most things fine. The Linux OS seems very stable and can be configured to work just like Windows if you want. The larger screen/memory version adds considerably to the price and is only worth considering if you must have Windows. Overall, I think this machine is brilliant!

- Only two grumbles:
- I would have liked better battery life - you get a little over 2hrs which only just covers me to and from work. I'll maybe buy another psu to keep at work.
- It gets surprisingly warm after 20-30mins continuous use. A little fan kicks-in and this no doubt affects the battery life.

+ IN MY OPNION, THIS IS A "LAPTOP" MADE FOR TRAVEL AND USE THE INTERNET "ONLY", thats why I bought for!
VERY LIGHT, VERY SMALL, BUT THERE IS NO HARD DISK AND NO CD/DVD PLAYER.
You can save all your photos, videos, musics and documents in a SD MEMORY CARD (maximum size available to buy is 16GB in the moment), sorting out the absence of a Hard Drive.

- 1) Pay attention when you buy if comes with LINUX or WINDOWS XP.
I didn't like the LINUX, if you have a option to choose, buy one with WINDOWS XP. It's available in that ASUS EEEPC4GB INT in some stores.
2) Due to a very small screen, to see SOME web sites you have to use the scroll up and down all the time. :-(

+ This ultralight laptop (I've owned heavier mobile phones in the distant past) is an amazing piece of kit if you need something that won't be a hassle to carry around and still allow you to do everything you would be able to in your home/classroom/office. The Linux based operating system is perfect for a device of this size and is setup to use an intuitive windows-but-better style interface so there's no need to worry about having specialist knowledge in order to utilise it's full potential. The Open Office software pre-installed is completely compatible with Microsoft files and switching files from windows PCs to the eeePC is effortless via USB drives or flash memory cards. The wireless networking capability is equally as effortless to use and the overall value for money is amazing. The battery life is much better than full-sized laptops i've used in the past too. A lot of friends and colleagues who initially teased me for buying a 'children's toy' are now desperately trying to find somewhere that has them in stock!

- Being ultra-small, the screen size can't display the whole width of some web-pages, but I'm nit-picking really in order to find something to put in this section!

Built in linux is fine for web and email though you'll probably want to install the Opera Browser as it sizes better to the screen than firefox.

Easy wi-fi connectivity. Webcam included. Linux operating system simple to use as long as you are happy with a limited number of programs that are compatible. Very good user forum to help get started. While onboard memory is limited, portable storage devices can be substituted.

- Screen a little too small. Keyboard can be a little awkward to use; not as easy to type quickly as with full size one. Processor too slow if you want to do much more than usual office tasks, such as video. This PC will do anything that I want a full sized system to do, the built in WiFi, USB etc allow me to connect to systems and networks wherever I am.

- Needs a zoomable browser as standard (I now use opera) as a standard web page is too large for the screen.

+ I would recommend this to anyone needing a little computer for browsing the internet or requiring a backup device to a main computer. It's also a great little device and very handy if your a geek and need to perform geek type tasks ;)

- Screen can prove to be a bit small at times but the eeepc is capable of driving an external monitor at 1440x900 if you need the little extra screen real estate from time to time.

Ellie, Wigan , “I'm quirky!”

+ Start up time is super quick, although slightly longer if you activate the active desktop - which I have. Easy Mode does exactly what it says on the tin, although you can't personalise it at all. Active desktop is great, and also "unlocks" some of the feature not accessible in the easy mode. Personalisation is available although getting icons to stay on the desktop is a pain. LInux is the best operating system EVER. So quick, smooth and easy to find your way around. So light and portable it never leaves my side, and I've never had a problem connecting to wifi no matter where I am.
Over all it's the best money I've ever spent!

- Battery life could be a little longer, but then I do use it excessively. Active desktop set up could also be easier although I found all the info I needed on the Asus forums etc.

+ It's small, it's light and cute. The operating system is fine and I could open and edit all of my Microsoft Ofice document, speadsheets on it - even though the PC oly has its own version of those programs on it.

- The screen is very small and so is the keyboard. My fingers are quite small and I had trouble typing on it for any length of time.

Expert reviews for Asus Eee PC 701 4G Linux

PC Advisor expert review - by Melissa J Perenson

To PC Advisor, the ultra-small, ultra-lightweight computer remains the Holy Grail. Unfortunately, you generally still pay a premium for miniaturisation. The ᆪ220 Asus Eee PC 701 shatters that perception, though.
