Books on the way out, Nintendo on the way in

Monday, December 1st, 2008 by Jo

nintendo-dsNintendo are set for world domination with the DS. Not only do they already teach people how to speak different languages and help them stop smoking, they can now be used to read entire books.

The Nintendo DS will now be able to be morphed into an eBook reader with its 100 Classic Book Collection package. Among the classics packed in will be gems from Lewis Carroll, Shakespeare, and Dickens. But if they’re not your cup of tea, you can use the Wi-Fi feature to download something more to your taste. nintendo-ds-100-classic-book-collection-choose-book

You can find the list of 100 titles below. If you’ve thought ahead and decided that this would be great Christmas present for someone you know, think again. For some strange reason, this package is set to launch on Boxing Day - clever, hey?

It’s £17.99 and available for pre-order from Amazon. It all works out slightly cheaper than buying one of the £200 Sony e-readers but the thought of sitting on a train whilst trying to read an entire book on that screen makes just popping to the library to pick up a paperback a much more preferable option. What do you think?

Nintendo DS now helping with languages

Monday, June 30th, 2008 by Jo

Well, first we found out that those helpful folks over at Nintendo were helping people to stop smoking. Now we hear that they’re helping Japanese students with their English too. A teacher at the Tokyo Academy for Girls has introduced the Nintendo DS into English lessons to help students concentrate.

The DS helps the students with their writing, listening and vocabulary but they are under strict instruction that all the machines must be handed in at the end of the lesson and no other games, apart from the English aid, are to be used.

Despite the lack of fun games, the students do seem to be enjoying the new method of teaching and they’ve even commented that they’re finding the lessons more interesting and engaging.

This is still a trial at the moment but what with all these new ways we’re discovering that consoles can help people (the Wii fit helping people to lose weight, the DS helping people to quit smoking etc.), who knows where the possibilities will end.

If you’re in two minds over whether to get a DS or not, try reading the Nintendo DS reviews first.

Stop smoking with Nintendo?

If you were trying to stop smoking, would you turn to Nintendo for help? No? Well now, if you wanted to, you could.

It’s goodbye NHS, hello NDS as Nintendo DS will soon have up to 15 games to keep those nicotine cravings at bay. The games will be based on the battling addiction books by Allen Carr and will be set in environments where smokers find it hardest to resist the tab temptation, like pubs and clubs.

By entering details about your habit, your ‘personal coach’ will guide you through the quitting process. It will suggest treats to reward yourself with when you’ve had a good day and when you are finally free, you can even find out how much better life can be by measuring elements from your smoke-free lifestyle, such as walking up a flight of stairs without a lung collapsing.

It all sounds a bit strange to me and we’ll all have to wait until November for it to be released…and to find out whether it actually works.
