Exclusive Nokia TV is here!

Monday, September 22nd, 2008 by Sam
N96

If it wasn’t enough to launch the N96, Nokia have also come up with exclusive N96 TV. ‘Capsule 96′ will broadcast ‘mobisodes’ that are all 96 seconds in length - nice stunt, hey? These ‘mobisodes’ – sorry, it’s such a silly word that I had to use it twice – will feature topics such as fashion, comedy, gadgets and motoring with appearances from people like the designer Wayne Hemingway.

Capsule 96 is supposed to appeal to those with little time on their hands who want “infotainment” on the go. It all seems a little odd to me but hey, it could work…

New Nokia N-series - N85 & N79

The Nokia N-series has a couple more handsets to add to the family. The N85 and N79 are different to each other in looks but pretty similar in terms of features.

The N85 is a two-way slider with a 2.6 inch OLED screen. OLED - Organic Light-Emitting Diode, which basically means it uses less power, responds faster and has a faster refresh rate than a traditional LCD. This makes it particularly good for gaming, which is a good thing because there are 10 games included with the N85, one of which you chose yourself.

The N79 is a candybar handset with a 2.4 inch screen and Xpress-on covers. In fact, on the N79, the back cover will even change the colour on your screen so that your whole phone matches – brings colour coordination to a whole new level.

Apart from style, the main difference is the memory that comes with each phone. The N85 comes with an 8GB SD card whereas the N79 has been palmed off with a 4GB SD card. But both phones come with a five megapixel camera, FM transmitter, GPS, geotagging for photos, Wi-Fi and 3G with HSDPA.

The N85 is due to be released in September and the N79 in October.

Price wise, you’re looking at:
N85 - £358 (€450)
N79 - £279 (€350)

Take a look below for the main specs.

Not content with simple maps, Nokia have teamed up with Lonely Planet to create a mobile tourist map extravaganza.  Adventurers can download city guides to their mobiles for over 100 hot tourist destinations so that the “where shall we eat” question need never be uttered again. Among the restaurant recommendations, you can also find where to sleep, shop, visit and boogie. No more heavy books and highlighters to pack in with your toothbrush and sleeping bags.

There was mutual love-giving from Nokia and Lonely Planet with Maximilian Schierstadt, head of media partnerships, at Nokia context-based services, saying: "Lonely Planet is a well-known brand amongst travellers and stands for adventure and editorial independence.

"We are very excited to offer their expert local recommendations and itineraries to our Nokia Maps consumers, which will allow Nokia to continue to innovate and enable compelling location-aware experiences."

Stephen Palmer, CEO of Lonely Planet Publications, added: "This is a genuinely transformational deal, which makes Lonely Planet content available regardless of time or place… Together with Nokia we will help more travellers connect profoundly with their world, everyday."

You can get your hands on the city guides from today. They’re £5.99 / USD 13.99 / EUR 7.99, and can be found in the Guides section in the Extras menu. For more info, head to Nokia.

Nokia’s secret plans

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008 by Jo

Remember our post about Nokia’s amazing nanotechnology phone of tomorrow? Well, our friends at Omio have been sharing some more secrets about Nokia’s plans for world domination so I thought I should let you all in on them too. They’re packed pull of swivelling, scrolling and bending excitement.

If any of you have a Nokia 7373, you’ll be quite used to the look of this first handset. It has the same swivelling action but depending on which way you swivel, different layers are revealed. On one layer, is the normal keypad with numbers a plenty but the other layer reveals a much more exciting touch pad which you can doodle on with a stylus.

Think that sounds good? Oh there’s so much more! Along the same lines as an iPod circular touch pad for scrolling, but halved, so it takes up less room, the next handset design brings back the clean simplicity of the touch pads of yesteryear but with increased functionality. This allows more room for the screen, the most important part.

Last of the secrets is all about the bending. If you’ve ever tried to watch a film on your phone without holding it, you might appreciate this next bit. This handy design allows you to rest your trusty handset on a surface so you can enjoy your films without the wrist cramp. Great stuff.Nokia_media_player

Nokia’s mobile phone of tomorrow

Nokiamorphconcept

Nokia, in collaboration with Cambridge University, has recently unveiled something not far removed from sci-fi films such as the Matrix or Ultraviolet.Known as Morph and currently only a theoretical concept, not much is known about the device’s technical capabilities but the designs do show how the handset is able to “morph” its shape and size according to function: ranging from a wrist watch, a tablet and a traditional mobile phone.

This is made possible with the use of nanotechnology, which also enables the device to be self-cleaning, transparent and even able to monitor its surrounding environment whilst retaining its flexible shape. The handset also has a detachable earpiece that can be used as a Bluetooth headset and both parts use solar
power to charge up.

Can’t get your head round it? Check out this video:

This is really exciting stuff. iPhone anyone?

Unfortunately, Nokia has stated that they won’t be releasing this any time soon as it is still in early development but the technology behind the Morph may be readily available in their high-end mobile devices in about seven years time.

Check out Wired’s “7 Jobs That Nokia’s Phone of the Future Will be Good For” for a lighthearted list of things you can do with Nokia’s Morph.
