- It was hard to connect to the internet when we was using the re-router sat the same time as the main PC. In the end i took it back because some of the keys were mixed up, for example when you pressed "Speech Marks" there would be "?"

+ An excellent 'small cheap computer' - and a nice intro to Linux for the uninitiated... My AA1 slips easily into my bag, boots fast (~15sec), and everything works well. I added an 8Gb SDHC card for some extra storage space, as the native 8Gb drive is kind of small.

- The fan can be a little noisy, and longer battery life would be good - even if this added 100g to the weight... Otherwise, I can't really fault this.

+ 1) The Linux Linpus operating system has a relatively small footprint (compared to the bloat of Windows) and is quick to boot up.
2) The installed software is easy to use.
3) Can play most types of video without a hitch.
4) The Acer Aspire One is well-built and the keyboard is fine for adult fingers.

- 1) For a newbie, Linux can take a little getting used to and installing new software may cause a few headaches, but there are plenty of forums online to help the end-user.
2) The cpu fan, while not as noisy as that of a full-sized laptop's fan, is audible in a quiet environment

+ We brought this as a present for our 7yr old. The overall size is perfect for little fingers, we have to remember children of this age are learning fast and the sooner they can use a computer to surf the net and find games, information and chat the better. The whole family have tried it out and found it just as good as the PC and other laptops in the house. It conected to our wireless network at home without any trouble and she has taken it out to other places and been able to use their wi-fi system to.

- Cannot find any.

+ The laptop is a solid and fast pc that is easy to use with the software provided. Ideal for basic portable computing and surfing the internet. It includes all the software you would need for basic office work, internet, email and chatting.

- The provided Linux software is easy to use but if you want to 'personalise' the laptop it becomes very complicated. Even the task of installing new programs is complicated and certainly not for a beginner as it involves typing lots of line commands and even then there can be lots of complications. But if you just want a portable laptop with the basics to get by then this is a very good laptop.

+ this device is so light weight and portable i can take it anywhere, in my backpack or satual. the keyboard is a decent size compared to other netbooks, and i would recommend it for students in particular. it has a decent batter time, and can be upgraded to a six cell batter if you need more battery time.

- the design flaw in the acer one is really the touchpad, which is too small and thus frustrating and annoying to use and i recommend getting a small plug in mouse to remedy this problem. another thing that i disliked was the limpus lite interface. though this is entirely a personal preference. for those simply wanting to write up documents, or surf the web, its fine to use. if you wish to open up the acers full capabilities and use it like a real laptop, a few minuets surfing the web will show you how to open it up to use the real desktop environment

- Even though the screen is intentionally small it is a little frustrating to use. Its a little too small and could do with an extra inch or two. It is harder to read text on an 8.9" screen than you would expect meaning this machine is great but only in short bursts - any longer gives you eye strain.

- Linpus operating system is fine as it stands, but if you want to upgrade it / mess around with it, then you're better off with another operating system such as Ubuntu, but Ubuntu support for the wireless driver is patchy (seems to work for some people but not for others).

+ I have the Linux version. Start up, shut down and flicking between programmes is smooth and fast. I use it for the internet, webmail, a little bit of word processing and browsing photos and it works fine. The screen is great and the keyboard and mouse are both easy to use (despite what the reviews say about the configuration of the buttons).

- The Linpus Linux OS is pretty inflexible and adding programmes is not easy. Worst problem though and really a deal breaker if I'd known is that the battery dies without warning when it oughtstill to have about 50% of its charge. Mihne may be faulty but every time I get cross enough to check if works fine for a while... The wireless card sometimes doesn't detect feint signals when other com-puters would.

I am no computer boff but as soon as it arrived I was able to get it started and even connected to the internet-the instruction were very clear and simple and therefore ideal for everyone. I do only use it to transfer photos from a memory card, the internet and check E.mails. Its great and already a friend of mine has brought one.I guess if you were looking to download lots of stuff from the internet then it may not be so good but for me its GREAT.

- You do have to scroll alot as the screen is small, but then I guessed that would be the case when I brought it. It just takes a bit of getting used to using the mouse and pointing the cursor.

+ So easy to set up and use - I have had no problems with accessing my email account or surfing at all. It responds quickly and although the mouse pad can be fiddly, frankly it's no worse than others I have used. All round, it's a great piece of good value equipment which I have - and will continue - to recommended to others.

- Not much - except for that mouse pad - and that's not enough of a pain for me to grumble.

+ it is a very easy product to use. with simple straight forward operations. it was set up with my wireless within five mins. very happy with it the ACER.

- the only bad point is it needs a nice quilted bag to go with it. any netbook bags available were either far to big or too small and very expensive.

Laptop Buyers' Guide

Manufacturer's Description

Acer redefines mobile connectivity with Aspire one, the revolutionary netbook packed with fun and powerful computing features in a diminutive 8.9" form factor.

SmartStart in just 15 seconds

From the moment you switch it on, the Aspire one is ready to go in just 15 seconds (with Linpus™ Linux® Lite version). That’s what we call a smart start. Once on, the interface is pure simplicity: a home screen divided into four areas that contain all the applications you need to stay connected, work, play, and organize your life on the road. And as your Aspire one is as unique as the way you use it, you can customize the applications on the home screen so that it’s just right for you. Fast, simple and indescribably chic. That’s your new life with the Aspire one.

Vision: One idea

How big is perfection? How small is ideal?
The Aspire one has an 8.9” CrystalBrite LED backlit LCD with 1024×600 resolution and an integrated CrystalEye™ webcam that offers just the right balance between easy-toread clarity and easy-to-use functionality. You could almost call it the perfect fit.

Power: One energy

Power comes in many forms. Often the smallest is the most powerful. The Aspire one comes with the Intel® Atom™ processor, built with the world’s smallest transistors and designed specifically for low power consumption while delivering the power and performance you need for full online freedom.

Style: One look

Your style is your signature. It is your identity, your personality your calling card. Your style tells the world who you are and how you live your life, both online and off. It is all you need to be yourself. Your style comes in different colours, each with its own individual character. So does the Aspire one.

Feeling: One freedom

Smaller than an average diary and weighing less than 1 kilo (models with NAND flash module), the Aspire one puts freedom in the palm of your hands. Freedom to use WiFi, WiMAX and 3G Networks* to explore new ways to connect, communicate and interact with the world you care about. Freedom to go beyond ultra-mobility. Freedom to be yourself anywhere you want to.
(* depending on network readiness)

Experience: One control

The Aspire one has one of the most intuitive interfaces out there that takes just seconds to learn, and smart software that keeps you productive, entertained and connected all the time. Why? Because your online world is a very personal place that changes every time you connect but remains familiar because it’s a world you create. One interface, a whole world to discover. Why do it any differently?
