Score 10.0/10+ This lens has the build quality of a rolls royce..
- a bad point... on this lens ? ... you must be joking

Score 9.0/10+ The sharpness of this lens is awesome - even looking at unprocessed RAW file images at actual pixel magnification in photoshop it is sharp and smooth with good contrast and colour. Build quality is excellent with nice smooth focus and zoom rings. A lens I will keep forever.
- It is heavy (nearly 1 kilo) and a little obtrusive- because of the weight I find it easiest to use a monopod wherever possible. I am so impressed I am considering buying its 14-24mm counterpart but I will have a problem carting this stuff around with my other lenses and my D300 camera, let alone the cost. I have scored only 7 for value for money simply because it is a lot of money to pay, but I think it worth every penny.

- Heavy and big

Score 10.0/10+ Super sharp, excellent coulour rendition. Works sensationally on my Nikon D700.
- A little heavy, but worth it. Get a good strap - I got the Optech and it transforms carrying the camera and lens.

Score 8.0/10+ First rate piece of equipment
- Too big and heavy. Nikon need to look at reducing size and weight of professional equipment. Too obtrusive and difficult to carry around.

Score 9.0/10+ Excellent build quality, very good optics.
- Still quite high priced.

Score 10.0/10+ Excelent quality images. Much better design lens hood than cheaper Nikon lenses.
- I have found no bad points about this lens.

Score 9.0/10+ The image quality is superb, but the 50mm 1.4 prime lens is as sharp. I bought this lens only because I simply need to react quickly when undertaking events/wedding photography, where the zoom comes into its own. For portraiture I'd still use my 50mm.
- It has to be the cost. At £1200 it is certainly not a purchase to rush into and if you can simply move your physical position to take a photo at not miss the opportunity I'd advise the 50mm 1.4. The other downside is the weight of the lens. When using it on the D700, it adds up to a substantial weight. The price and weight, oh and the lack of VR, does not allow me to give this lens 10/10.

Score 9.0/10+ picture quality is really excellent
- very heavy to carry and the with the glass being so close to the front of the lens you'll need to put on a filter for protection aginst damage

Simon, St Albans , “Professional photographer”
Score 9.0/10+ Edge to edge sharpness is good as well as great contrast in back-lit situations. The lens produces little flair giving enriched tones in almost all instances. The build quality is excellent and rugged as is the norm with Nikon professional lenses.
- Perhaps slightly slower to focus in autofocus modes that the DX equivalent 17mm-55mm f2.8

Score 9.0/10+ Good crisp image, 2.8 throughout, sturdy.
- a bit over priced

Score 10.0/10+ I think this is a cracking lens the optics used are high quality producing sharp crystal clear images, a solid lens and in my opinion there is a need for it in in every photographers bag.
- Probably just the cost, was the first lens of this quality i had purchased so wasn't used to spending this sort of money but would do it again after using the lens for a while.
