Best iPod Docks

Friday, October 30th, 2009 by Kat

CD collectionWith more and more people ditching bulky CD collections in favour of the music on their computers or MP3 players, the popularity of the traditional Hi Fi is being overtaken by new music gadgets.

If you’ve got money to spare, a killer multi-room music system can be acheived with media streamers by the likes of Sonos and Philips.  A more practical solution (and simpler to set up) solution is iPod speakers: just plug your MP3 player in or slot it in the dock, and press play.  Another advantage of these devices is their flexibility: friends or family just need to plug in their MP3 players and suddenly you can listen to a whole new range of music.

Everyone’s heard of Bose’s SoundDock and, with regular updates, there’s a lot to like in their range (the Portable, starting at £322, the Original now down to £128, the Mark II from £219 and the top of the line SoundDock 10, at a hefty £699).  Here are a range of other MP3 speakers from lesser-known companies that are worth considering.

Student Sound System

If you just want something small enough to fit in a student room and cheaper than a round of drinks, take a look at the Logic 3 iStation Traveller, from £10.  This battery powered speaker is light on features, but has surprisingly good sound quality for its size, according to reviews.  An average rating of 8.6/10 indicates owners were pretty happy with this pocket-szied device.

If your loan can stretch a little further, consider the Gear4 HouseParty, with nearly 4 times the wattage and a rating of 8.9/10 overall, which costs from £50 upwards.

Style-conscious

Most ipod docks follow a well-worn design track, mainly variations on a theme set by Bose’s classic devices.  Of the few to diverge from this pattern, the Gear4 Blackbox does so with most aplomb.

The Blackbox is a sleek, piano-black cube, with a red LED clock face showing through the surface and a dock on the top.  Very well-rated for design, it falls down a little on sound quality and ease of use, but still makes a drop dead gorgeous kitchen or bedroom clock/dock.

Audiophile

There’s a bit of a caveat with this category, as any audiophile worth his/her salt will tell you that trying to get great quality music from compressed audio files (like MP3s) is about as likely as.

Having said this, if you just want to get the best sound you can from your MP3 Player, you should look at the Logic 3 Valve80.  This classy-looking amplifier/speaker set recharges you iPod while it plays, and comes with a remote that allows you to navigate through your iPod music library.  The sound quality garners high praise from owners, scoring 9.0/10.  Drawbacks include being on the large size and quite pricey, starting from £277.

If you’re serious about sound quality and happy spending a little more in pursuit of it, you could do little better than combining a Fatman iTube with a pair of high quality Hi Fi speakers.

Top five coffee machines

Friday, October 30th, 2009 by Jo

The mornings are getting darker, colder and harder to wake up to so we think it’s time to bring in the cavalry – coffee. If you normally grab a cuppa on your way into work every morning, think how much money you could save by making your own tasty brew at home and investing in a good flask. Plus you get to keep warm as soon as you’ve left the house.

If we’ve convinced you, read on to see our top five coffee machine picks.

We’ve gone for a mixture of filter coffee machines, cafetières and fancy espresso makers that will make all the coffees and hot drinks you’d find in a coffee shop. If you like a wide choice of drinks and you’re too busy to worry about filter paper and plungers in the morning, you might prefer the latter.

cuisinart-dgb900bcu-grind-and-brewIf you’re serious about coffee, you’ll know that the best taste comes from grinding your own coffee. The Cuisinart DGB900BCU Grind and Brew machine (2-12 cups) will grind and brew your coffee but not only that, it does both on a timer! Wake up in the morning to the sound of grinding coffee beans and a few minutes later, you’ll have cuppa that you don’t have to put any effort into.

bosch-tas4011gbThe Bosch TAS4011GB takes “pods” - capsules of different flavoured and styles of coffee - so you can have a different drink for every day of the week. It scores 9.1/10 and is very highly rated for ease of use.

bodum-french-press-coffee-makerThe cafetière of the bunch is this Bodum French Press coffee maker (up to 8 cups). A machine for the style conscious, this is also dishwasher proof so you needn’t worry about mess and cleaning.  It’s also only £15 so you can save even more money on your morning fix.

francis-francis-x1Simple but oh so stylish, my personal favourite, the Francis Francis X1. It makes espressos, and cappuccinos plus you can either use ground coffee or the E.S.E pods for extra speed in the mornings.

delonghi-combi-espresso-coffee-makerAnd for those of you who like a bit of variety, the DeLonghi Combi BC0261 Combi Espresso and Filter Coffee Maker (up to 10 cups) does just that – espresso and filter coffee so you can have a  coffee shop selection in your kitchen. It’s £70 and has a milk frother for cappuccinos.

YES, WE’VE GOT A VIDEO!: Our handheld camcorder round-up

Friday, October 30th, 2009 by Ed

With Halloween and Guy Fawkes upon us, and Christmas creeping around the corner, there are sure to be lots of memorable party moments or firework displays worth capturing; if you want something a little more specialised than a camera-phone but aren’t ready to spend hundreds of pounds on a camcorder, there are quite a few options these days.

Flip Mino HDFlip’s range of handheld camcorders gave this area a kick-start a couple of years ago; their current offerings are the Ultra and the Mino, both available in Standard and High Definition versions. Simplicity is everything here: recording is a matter of hitting the big red button, then you can plug it straight into your computer and upload it to YouTube, all without having to install any special drivers or software. “So easy to use,” says Reevoo reviewer Steve from Caerphilly, a comment echoed by many other reviewers. In this price range there are going to be certain limitations, and other reviewers felt that the audio quality was “not fantastic” and that zoom range was “not enough”. Prices for the Flip start at £69 for the standard definition Ultra model (rated 8.8 out of 10 by Reevoo reviewers); if even that’s too bulky for you there are also the slimmer Mino versions, starting at £113 (rated 8.9 out of 10).

Creative VadoFlip are far from the only game in town however: Creative have a similar offering called the Vado, also with Standard and High Definition variations. Again, ease of use is widely praised by reviewers, although an anonymous purchaser points out that it’s “unable to take single pictures”, a feature absent from most of the pocket camcorders available: these are all about the video. Prices start at just £41 for the basic model, rated 8.8 out of 10 on reevoo.com.

Samsung HMX-U10Samsung’s entrant into the arena, the HMX-U10, has pushed the boat out a bit in terms of features, offering full 1080p HD video recording as well as being able to take stills. Unlike the other pocket camcorders that have neat USB connectors built-in (there’s endless fun to be had playing with the one in the Flip whilst procrastinating), this needs a cable, which is comparatively cumbersome. Another benefit is that unlike the Flip & the Vado, which have internal memory, video is stored on a removable SD card. Prices start at £111.

Another camera worth a look is the Kodak Zi6HD, rated 8.5 out of 10 by Reevoo reviewers. Kodak Zi6HDThis shoots high definition video onto removable SD cards; prices start at £102.

General limitations to be wary of are a lack of image stabilisation, which can make videos a little shaky & a digital only zoom, meaning a loss of quality on zoomed in images. But these cameras aren’t designed for shooting your cinematic epic, they’re something to grab out of your bag and capture your friends making fools of themselves or getting engaged. And if You’ve Been Framed accept YouTube videos now, it’ll pay for itself.
