Beat the credit crunch - Cheap kitchen appliances
Friday, November 14th, 2008

It’s not a particularly great time to be moving house at the moment so for those of you who just want to spruce things up a bit, you can do so for less than you think.
The kitchen is where all the action happens, food action, that is. It’s also one of the most expensive rooms to totally redo because of all the appliances that have to go in it. But there are some great bargains to be had in the appliances department. We’ve been through all the reviews to pick out a load of cheap appliances that have great reviews from their owners.
We’ve even managed to find a fridge-freezer, washing machine, oven, hob, dishwasher and microwave all for under £800!
We’ve also included some smaller items like kettles and toasters. Check them out:
Best cheap appliances
Washing machine - Indesit WIB111 - £175
Oven - Indesit FI21KB - £135
Hob - New World NWGHU60Ss - £78
Fridge-freezer - Hotpoint RFA52 - £209
Microwave - Russell Hobbs SMS21 - £40
Dishwasher - Beko DWD4310 - £160
All the above for under £800!
Kettle - Kenwood Mona Kettle - £15
Toaster - Kenwood TTP103 - £18
Food processor - Kenwood Delia’s Cheat Gadget - £17
Some real bargains there. I can’t believe that food processor is only £17! It’s been reviewed by 333 people and has a score of 9.1/10 so it’s definitely a little gem. It was also recommended by TV chef extraordinaire, Delia Smith, so it must be good.
There are plenty more bargains to be had too but just make sure you read the reviews first to ensure the product is actually any good.

Credit crunch - best TVs under £400
Friday, November 7th, 2008

We had credit crunch busting laptops last week and this week we bring you TVs. If you’ve needed to replace an old one or if you just want to treat the family at Christmas, we’ve checked out over 550 televisions to find you the best ones for under £400. In fact, most of them are even under £350!
Top 10 TVs under £400
1. Goodmans LD3265D - 32″ - £330
2. Goodmans LD1945WD - 19″ - £170
3. Sony Bravia KDL20S3030 - 20″ - £280
4. Samsung LE32A436T - 32″ - £358
5. Sony Bravia KDL20S3000 - 20″ - £285
6. Sony Bravia KDL26S3000 - 26″ - £375
7. Sharp Aquos LC20AD5E - 20″ - £300
8. Philips 19PFL5602D - 19″ - £279
9. Sony Bravia KDL20S3070 - 20″ - £295
10. Philips 19PFL5522D/05 - 19″ - £257
If you’re looking for a bigger TV, I think that 32″ LCD Samsung LE32A436T is great value for money. With three HDMI ports and two scart interfaces, you won’t be short of places to plug in all your home entertainment bits and pieces.
One reviewer wrote:
“Great TV for the price point. I was quite surprised at the quality of both picture and sound. Definitely worth a go if you’re watching the pennies. Terrific value for money.”
And if you’re into gaming:
“sleek design, dust magnet though! Quality of picture when playing games on my xbox 360 is fantastic.”
It’s also praised for its image and sound quality so a pretty good all-rounder.
If you really want to save money though, the £170 19″ LCD Goodmans LD1945WD is a bargain. With great scores for design and image quality, if you don’t mind buying a little smaller, you can really save the pounds here.
Whichever TV you go for, just be sure you read the reviews first. You may be able to save money on the price but if the TV isn’t right for you, it’ll be money wasted.
Now all you need is a TV stand : )

What to buy…teenage boys
Friday, October 31st, 2008
It’s time for another installment in our What to buy series. We looked at What to buy Dads last week and this week it’s the turn of another tricky customer…the teenage boy.
If you need inspiration, just take a look at these:
For the music lover - Everyone loves music. Get them an MP3 player and they can take music with them
wherever they go. The top rated MP3 player on Reevoo at the moment is the 8GB iPod Touch. It’s currently around £100. If you were looking to spend a little less than that, the second highest rated player is the £70 Sony NWZA816 4GB. And for a complete bargain buy, grab some CDs. Prices start from as little at £2.
For the gamer - Why not go for a games console like the PlayStation 3 (£289)? If they already have a
console, they might like a gaming chair (£100). It’s comfortable for extended gaming sessions and you can feel the action through it. It can also be used to listen to music and watch films. There are also lots of console accessories, like this PS3 charging station for £15. For smaller gifts, you could go for a video game (prices start at £2).
For Mr Sociable - A mobile phone so that they can keep in contact with all their mates. For a phone
packed full of features, how about the Nokia N95 or N96? Or for a more classy option, how about the Samsung Tocco or the new iPhone? (All phone prices vary according to contract)
For the sporty ones - Some tickets to a football or rugby match will make a great gift. For something
more original, why not try this Garmin Forerunner 405 (£169) GPS-enabled sport watch, which tracks your training and sends the data to your computer or for trips to the coast this fishing starter kit (£32)?
For gadgety types - A Wind-Up Torch with Mobile Phone Charger (£7) or some travel speakers for your
iPod (£9).
And for the boy that has everything? - Give them this Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock
(£24) - guaranteed to wake the laziest of teenagers.
All done. Pretty painless, just as shopping should be.
If you’re purchasing online, follow our top tips for online shopping this Christmas.

Credit crunch - best laptops under £300
Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

I know it’s all a bit doom and gloom at the moment in the money department but what happens when you actually need to buy something?
Laptops may seem like an unaffordable luxury but if you’re a student or you run your own business or you just need soemthing that you can carry around with you, laptops are your best bet and you can get one for cheaper than you think.
We’ve set the bar at £300 and found some great deals. Here are the top ten most highly rated laptops under £300, rated by people who have actually bought them:
1. Asus EEE PC 4GB INT - £170
2. Advent 4211 - £230
3. Packard Bell MX37 T003 - £300
4. Toshiba Equium L350-10L - £300
5. Compaq CQ50100EM SI40 - £300
6. Toshiba Equium L300-146 - £300
7. Asus EEE PC 701 4G - £205
8. Asus EEE PC 701 8G - £205
9. EI Systems 1201 T23701G - £250
10. Acer As5633 - £300
So there we go. With prices as low as £170, you’re sure to find something. Asus EEE PCs are great to take anywhere because they’re so tiny, and I especially like all of the new colours they come in but they may take a bit of getting used to. A couple of the reviews from guys mention that the keys are a little difficult for them to type with. If they don’t sound like they’re for you, an extra 50 or so will get you the Advent 4211. It’s got some great reviews. Nuala from County Louth says:
“It’s just fantastic. The best money I ever spent. You can use it anywhere. I would’nt be without it”
And if online gaming’s your thing, Fiona from Wales says:
“Very small and lightweight. Speedy processor means not matter how many screens you’ve got open it doesnt slow. Would higly recommend for anyone looking for an internet laptop. I find it good for online gaming as the applications do not slow the computer even if palying several sites at once.”
If you’re after something stylish, go for the Compaq CQ50100EM SI40. Everyone raves about its design. But if you ask me, the Toshiba Equium L350-10L packs a whole lot into £300 and looks to be well worth the money.
So lots of bargains there and lots of different laptops to choose from. If you’ve come across any others, let us know.

What to buy - Kitchens on a budget
Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008
We thought it was about time we carried on our rooms on a budget theme. This week, we’re looking at kitchens on a budget.
We’ve looked at everything you’d need for a kitchen – minus the cabinets themselves – and our budget kitchen comes in at £1114.
Obviously everybody’s kitchen will be different colours so we’ve gone for standard, yet sleek, black and stainless steel.
First up are the essentials, sink, oven, hob and fridge-freezer.

We’ve gone for the attractive Astracast KO10RS sink. It’s £150, 98 cm wide and has a bowl size of 43 x 50 cm.
Everyone knows that if you want the best control over your cooking, the only way to go is gas. We’ve found this great stainless steel hob and oven pack from Baumatic. It’s £200 and has been rated 9.1/10 on Reevoo.

The top rated and best value for money fridge freezer we could find was the Indesit TA5S. It’s £240, has more fridge room than the large American-style fridges and it’s got some great reviews. Lots of owners are very impressed with its capacity, quality and value for money.
Ok, so far we’ve covered the essentials and we’re up to £590. Not bad for a fridge-freezer, oven, hob and sink?
Let’s move on to appliances.

The Breville JK123 kettle is simple to use and great value for money at £16. The matching Breville TT48 toaster is only £19. It has independent controls for each slice and a digital display.

This £51 Kenwood SJSS25 microwave has been rated 8.5/10 by the people who have bought it. Its capacity is 25 litres and it also has a grill function. One review reads “Easy to use, attractive, cost effective, efficient, fast, easy to wipe clean and maintain”.

For a dishwasher, we’ve gone for the Hotpoint FDL570. It’s £215 and it’s only 49 decibels so you won’t annoy the neighbours.

And finally, the washing machine. The A-rated Hotpoint WF321 is £223 and it has a larger than average load capacity of 6kg. Pam from Salisbury says “It is easy to use, not too noisy, nice big door and nice looking”.
So there you have it, a stylish kitchen for a little over £1000. Job done.

What to buy - Home offices on a budget
Monday, June 23rd, 2008
In today’s what to buy, we’re looking at home offices. Whether you work from home or you just need an office at home, there’s no need to spend a fortune on some decent kit.
We’ve looked at laptops and desktop computers, shredders and fax machines and a lot more to help you furnish your office.
Let’s start off with computers. For those of you who prefer laptops, we’ve picked out the 15 inch Hewlett Packard 530. It’s got an 80GB hard drive, an Intel Celeron M 520 1.6 GHz processor and a DVD re-writer. You can pick one up for £267.97 with an increased 120GB hard drive. A bargain, I’m sure you’ll agree.
If you’re more of a desktop computer fan, you can try the Compaq SR5219. This has a 250GB hard drive, a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor and a DVD rewriter. It also comes with a 17inch Tft monitor and is around £360. It has some good reveiws too. Comments in the reviews include “Everything is spot on” and “very easy to set up, nice touch sensitive keyboard, looks smart”.
You’ll be needing a desk to house your bargains. Why not try the Dakota Workstation. It’s simple but stylish and most importantly, it’ll only set you back £20.
For a printer, we’ve gone for the £75 Epson Stylus DX8400. It doubles up as a scanner/copier so you can save some more money there. We’ve also gone for an Epson because you tend to get cheaper ink cartridges, so there’s the potential for long-term money saving. One shopper left this review “the product give me exactly what I was wanting at the right price”.
You can’t do much without the net these days so if you’ve been unfortunate enough to get an internet provider who doesn’t supply you with a router, you can get the 54 Mbps Belkin F5D7231UK4 for £44. It’s got a stonking 200 meter wireless range so you can work in the house or even in the garden (unless you live in a mansion/palace, in which case, I’d checkout your distances before you embark on any ’off-piste’ activities).
They’re not used much these days but if you do need a fax machine, the Brother T104 is £67.
So there we go, under £500 if you go with a laptop and just over £500 if you chose a desktop computer, although there may be other elements there that you don’t need.
Reviews for all of the items can be found on Reevoo, along with lots of other reviews from shoppers.

What to buy - Living rooms on a budget
Thursday, June 12th, 2008
Are you in the process of re-doing your lounge? Have you just moved into your first place? For whatever reason, if you’re looking to kit out your living room but you’re a bit short of cash, you’ve come to the right place. This is the first in a series of posts about kitting out your rooms on a budget. As you might have guessed, we’re starting off with the lounge.
Everyone says the centre of a home is the kitchen but quite frankly we all spend far more time in front of the TV than the oven – unless you are a) a chef, b) a mum or c) you’ve just stepped out of the 19th century and you don’t have a TV.
So first up is the television - probably one of the most important items in your house. We’ve gone for a 32 incher as that’s the nation’s most popular size and fits in to most living rooms.
The Hitachi L32H01 is HD ready, has an LCD screen and comes in at £395. Quite reasonable and equipped with two scart sockets and two HDMI connections so you won’t be short of places to plug your consoles, DVD players and digital set top boxes into. This TV gets 9.2/10 on Reevoo. Janet, a reviewer from Derby says “It is good looking, easy to set up and use. The sound quality is excellent and it’s an expensive product at a very good price”.
Now you’ve got a TV, you’ll be needing a DVD player. We’ve gone for the Samsung DVD-R155 which is a very reasonable £104, especially as it’s a DVD recorder as well. You can also play all of your own-burned DVDs so those holiday videos can be ‘enjoyed’ over and over and over… The most popular comment left about this machine was that it was easy to use.
If you’re worried about where to put your TV and DVD recorder, we’ve taken care of that as well. This classy looking Alphason AP2-3/80 is £90 and scores 8.8/10. Reviewers loved the design and the fact that it was easy to build. It’s also black so it’ll match the TV and DVD player we picked out earlier.
Every lounge needs a HiFi system. The Philips MCB204 is very reasonable at £47. It has a DAB digital radio, MP3 playback and USB ports so that you can play all of your downloaded music too. Pretty good for under £50! And if you’re worried that the cheap stuff is never the best, this little machine has some cracking reviews. Check them out for yourself.

You may already have one but if not, we’ve also picked out a cordless phone set. The Philips SE2453S/05 is £59. Included in that price are three handsets. You can store up to 100 phone numbers and you can wonder 300m from the base unit.
So there you have it. A lounge kitted out for under £700 (695 to be exact). If you already had a phone, you’re looking at £636 for some pretty decent kit.
We were thinking about adding a Nintendo Wii in there but you’d be adding £200 to your credit card and you are supposed to be on a budget after all…If you’d prefer to spend the money on a Wii and forego food for a month, you can check out Wii reviews here.
