Firefox mobile and Blu-ray MacBooks

Monday, October 13th, 2008 by Alan Friggieri

Rumors, rumours. They’ve been flying around the last few days. Here are two that should interest you:

Last week, at the Future of Web Apps expo in London, Kevin Rose, Digg founder extraordinaire, predicted that Apple will unveil their MacBooks packing Blu-ray drives tomorrow at their special event which focuses on notebooks. Exciting stuff? So could this be the beginning of a beautiful relationship that will see all MacBooks with Blu-ray as standard? If you have any thoughts, let us know. In the meantime, if you’re still trying to decide on a MacBook, check out the MacBook reviews.

The other juicy rumor that seems to have come around faster that we’d thought is the release of the Firefox mobile. Firefox’s first mobile outing will be on the Linux-running Nokia N810.

It will be a little like the iPhone, with the N810’s touchscreen but we’re promised that the software will be pretty nifty with tabs, smart URLs and browser extensions. As it’s still early days, this release is intended for testing but check out the video below for a sneak peak.

Mobile Phone Kills Two Birds with One Stone by letting The Devil Wear Prada while Making Work for Idle Hands

Friday, May 23rd, 2008 by Alan Friggieri

What do you
do to make your handset stand out in the crowd when cameras are old-hat, 3G is
expected and touch-screens are no-longer exciting? A number of brands now think
think they have the answer. LG is now securing itself as a premier brand-name
with its high-end Black Label series. These include the vastly popular LG Prada, which so far has sold
nearly 800,000 worldwide, and the Chocolate
and Shine selling a combined 25m so
far. Given the numbers, let’s just say it’s not a bad idea getting a fancy
designer or two onboard. Samsung, for instance, has recently launched the
Samsung Giorgio Armini and
it’s no surprise that LG is in talks with Prada again and are also preparing to
launch the carbon fibre and tempered glass Secret LG

So who’s
next on the designer phone market? According to Reuters, none other than
Christian Dior have teamed up with Modelabs to launch their own luxury handset (pictured above).
Not to appear elitist, the mobile has been priced at a cool $5,000. Not much
else is known about it other than the standard touch-screen, perfect for
manicured fingers and camera, ideal for taking photos of your miniature dog-in-a-bag.

But woah
there, all this talk of flashy designer handsets and style over substance isn’t
very Reevoo is it? Because we pride ourselves in cutting away from the
marketing spin we’re going to tell you what actually happens when you own a
designer phone.

Virtually the only positive comments we’ve received about designer phones are
about how stylish they look and nothing about functionality or ease of use. I
fact, everything else seems to be about how short-lived the battery is and how
overly sensitive and complicated the touch-screens can be.

Nick from Coventry says of the LG Prada:

“If you someone sends you a message
while you are replying to another, it changes the reply number to who just sent
you the new message. Can be quite embarrassing!!!!”

Of the Samsung Armani, one reviewer comments:

“Guide book is terrible. The
screen is very difficult to get used to and i have had two touch screen
phones.”

In summary, if you’re looking for a new fashion accessory, try a handbag,
of which you can find Gucci, Prada and D&G customer reviews. If you’re
looking for a new phone, you’re probably better off going for something that
suits that need! Manufacturers may be trying to win you over with smooth
corners and designer labels but they don’t seem to have realized that you want to
be able to use the things!

Top 5 Designer Phones:

Samsung Ted Baker Button – 7.9 out of 10

LG Chocolate – 7.5 out of 10

Samsung Armani – 7.5 out of 10

Levis – 7.2 out of 10

Wife racks up £11,000 download fees for husband!

Monday, March 3rd, 2008 by Alan Friggieri

£2,750 an episode sounds pretty steep for a screen actor’s fees, let alone a download charge! It’s been announced that the unfortunate wife of a city executive cost the poor fellow over £11k by queueing up four Friends episodes for download.  Talk about being in the doghouse!

Little did the businessman know when he happened to leave the UK, where the downloads are free, on a flight to Germany, where roaming fees kicked in. Now we all know the real reason they tell you to turn off your mobiles during flights! More money flew straight out the plane window than his air-miles are likely to ever cover.

Sonyt650iI guess you’re probably asking two questions right now…

1. So who’s to blame?
a. Phone operators for charging astronomical roaming fees even after the September 2007 EuroTariffs
b. The wife for downloading a programme that’s been on 24-hour loop on various channels for the last 10 years
c. The husband for letting her use his business phone for TV shows

2. How can I stop this happening to me?
Well it all depends on your stance on the first question…
If a. You want to get savvy on the right mobile phone tariff for you so it’s probably best you check out our Mobile Phone Buyer’s Guide
If b. Have you thought about DVDs? They’re very handy because you can watch them on big screens meant for films and they don’t have to be downloaded
If c. It might be time to fork out for a second handset. Customers have recently voted the Sony Ericsson T650I the best web-browsing phone (that’s right, above the iPhone!).

Sony Ericsson W910 Wins Best Mobile Handset at MWC

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008 by Alan Friggieri

GSMA has announced the Sony Ericsson W910 as the Best Mobile Handset or Device at the Mobile World Congress 2008. The phone has been remarkably well received considering the first batch was recalled but reading real customer reviews on Reevoo reveals just some of the reasons people love it.

Of the Havana Gold version, Vc from London says:

“If you want bling this phone will turn heads and catch attention from others,”

Customers also love the Shake Control feature, which allows you to move to the next music track without fiddling for buttons.

Fiona from Harrogate loves her W910 and recommends using it with a Bluetooth headset for the best music experience:

“I have always been a Nokia fan but not any more. I’m now a true convert to Sony. This phone has such a lovely and very instinctive feel to it. I would recommend it to any one. I bought this phone for the walkman features and although the sound quality isn’t the best when played through the speakers, the quality through my blue tooth headphones is amazing.”

Another of this year’s winners is Windows Mobile 6.0 for Best Mobile Enterprise Product or Service but be warned that it takes some learning.
